Shadow Ninja 2.0 The Tallest Man On Earth – The Blizzard’s Never Seen The Desert Sands:
Tallest Man on Earth? Judging from Parama’s tastes (which honestly don’t say that much) this is quite the risk. Well, I don’t necessarily dislike this song, but it’s doing little to nothing special for me, in the sense that I would never relisten this type of stuff. It’s a very short song with very few aspects to it, I kinda like his voice though, he goes a lot of places in two minutes, and while this guy isn’t aiming for any crazy stuff in his songwriting, that’s the main problem I’m having, because one standard song of a genre I have never really listened to is just not going to convince me, unless it has something or someone really special that improves the whole song. Take this as a compliment as you probably couldn’t have scored higher than a 6,5 with this, sure, I do like me some acoustic music at times, but these songs usually have some more rock-oriented vocals, here I go again with the Brent Smith references, but that’s the perfect example of an amazing acoustic rock singer in my eyes.
6,5/10425 Nightwish – I Want My Tears Back:
Sure enough, I got my Nightwish submission, hearing this song I desperately wanted to find that one Nightwish song I knew like 8 years ago that was goddamn catchy and my dad used to spin 24/7. I found it, it was Amaranth, and I still love that song, curious whether it’s acclaimed among NW fans aswell. I see where you’re coming from here, it’s actually pretty heavy compared to what I’ve heard from these guys before, pleasantly surprised, but it’s still a bit too straightforward for me to say much. Are those bagpipes near the end? Gotta admit that’s sweet

. I wish the “I want my tears back” chant wasn’t so cheesy, cause that does kinda wear on me. It’s not a bad song, but I definitely preferred the Tuomas song you sent me. Still, fine song overall, however I feel this band has more potential from what I’ve heard than this song.
7/10
Elite Agent Fresco – See Hell:
I like how it starts off very fresh, it’s got the upbeat rhythm, cool stuff. First off, there’s something about those Nordic accents when they sing in English that hooks me so often, this guy is no exception. This has original written all over it, even though it may sound a bit generic at first, that changes quickly as this Arnór guy comes in strong. I usually don’t really talk about lyrics too much, but “I know my hands still reach for hell, should I feed them the fire?” is top notch. I guess I’m still missing that spark though, I’m definitely not taking in this song as well as your previous ones, nonetheless it’s a good song and I hope you enjoyed your concert (and Agent Fresco’s, for that matter).
7,5/10Tyrias Susanne Sundfør - The Brothel:
Getting a very eerie vibe from that beginning, but dang, this woman has a great voice! What I love about these open rounds is that I really get great work from all kinds of music, you got the heavy balls to the wall songs, and then you have a beautiful, peaceful balad. It’s hard to say a lot about this because it doesn’t have much material to talk about, it’s the kind of song I appreciate to death but wouldn’t feel comfortable listening to myself. I guess I want more than just a great singer in my music, but you could barely have scored better on that level, I rarely find myself going back to a song that’s pretty much just singing, and while I think the main purpose of these instruments are to create an atmosphere of some sort, that’s where they lose me, definitely one of the most talented singer I’ve heard in quite a while though.
8/10splent Genesis – Firth Of Fifth:
As a former Disturbed fan my very first taste of Genesis was Land of Confusion, great tune, but never checked out other songs by them, because it was never really my kind of music back then, but I’m pretty open to new stuff recently, and this is one of those bands I wouldn’t regret delving deeper into. From the impressions I get from this song I feel like it’s an excellent classic “epic”-ish song, I love how the piano melody in the beginning returns later on in a spectacular fashion, followed by a nice guitar solo. I’m impressed by this band, but I guess it was to be expected because they’re not exactly obscure.
8/10mikemangioy Animals As Leaders – Mind-Spun:
The first person to use an artist from the green list! Great, because I’ve been meaning to check out Animals As Leaders, I know about 4 songs and they haven’t really disappointed, aside from just being too much at times. The only song I know from this album is PE, and that’s a pretty tough song to beat, but this is actually not bad, it’s the kind of instrumental I enjoy listening to, it’s like a systematic chaos. I’ve always said this about the few AAL songs I heard, but Tosin stands out the most every single time, he’s really talented. I just think it’s a shame they fade out to end the song, I’ve never liked that, apart from a few exceptions (Fade to Black for instance), I just think it’s wasted potential of a song. Nevertheless, you really impressed me with this, I didn’t expect to enjoy an AAL submission as much as I did with this.
8/10Sacul Porcupine Tree – Blackest Eyes:
Cool, the first song to arrive from an artist I have only heard one album from. Of course these guys aren’t complete strangers to me, I happen to know that they have a very diverse discography, so you might have had a lot to choose from. This song is definitely leaning more towards their heavier side, well, the beginning is pretty heavy, and not in a boring one sided way, so that’s good. As a matter of fact, it’s energetic as hell throughout the whole song, the chorus being energetic in a fun kind of way, and the rest of the song is just kicking ass. Nothing to really complain about, but I simply like the upcoming songs better.

