Bands that use a lot of vocal harmony
« on: September 18, 2015, 10:19:41 AM »
I'm a sucker for good vocal harmonies, particularly those that are actually different singers rather than overdubbed .

So recommend some bands that use a lot of vocal harmony!

Alice In Chains.  Their vocal harmonies are weird, but definitely one of my favorite components of their music.

Flaming Row.  There's more lyrics in these 120 seconds than you get in an 8 minute song sometimes.

https://youtu.be/g46wJff7Dp0?list=PL3758B0A6EA7F3A68

This album is filled with vocal and overlapping harmonies.

I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

That was the first song I heard from them and it was like a heavier version of King's X.

Absolutely. The Beatles and Queen would probably be classic choices as well. As far as more obscure stuff go, if you're into indie pop, go with a band called of Montreal, they're layering vocal harmonies on top of some extremely weird chord changes, which makes the music very surreal.

Robby Valentine, a Dutch musician who is very influenced by Queen, though I think he does most of the harmonies.

Um, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young would like to disagree....

And I'll second Flaming Row, not just killer harmonies, but just killer vocalists beginning to end.

I'd endorse a lot of the names in this topic, but the OP I know historically isn't into much if any music released before 1990 (maybe that's changed?)

I would suggest Pure Reason Revolution for multiple voices doing vocal harmonies, but from memory, they never really did much for him either.

"The Twyncn / Trembling Willows" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwwIiyFmoxM (the section that starts around 3:35 namely).

Perhaps:
Pepe Deluxe - Queen of the Wave
Apes and Androids or Call Florence Pow
Small Leaks Sink Ships  - Face Yourself and Remove Your Sandals (the ending of the final track "The Mind is its Own Place" https://smallleaks.bandcamp.com/track/the-mind-is-its-own-place-2 )

Baroness for sure are a band you should check out. You get some great harmonies and filthy guitar as a bonus.
The Mars Volta do some harmonizing for days, octahedron a good album for that especially.

Ah, of course, CSN are one of the all time greats no denying that, but have ya seen the Eagles live lately?

Sometimes they have 8 bastards singing at once, all tight as a ticks anus.  That's quite an achievement for a live rock n rewl band.

Anything Myles Kennedy puts out, Alter Bridge and World on Fire + Apocalyptic Love in particular.
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Arstidir, a folk band from Iceland with a few prog elements. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgnZ7sMUCFs

(I registered just to recommend them, but I've been reading this forum for years. So, hi everyone. :))
