I can't wait for Playstation VR to finally drop. I have a Google Cardboard headset that's really fun to mess around with (I started a thread not too long ago).

Google Cardboard is nice as a cheap starting point for VR, although the optics are no doubt nothing close to accurate in terms of perspective, not to mention that smartphones are somewhat underpowered and don't have great screens for something as demanding as VR. I expect the step up from that to the Rift or the Valve HTC will be no less mind blowing.

They'll probably have to scale back graphics a bit for the PS4 too, although that should still manage some good stuff. Having fixed hardware helps in terms of optimization.
My interest fully lies in the PC side, but not for gaming. I'd love to make some VR environments, and be able to really experience them, instead of just seeing it on a screen. The thought of seeing the TARDIS at full scale, or walking around Hill Valley 2015 are the kinds of things I'm itching to make. :blob:

Yeah. That's going to be great. I think the VR is really going to shine in the homebrewing community. The playstation VR will be able to display at 60hz, 90hz, and 120hz. Should give developers some nice options in regards to the scale of their environments. Developers don't seem to have many problems getting 60fps (though I'm not sure if that means 30fps in each eye), but I know Sony has been working with them to try and get 90fps.

60fps means 60fps, it's not like 3D with glasses on a home theater that alternates frames for each eye. It's good that the Playstation VR screen supports those higher framerates, although driving it is another. Much like a lot of console games have had to run at 30fps or only render at 720p and upscale, I expect we'll see the same deal with Playstation VR. There are also some optimizations they can do to run the game at a lower framerate, but still maintain the higher framerate sense of presence by applying some camera transforms without updating. I don't know how much that will help though.

Since the Oculus has already been available for a couple of years to developers, it's already incorporated quite well into all of the major game engines that indie developers use, such as the Unreal Engine, and Unity which is what I use, and it's almost trivial to get it up and running. Adapting a game or creating one from scratch to work within the parameters of a whole new way of playing is of course another matter altogether.

2016 is going to be an important year for VR.

I'm really looking forward to it. I've been waiting for this since trying a Virtual Boy in Toys R Us when I was about five. I think it has the potential to completely revolutionize how we watch video content. The thought of being able to look around a movie and seeing it from different angles is awesome.

Just out of curiosity, have you heard of or read the book "Ready Player One"?

I would like to.

I know it, but I'm not much of a sit down and read kind of guy. If I was a reader though, it would be on my list.

The reason I've always hated 3D movies is because the 3D implementation is not truly how our eyes work. VR is how it should be done, although I'm not sure it will be practical any time soon to make movies that way. But looking around is out of the question for now unless it's rendered on the fly, because obviously stereoscopic video doesn't support left/right panning. Up/down should be fine in theory. Maybe they'll find a better way to fudge it in future, but the storage and editing requirements would be ridiculous.

No doubt. I didn't mean that that'll be the first thing we see out of VR. But in 20-30 years time, I think the technology and processing power will be able to make that available to the masses.

I know, and I agree, although I think it could be sooner. Until that point, I have zero interest in current 3D movies.

There are no cures or remedies for stupidity, only band-aids.

But there is correction by someone else.  That's still a feather in John's cap.

He'll fix the problem, and make his money, and move along, but I'm sure the other idiot will fudge it back up soon enough.

Very true but as a manger myself, I take notes to someone that is willing to fix someone problem for the better good.  Those are the ones you take care of.

So I go allll the way up to 238th St. in the Bronx (I work out of downtown Brooklyn) which is about an hour and a half on the subway and Verizon STILL didn't fix their end of it. Instead of just saying that they're still working on it, they said it's something on the transit side of things. BULLSHIT.  Three hours of traveling to do two minutes of testing to realize Verizon still doesn't have a clue.

On a side note, thank you New York City tax payers for paying for rest of the 7 hours and 58 minutes that I was doing nothing.   ;D

Across the hall from my home office, my dog is dead asleep on the bed. He's quietly yipping, and barking while his legs are jerking around. I don't know if I should go wake him. He may be having a nightmare...or more likely, he's having a fun dream. I wouldn't want to spoil a good one.

Thoughts?

Yeah, in retrospect I should have typed "dead-asleep". The hyphen could have changed the whole sentence.
