Train of Naught Debut Roulette - And the winner is...
« on: November 03, 2015, 07:36:44 AM »
Welcome to the Train of Naught debut roulette!

Hello and welcome, to the first Train of Naught roulette, I'm relatively new compared to most of you, but that only means you can get away easily with submissions that have been sent a million times, isn't that great? No?..

Basic Rules

I don't know how many participants I'm going to have, I guess whoever comes first, expect around 10 people. For the roulette format, I'm going to have 10 rounds, and the top three participants will be showing off in a final round. I want to mix the roulette up a bit with some themed rounds, expect your standard themed rounds, maybe a few eccentric ones aswell, oh and like Parama, I will name the rounds after some of my favorite songs, so the clever participants can think ahead and maybe predict the round themes (by the way, I'm not going to place the standard themed rounds in the standard round number, or am i? :neverusethis:). My rating system will be the usual 1-10 score, I feel it's the best way.
By all means, make me try out new stuff, I haven't been too active on exploring new music apart from the prog scene, so it's your chance to wow me, of course trying out whacky stuff is appreciated and will be rewarded if succesfull.

Lastly, don't be the one to slow down the roulette by submitting one week too late! I'm a very punctual guy, so you can expect me to be on time every round, I hope I can expect the same from you  >:(.

General tastes:

Of course we all have one thing in common, Dream Theater, that's obvious, but pretty much all of the similar-ish bands I have either heard of and wasn't too fond of, or I already like and will probably be on the banned list.

- Nu-Metal I grew up listening to these popular nu-metal bands that I now realize aren't all that, so don't bother with nu-metal (although I don't think anyone would've gone for it anyway).

- Harsh vocals is usually a hit or miss, but I wouldn't go for all harsh, I like some mixed vocals with nice melodies at times, Protest the Hero is a good example, and if you really want to go all growls, make sure the instrumentation is top notch, cause it has worked in the past, but the chances are very slim.

- Electronic, I don't really care for it, electronic parts in songs doesn't bother me, but dubstep or anything related won't get you anywhere.

- Power Metal wins the cheese most of the times, often to a level where I can't stand it anymore, if you're thinking of power metal, make it as non-cheesy as possible.

- Rock, straight up rock is something I'm getting more and more into over the past few years, so this is fine.

- Vocals in general, this is huge, the vocalist is almost always what makes or breaks the song, as long as the instruments aren't god awful, I like me a singer with a very unique or just straight up amazing voice, especially when they use awesome vocal melodies in their songs.

I got bored of ranking all the artists so I just dumped the rest of them at the bottom of the list and will keep doing so. I'll do like a top 20/25 roulette songs at the end of the roulette.

I'll explain how this works, you have the red list, which is completely off the table, some artists only have one or two banned albums, therefore I have heard absolutely nothing of the other albums and although it's more fun to send odd new stuff, the non-banned albums are available for submission.
The green list is for that individual you secretly have in every roulette, thinking "maybe I can score some easy points with this very popular and interesting song that the host apparently doesn't know for some reason", the artists on the green list are available for entries, but I know their vastly popular material, I'm not going to bother writing down every single song I know, but you get the gist.

(I'm going to complete my banned list during the intro week, before round 1 starts, because I'm sure I missed a few.)

Submitting

Youtube/Spotify is probably the easiest way for me, but sending me an mp3 file is fine too, as long as it's an audio quality I can work with. Whether you want to send it via e-mail or DTF PM, I don't care, I keep my inbox clean so you could go both ways. (marchebv@gmail.com)

On a final note, don't feel rushed, I'm going to let this roulette wait for a bit until there's enough people, and start off when the timing feels right.

I don't have much of an idea of your taste, and your roulette has themes. I usually have a good idea what people like when I join their roulettes, and I've never done one with themes before. But I'd like to join all the same - it should be interesting to try something different.

Electronic, I don't really care for it, electronic parts in songs doesn't bother me, but dubstep or anything related won't get you anywhere.
Didn't you send someone a Pendulum song? I was hoping to get a bit of electronic stuff through. I'm still going to send some despite this warning so watch out.

Well yeah I liked Pendulum back in the days where they were an actual band and played live with their respective instruments, I still enjoy some Electronic, Brookes Brothers is on the banned list (which is Drum and Bass), it is accessible for me, but I want it to be more on the melodic side, and I don't think I've ever heard melodic dubstep :lol.

Dubstep is just one (mostly) lame electronic subgenre - there's some fucking gold in electronic music.

Oh, and I'll join of course.

Go for it! We both profit from good submissions after all.

Some may be very obvious, some may be a stretch (I know at least two of 'em are), but also just take this as a free deeper insight on some of my tastes, obviously these aren't all my favorite songs, after all it had to fit their respective themes atleast slightly.

Alright, we have gotten ourselves 10 participants, I'm willing to set the maximum amount to 12, so if someone still wants in just say so, but this weekend round one will be open for submissions and from there on the roulette will be closed.

Round One: Clarity
Hello folks, you might think this is pretty anticlimactic for a first round, it's an OPEN ROUND, so don't worry, you can send anything you like (but if I don't like it you should still worry).

I was going to start friday, but I guess announcing the round doesn't matter, I'm just making sure everyone knows they can send now, don't feel rushed, I'll start scheduling the songs when I have gotten all of them. The second round will be announced right after the results from round one and so forth.

there's already like 5 or 6 artists i want to send before someone jumps on them because your list has some delicious holes that need plugging omg
my initial list for you has 21 songs already and i may have to improvise for some of the themes so this should definitely turn out disastrous  :lol

edit: SENT. I decided to plug my favorite hole straightaway before someone else gets to it  :lol

Both are new to me, so nothing's getting rejected.

And Evermind, I know about your business trip, I didn't plan on starting the listens this week anyway, I don't even think I'll have everything by then, so it'll probably be by next weekend or something, maybe earlier maybe later.

I'm gonna remedy that fact in the first round. What's your stance on spoken word samples?

Okay, what about live versions of songs? I just found an awesome live studio version of the song I wanted to send, which makes it not really dubstep anymore, but who cares :lol.

This reminded me Pendulum should be on the banned list, edited.

I used to listen to this drumstep artist who had really corny and overly autotuned vocals he did himself, I enjoyed the musical part but the vocals really annoyed me, but if you're planning to use songs with spoken word samples make them not repeat a hundred times in the song and it probably won't be a problem.
As for live studio songs, I don't mind, as long as it doesn't hurt the audio quality.

I think I heard When the Sun Goes Down for the first time at some indie nightclub :lol I guess it was at least a partially benefitial evening.

As for musical preferences, something that fits the theme "Open Round". But seriously, just send anything you think fits my tastes, from the looks of artist names I know I've already received very different types of songs, I'll go through the 'risky picks' so to say shortly for you:

Growls are a risk, but when used properly, can add.
Power Metal is also a risk, only when you have something you think can change my mind about the genre would I recommend it.
Electronic: Can be completely fine, see conversation above.
