I don't know. While driving from home to the office I thought of some stupid, smart-assed response to your dilemma (that probably would only be funny to me) but, now I sense that you're truly struggling with it.

The best I can think of is to be honest and say something like.

I really thought this project would be a good fit and I took it on in good faith and with the best of intentions. It turns out that you'd be better off with a different artist so I'm withdrawing my services. I realize that this will put you in a bad situation at this late hour and I apologize for that.

Sorry, Blob, I wish I had something better but this is probably the way I'd do it.

The worst part is that it will probably come out of nowhere for him, because they said they liked what they saw and gave some changes, but the changed needed amount to redoing the entire thing from scratch, and the thing is, I struggled because I was trying to stick exactly to what they wanted and still got it that wrong.
From their perspective it's going to look like-
"That's good, but fix these few things"
*waits until deadline to reply*
"I quit"

Which will probably look like an overreaction to minor criticism, but it was a matter of at that point realizing that the way I think and work isn't going to work with what they need.

Yes it was a couple of days ago, which was only a couple of days before the deadline, which is now. If I'd done the work correctly and in a timely fashion the first time, it wouldn't have been an issue, and the changes may not have been an issue either if I was someone more suitable for the work.

The more I think about it, the worse I feel for wanting to quit now, but the more I feel it's what I have to do.

Things I think you should stress.

1) This is art.
2) Not every artist is suitable to the needs of their customer.
3) You've given it your best effort and after reviewing the necessary changes over the past few days you've determined it's not a good fit for both parties.
4) You feel bad that this is the case.

If you know another artist who would be suitable, offer to get in touch with them to see if they'd be willing to do the deed quickly. If not, their lack of planning isn't your crisis...or so it seems to me.

It's not really their fault. They can do this entirely on their own, and I think giving me a small part to do was a token gesture, and I've not only failed at it, but left it until their deadline to tell them I'm out. I feel I've handled this unprofessionally all around, mostly due to sucking hugely at dealing with people, and not wanting to admit yet again that I can't do something and letting people down constantly.

I don't know what to say other than, I'm sorry that you're struggling. I think you're being unduly harsh on yourself but then I'm not there and don't know all the nuances.

It's weird, but the fixer in me wants to rescue you and we've never even met.

It's just a shitty situation. I don't want to blame anyone else for my problems. I just sent the email. I'm honestly terrified to read the eventual response, but it had to be done. 2016 is off to an amazing start. Already failed 1/2 projects.

I feel that - even if the reply is really angry - at least they're not standing there screaming in your face. They're miles away and you're just reading it.

If you are really apologetic and take all the blame etc . . . I don't think they can be THAT angry. You might be surprised.


Besides - by the way you described it - there may have been a crossed wire or mis-communication when they were explaining what they wanted hence why they were unsatisfied.

If you were only doing your best based on what you thought they wanted...it's not that huge of a problem.

I have 9 new emails. I'm too scared to even check them, because that's too many emails. That's potentially from 9 different people all unhappy with me.

Or there's one email from the guy, and 8 emails offering me deals on cheap video games.
