Seven Nation Army?
Great call. If I didn't see this post, I would probably go with Song 2 by Blur.

Also, I've got a controversial suggestion for a very recent riff that might be considered a classic years from now - Do I wanna known by Arctic monkeys. I'm not a fan of this band and the song itself is kind of just solid, but man, that riff really has a classic feel to it, not to mention that the song turned out to be a huge hit and everybody knows the riff.

Is it bad that I've never heard the Enter Sandman riff nor the song until a few minutes ago? :P

How is that even possible? It's the most popular song written by the most successful metal band of all time. I truly can't believe that you have never heard it until today.
Maybe it's due to where I live, where they rarely play metal on any media, and if they do, they are national acts. To be honest, kind of expected to recognise the riff, but never heard of it before. Just sounded a bit similar to Peruvian Skies, which is the better song ;D

I used to like Orion and The Call of Cthulhu some years ago, but never returned to them after discovering DT and prog.

Hmm. And even having heard those you have no interest in Metallica. I guess I can't help you, then.
I recall buying Master of Puppets in a supermarket years ago, just because Orion interested me, but it bored me to tears :lol

that's entirely interesting that you'd never heard Enter Sandman, Sacul. maybe you just suppressed it from yo memory(?).

So, is Seven Nation Army the song or the band? and if I'm not familiar, is it best I don't go looking it up?

And while not exactly recent, there's gotta be some riffs from Mellon Collie that count (Zero and Bullet With Butterfly Wings) and are at least more recent than those cited by the OP.

I was surprised I recognized Seven Nation Army when I youtubed it. I didn't recognize it by name. Same with Song 2. Guess those riffs are pretty prevalent.

smells like teen spirit is another one. it's obviously not that recent, but it's the same year as enter sandman, and had the same effect for both bands.

Classic might have been the wrong word choice, but I think most of you got what I meant.

Yeah, there's some here not "getting" you're looking only for famous recent riffs.

Ah, another one (maybe): Bloc Party - Banquet.

"Helicopter" by them appeared in many video game OSTs too.

The No Limit riff is kinda cool, hehe. There is Darude "Sandstorm" and the Mortal Kombat theme riffs too  :P

Jokes aside, Mainstream Eletronic has lots of memorable "riffs" too but they probably don't qualify to what the TC wanted (Guitar riffs only).

Ranking Metallica instrumentals? Easy!

To Live is to Die
Call of Ktulu

Suicide & Redemption

Orion

All amazing though.

The Call of Ktulu
Orion
(more of a 1a/1b thing for those two)

To Live Is To Die
(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth
Suicide & Redemption
Winger would be better!

. . . and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

Yes I was thinking that since it has an actual "riff". Firestarter is more well known but doesn't really have a "riff".

Yea well I guess I'm in the vast minority when I say that Death Magnetic is in my top 4 Metallica albums, and S&R isn't even in my top half of DM songs.

Going forward with the mainstream electronic, Kotowboy, "Better Off Alone" by Alice DJ is another very famous riff (also because David Guetta sampled the riff in "Play Hard", which has 370 million views in YouTube).

Also, another one: "Rhythm is a Dancer".

Back to rock: i noticed no one mentioned Nirvana's "Come As You Are" and "In Bloom" (both released as a single during 92' so, after "Enter Sandman").

To quote MP, there is no "better," just "favorites."

That said, I have to agree with that ranking too, pretty much. Orion has been played out for me. I have a blu ray of a Copenhagen show where they play S&R for the first time, they just kill it. So nasty. Been my favorite ever since.

1. Suicide & Redemption
2. To Live is to Die
3. The Call of Ktulu
4. Orion

Edit: On topic, a few of Rise Against's hits have some pretty good riffs. Prayer of the Refugee, Re-Education Through Labor, Help is on the Way, etc... The Winery Dogs's Elevate & Desire are pretty killer too. Not much in the way of famous riffs these days, though, other than what has already been said. Good call on Joker and the Thief; they play that at Bruins games now. Good riff.

I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

To Live Is To Die is incredible. Honestly it's quite easily my favorite Metallica song.
And if spirit's a sign,
Then it's only a matter of time
