The Queensryche new album cover thread made me think of this. Honestly, I rarely care about the album cover. But there are some that off the top of my head struck me as intriguing and/or just nice to look at then and even still today. They are:

Metallica - Master of Puppets

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

King's X - King's X

Iron Maiden - Powerslave

Are these my absolute favorites? I've never made an effort in the past and this was no exception. Just took a bit of time to brainstorm. So I probably missed some good ones.

Obviously the content matters, but I really am drawn to color schemes. Certain combinations of colors just seem to draw me in.

I don't know if Live Releases count, but I'm doing it anyway. I say the Rush in Rio cover is great. It's a friken Purple Dragon with a fruit hat, and a coconut cup, with beads on him, on a stage, in front of a rabid crowd, with some small pyro with the guys presumably behind him. What's not to love about that?

Pretty much almost anything done by Storm Thorgerson. He had such a taste for abstract simplicity that was still easily identifiable.

I'd go as far to say that I slightly prefer his original artwork for The Mars Volta's Amputetchure over the actual cover.
