And the song is still one of the band's best lyrical moments.

Afternoon, Onno. :D

I'm excited because I'll be watching the Royal Rumble live tomorrow (haven't seen any PPV live since the early 2000s), even though it's going to be a disappointment like the last two years.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Sounds good. Not really into wrestling myself though. I'm spending the day preparing for my Experimental Physics exam which will be in 3 weeks, playing Borderlands 2 with a few friends and my choir is giving a concert this evening, after which there will be a bit of a party.

Experimental Physics sounds fun. What kind of stuff will that exam cover?

Well, to be honest it's not really my cup of tea, and it sounds more fun than it is. It's basically classical mechanics and a tiny bit of thermodynamics without most of the theoretical explanations or proofs and with more experiments which are used as examples. The physics bachelor degree here in Göttingen is sort of split up into the experimental and theoretical physics which are each taught in seperated subjects.

I'm actually doing a bachelor degree in Mathematics, so the experimental part of it is pretty boring to me. But I'm just doing this stuff for my minor. Moreover, next semester there will be a theoretical course in mechanics as well, but I'm not sure if I want to do that since I find mechanics pretty boring in general  :lol It might be useful, however, so I'll just enroll for a few possible courses next semester and see which one I like best.

Aw. I always found physics interesting and useful, although I never did well at it because I was lazy at in high school (shocker). Maths is even more useful though, depending on what area. I just enjoy anything that applies to the real world in a practical way.
What do you plan to do afterwards with that stuff?

To be honest, I don't really know for sure yet. I already have a bachelor degree in Earth Science (geology and geophysics) but found out while writing my bachelor thesis that I liked physics and maths way more. Since a second bachelor degree in Holland is very expensive, I decided I'd move to Germany since it's pretty cheap there, I like the country and I already spoke a bit of German. Most of the stuff I did in my previous bachelor degree is not really useful for the stuff I do now, but I've learned a lot about what I want to do, about social stuff and studying in general.

So the only thing I know right know is that I'd like to work at a university. I love the combination of research and teaching. Therefore, I at least want to do a PhD in something maths/physics related after I finish my masters... but that's still a long way away, since I started my bachelor in maths last October.

Maths is even more useful though, depending on what area. I just enjoy anything that applies to the real world in a practical way.

For me, it's almost the exact opposite  :lol I don't really care if the stuff I do is or will be applied in some way or not. I just enjoy doing all of the maths stuff, it makes me happy (and of course frustated at times when I don't get it). It's almost like puzzles for me.

Of course, most of the maths, even the most abstract stuff, is useful because it may be applied sometime in the future even though we don't have a use for it yet. I once read a quote, I don't know by whom, from a mathematician who was asked by a politican about why he thought his research should be funded. His answer: 'Someday in the future, the stuff I do now will be applied to something for which you can make the people pay taxes'.  :lol

I like practical maths because I use it a lot in 3D/programming for calculating coordinates and forces / vectors etc, or just for writing code in general. I use trig so often. Obviously that's baby shit compared to what you're doing. :lol
I still find all maths interesting though. Numberphile is one of my favourite channels on Youtube. Again, easy as shit stuff compared to what you're doing, but they show a lot of maths that exists just for the curiosity and pattern of it, some of which does end up having practical applications in strange ways.

Morning.

Onno, you sound exactly like my son, but opposite in one way. He's getting his bachelors in physics, and as a result has to take advanced maths.

Now I'm a thin and crispy boy.

And I also like pizzas that way too.

Having the football blues after that game yesterday.  Lots of what ifs.  Hey, can't complain though.  We've had a hell of a 15 year run so far.  I just wanted to shove it up Goodell's ass.

I didn't even pay attention to the games yesterday but I checked the scores this morning. I think Denver is going to be embarrassed in the Super Bowl.

I'm not even interested in the game but my father always goes to a get together that his friend has who is a Knight of Columbus, and I usually go just to have quality father/son time. We both like drinking lots of beer, so it's a good time. They always have lots of food, so I gorge myself on wings.

I'm not a big football fan but my girlfriend is a huge Carolina Panthers fan so it's a lot more watching the game with someone who really enjoys it.

Morning, all

King, I've been doing a bunch of what if-ing myself...yesterday, I was screaming at the television (on two fourth quarter possessions) "Kick the fucking ball you dipshits. You never take points off the board with that much time in the game. Fuck."  :lol

After the late game. Mrs. P said, talking about Cam Newton, "He'd be easy to root for if he wasn't such a dick-trickle." Gotta love those PhD students, the have all the best words.

Hey guys. Working on university stuff again today. Had a great after-concert party yesterday with my choir so I got up late today and it was hard getting concentrated enough. But now that I've made myself a cup of tea and put on Rachmaninov I'm finally concentrated enough.

So I should probably close my DTF browser window now  :lol
