Not bands, but individual players.

The old: John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis.

The new: Kamasi Washington.  Incredible.  He released an album in 2015 called The Epic and it is a good title.  3 discs, over 3 hours of music.

Well, one band.  Snarky Puppy.  More fusion than jazz proper, but they are still incredible.  Check them out on youtube, lots of videos.

I have liked jazz fusion (Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc) for a long time, but I've only been dipping my toe into jazz proper (bebop, avant-garde, free jazz, etc) over the last year or two.  I still can't follow all of it, but it is incredible.

I just recently saw them on youtube.  They are very cool.  In my late 20's and 30's I got to see the Chicken Corea Electric band, Billy Cobham,  The Yellow Jackets, ect. I loved the bar we got to see them in.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I've seen IM three times. The best by far was at MSG with Ronnie James Dio and Motorhead. We were in the second row with the monitors right in front of us. I remember feeling heat coming off those things, and the sound was intense. Cute waitresses serving champagne. My ears were ringing for two days after that. The only louder show I've been to is Manowar.
