I use the standard light SMF theme. Dark background websites make my eyes bleed. Or at least hurt like a SOB and water within 2 minutes. It's not 1997 any more, dark backgrounds should be banned.

You must have your monitor set WRONG then (uh oh, choassystem must be rubbing off on me). The defaults on most LCD monitors are complete garbage. They have a maximum brightness of 250-300cd, when you should only run them at half of that brightness at most. On a properly calibrated monitor, a white background should be perfectly comfortable to read, like paper.

I can't judge it based on a photo, especially compared to a dark room. The exposure of a screen vs ambient light always looks washed.

I approve of the Mythbusters though! I have every season on DVD.

Oh I know that, and I don't expect everyone to have their monitors set up to exact specs, it's just one of those things that bugs me that monitor defaults are so wonked that people complain about white backgrounds when the problem is them, without even realizing it.

My graphics monitor came out of the box set to 29% brightness, which corresponds to a brightness of 120cd, which is perfect. The calibration software doesn't even allow brighter than that unless you check a specific option, and I think my warranty only covers you if you don't run it too far beyond that. And that's at 29% brightness. I don't think I've seen anyone else running them at an equivalent brightness, because they're always set to look bright and saturated to impress the eye.

Indeed.... it was freakin cold as a witches cunt last winter. I think it was something like 43 days straight below freezing - the entire month of February - it was the coldest February ever on record.

I know your brother has a decent monitor. Does he have it hardware calibrated to a particular brightness? I'd be interested to know what he has it set to for reference. Otherwise, you might be surprised by how dim the recommended setting is.

My mac monitor on full brightness isn't even that bright. It's not like having my iPhone on full brightness - which is like shining a torch in your eyes. I NEVER have it on full.

Yeah, I never have mine set past half unless I am literally using it as a torch.

I'm not on my computer, otherwise I'd do a rough comparison of what brightness on the iThing screen is equivalent to my screen.

I try to be cognisant of how long I spend staring at the screen and try to look away all the time and not sit too close etc.

Same with mixing with headphones. Not too loud and not for too long a period at a time.

Apart from ear damage - it's good to get a rest when mixing to get a fresh perspective at a later date.

I've done mixes I've thought sounded horrible - come back after a week and thought they actually sounded perfectly fine.

My monitor has a "reader's mode" that is really warm and mid brightness. Very easy on the eyes and quick to get to through the control panel.

My monitor has a "paper" preset that is also very warm and much lower brightness. I don't like the look of it, and my monitor is already comfortable for reading.

I don't think there's any risk of ear damage if you're at a decent volume, especially in a quiet environment. It's the people cranking their earbuds to compete with a noisy train/bus that have to worry.
It's always good to take a rest just to come back with a fresh perspective though. It's too easy to get adjusted to a mix and not notice problems until you hear it later.

So I missed a call this morning (today and THurs are my days off), asking if Id work an easy shift from 6p-12a. The call came in at 730a. I went to bed at 530a and was up at noon. By that time I saw it, he had given it to someone else. I made a comment via text on how I would have loved to do it. Next thing you know, he has asking me left and right to fill in shit.

One of them being his shift tomorrow.

I dont wanna get up early...

nor do I wanna be there a full shift.

So instead of working 7a - 3p, I'm going to be there from 8a-1p. Because fuck the system. Plus I have a 12 hour shift I got bambuzzled into for Saturday. I cannot WAIT till I know whether or not I got this new job...

I haven't even gotten to the interview yet. They apparently they liked my resume enough to select me for testing... I'm assuming that narrows it down to 300 or so. And then they'll throw out the people who don't pass the test and select from there. I'm not sure how many openings there are. I'm assuming a few dozen (based off of their hiring practices in the past according to a friend who works there albeit in a different department.) also... That friend knows one of the girls who conducts the interviews (the interviews consists of a panel of 4 or so people grilling you) and is putting a good word in for me.
