One time Columbus tricked a bunch of Jamaican natives into believing he was a god by predicting a lunar eclipse. True story.

Not saying you, but I always find this typical response laughable because in many cases its just parroted by sheep that don't really have a clue about Columbus, but that's the tagline.

Lets face it, people like to get all self righteous about the treatment of native Americans 500 years ago, but that's as far as it goes.
No one really wants to do anything for these people, just point out how badly they were screwed.
Its not too late folks, we can always give them there land back. Or do anything for them besides give them a day that really offers nothing to them overall in any way shape or form.

I, honestly, don't know how important this day is.  I don't think I actually ever had the day off from school on that holiday.  Heck, I'm in school right now typing this post.

It's a fucking stupid holiday and I have no idea why we still celebrate it... not that we get it off in hospice anyway.

Because I love Columbus Day! I love the insignificance of the holiday. Its a Facebook tradition for me. People get all bent that I get excited about the coming of the holiday, as if its like Christmas. I'm a twisted individual Hef! I love that people get all bent out of shape at what a heinous man they think he was. They think that because they read it in posts on social media. Parrots...
In any event, its over for this year!

I don't think it shouldn't be a holiday because of anything that he did.

I don't think that it should be a holiday in America because he didn't discover America.  There is literally NO REASON to have the holiday.  He didn't even realize where he was going.

I would rather we have Millard Fillmore Day than Columbus Day.

I don't know if you're being serious or not, but I definitely think Ben Franklin should deserve his own day. I actually think it would be cool if we had an annual "Important person in American History Day" and each year have a group of people that decides who from our history will be celebrated. Make it some time in spring so we can have a paid day off between New Years Day and Easter.  :lol

No, Arthur actually accomplished a few things.

Fillmore didn't do shit.  So if we are to have a meaningless holiday, he is the guy for it.

In Canada, we don't have Columbus Day.

We do celebrate our Thanksgiving on the same day. It doesn't really celebrate a specific thing, and has been 'dedicated' so to speak to different things over the years, but has always basically been vaguely about having a holiday around harvest time.
