Looking for a certain type of dark ambient music
« on: September 30, 2015, 02:43:04 AM »
I know there has to be something like this out there.  I keep looking for dark ambient music that features nature, but they keep giving me meditative/relaxing nature ambient music.  I'm looking for something that really captures the feeling of being stuck in the wild in the dark with wolves and other animals.  Maybe some ambient piano music with the occasional atmospheric noise accompanied with the howling of wolves.  Something soft, calm and dark.  It doesn't even have to feature animal sounds, but...here, I'll give you an example.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh4CQgWKv9Q

The first 20 seconds of this song is beautiful and is pretty much what I'm looking for.  Then the dub step starts to kick in and, while it's cool, it's not exactly what I'm looking for.  The artwork for the video is amazing and perfectly captures the feeling of isolated dread that the beginning of the song portrays.

I'm not looking for horror background music...more like something that is both beautiful yet foreboding.  Magical yet eerie.  Amazing, yet unsettling.  Think of meditative ambient nature music, but reverse it to be dark instead of light.

Thanks.

Don't know anything from the top of my head, but maybe some video game/film soundtracks will suit you? They are often there to set the tone.

The best dark-ish movie soundtrack I know is the one from Requiem for a Dream, I think everyone is familiar with that one:

people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Dunno how close they are to what you want, but the names that come to mind when you say "dark ambient" are Bohren und der Club of Gore, and Troum.

Oh, or you might be interested in the likes of Tangerine Dream.

You might want to check out Lustmord, it's dark ambient though I'm not sure how much nature sound you'll find

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but give Ben Frost's By the Throat a shot.

I say "not sure" because while it's definitely dark, arctic-themed, and even literally has the sounds of wolves, it might be a bit more abrasive than what you're looking for, as it has elements of noise and drone throughout as well. Skip the first track if it so happens to not catch your fancy.

Check Set Fire to Flames' debut, quite near to what you're looking for. Also, not exactly that, but I'd check Elend - Winds Devouring Men, too.

I was gonna say...I know a BUNCH of video game composers that fit the bill perfectly, but they're not 'bands' per se.

Akira Yamaoka was the first one I'd post, the composer for the Silent Hill games.

Also really great, though in less quantity is Shoji Meguro, the composer for the Shin Megami and Persona games. He is much more electronic/groove oriented, but he also has some really great ambient, slow, brooding tracks as well, you'll just have to search for the ones you like. A lot of piano based tracks. Also, and much more in quantity of the genre you sound like you want, is the Shin Megami Tensei IV soundtrack, especially towards the end. Shoji Meguro didn't compose it, it's actually a few different composers, but it's all up on Youtube (also the soundtrack itself is for sale, I went with that option) to check out and as I said, towards the end of the soundtrack there are a shit ton of awesomely gloomy, ambient, apocalyptic tracks.

As far as actual bands go... The first one that came to mind is Storm Corrosion of Wilson/Akerfeldt collaboration (I almost wrote team-up which sounds so much cooler for men of this caliber).

Other than that...that's about all I've got at the moment. I know how you feel though, and once you've got such a specific sound in your head and want that specific of detail, I think really the only way to find it is to search for it yourself for hours on end through the musical world on the internet.

Great recommendations by Fluffy Lothario. Bohren & Der Club of Gore are great.

These are mine:

Biosphere - Substrata

Biosphere - Dropsonde (the track 'Warmed by the Drift' is excellent)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qevrTJ0Z0wM

Also, this ambient guy named Scanner is supposed to be great according to a friend that loves dark ambient. I haven't checked it out myself.

I still however feel that this one is one of the most atmospheric albums ever, Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack:

Anilah - Warrior (shamanic, pagan type of meditative stuff.. pretty nice): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp0jSaaazU4&list=PLobEMHfBbtTYn7zGysMPrSBHbq4a1emT1

Also, not really dark, but Boards of Canada are amazing.