LordCost Caligula’s Horse - Marigold:
I think I’ve heard of this band before, or maybe I just remembered the story of Caligula from my Latin classes

. Anyway, I’m pretty sure this is one of the bands a guy over at /r/progmetal recommended me but never bothered to check it out. I know this is a pretty new band, and that modern sound is really intriguing, they kick it off with a badass riff that has been stuck in my head for atleast 2 days now, but let’s face it, the reason I like it so much is the way that singer takes this harmonic/peaceful style and turns really angry just when the chorus is about to start, it’s so powerful! Still not as good as the Jolly one, but that’s going to take a lot to beat.
8,5/10Evermind Beyond the Bridge – Doorway To Salvation:
Prepared for heaviness I shall be. Gawddayumn that starting riff though, that’s the stuff. Wasn’t sure what kind of song to expect after hearing that, sure enough, the least expected thing ever happens as they go full out acapella style. As soon as that male vocalist comes in I get that rock-opera feel, and it’s amazing like you mentioned, however, I think it takes away from the chorus a bit, because the pre-chorus is way more memorable than the chorus itself. That said, it is probably a bit longer than an average length prog metal tune, and that gives them the space to go so many places with the song, and that’s exactly what they did, definitely not your standard song structure with an extended instrumental section, just 8 minutes of fun, well structured songwriting. Speaking of instrumental sections, that keyboard solo is so damn groovy, I wish more prog keyboard players would adapt to this style. Overall I gotta say there’s not much to complain about, I never really listened to anything that I considered to have an opera style to it (no, SFAM is not a rock opera in my book guys), but it’s quite cool, might listen to this entire concept album sometime soon.
9/10senecadawg2 Damien Rice – 9 Crimes:
What a beautiful voice, and such a beautiful girl too and… OH MY GOD WHERE’S HER BODY. Seriously, this is the first song in the roulette to actually “move” me, it makes the very common song subject of cheating seem so damn devastating, you know a song is doing good if you're willing to find out about the background and stuff, so I guess not only the music hooked me, but the story did too. I always scan through the song to start off the round, just out of curiosity, and I was really scared that this would be a very boring, samey song, that was of course until I actually listened to the song a few times, it started to grow on me tremendously quickly. We now have perfect examples of both singer-songwriter songs gone wrong, and right, make notes people!
9/10Bolsters Thunderstone – Feed The Fire:
Starting it off with an epic guitar riff right off the bat, and strong anthemic vocals. This actually reminds me of the music my dad used to listen to, still checking out some of his old CD’s every once in a while, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Thunderstone, then again, it doesn’t really look like they have yet to make a big name for themselves. What can I say? It’s a great heavy metal tune, you just get it, nothing too complex, just some straight up heavy stuff, worked before with Journey (talking about the straightforward stuff ofcourse, not heavy) but I feel this is working better just because it’s so damn catchy, and even though that chorus is awesome and pretty hard not to sing along to, the guitar tops that high standard and turns this great song into an even greater song.
9/10Parama Thrice – Wood & Wire:
Just the perfect relaxing music, couldn’t have hoped for a better song in this category. The best moments in music are when you have absolutely no idea what makes you like it so much and just go along with it, I could have this as my background theme song for days man. I’m not even a huge fan of any of the instruments separately, but it just works so well altogether, although I guess those drums have eventually grown out to be my favorite thing of it all, kinda gives off a laid back vibe. First off during the rating phase I wanted to have three songs tied for first, but there was no doubt that if one of them would be #1 it would be this song, and that’s what happened after a few more listens. Enjoy your failed 7,5 strategy!

Tom WaitsGreat scores overall guys! I think it's safe to assume you bested the last round yet again, haven't done the calculations but it sure looks like it, which means there's still not
that big of a gap, so all in all, go send me some bad songs so there will be a more clear border between top and bottom!

Next round is open, I think I've received 2 so far, get them in by Tuesday/Wednesday.
