Not quite the same thing, but I recently finished a few months of PT for a shoulder issue...true to form for an old fogey, I tore my labrum getting an overloaded reuseable grocery bag out of the car with my arm at a weird angle.  No matter what, PT should be good for you...the stronger the muscles, the more they can ease the burden on the structural bits and keep everything from moving around as much, and the less likely you will be to re-injure it.

I'm glad that your shoulder is doing better after the fall, but jesus, that is kind of horrifying.  And probably not a viable treatment strategy if you hurt it again.

- held up Bic lighters for nine seconds at concerts (because that's how long it took to burn your finger on the flame) instead of cameras for 45 minutes.

I do both  :lol seriously get people calling me old school when I pull out a lighter instead of my phone's flashlight. But I find fire to be so much more interesting than a flash light.

I didn't actually fall - I shudder to think what that would've been like.  Yikes!  But in the process of almost falling, I threw my arm out and forward very quickly and kind snapped something back into place.

Saw the PT today.  He does think it was possible the tendon had allowed the bone to slip out of the socket slightly.  If it had been dislocated, no way I could've even lifted my arm.  At any rate, things are progressing finally and I can tolerate some strengthening exercises which make me feel about 90 years old.  That said, wall slides in the shower are the only way to do them.

Interesting you mentioned your labrum, this was another likely candidate for consideration.  If I only progress a little and then stagnate, I see an MRI in my future to rule out a torn labrum.  That's where a lot of my pain was prior to last week.  And it is much, much improved now.

I dream of one day in the future being able to do a push up or a jumping jack again....

Here's a fun trick to tell if it's your labrum/rotator cuff: With the affected arm, place the back of your hand on your lower back, opposite your belly button.  Then try to move you hand out away from your back, keeping it at about the same level.  If you spasm, that is the hallmark of that kind of tear.

Sounds like a good trick.  The only problem is there is no way I can even put my arm in that position to begin with because of my shoulder problem.   :lol

Seriously though, I did try.  And I can only get my arm about butt high.  And this is a vast improvement from only a week ago!  Last week I couldn't even reach behind me at all.

So I turn 40 this year.  I've never broken a bone in the last 39 years....until now.  Was at a kids birthday party and climbing in an inflatable slide with my 2-year old son. I slipped and didn't want to let him go, so I went down hard, vertically, rather than falling backward.  Dropped a few feet and my foot bent one way or the other.  Instant pain.

Break at the base of the fifth metatarsal, on my left foot.  So essentially the left side of my left foot.  Hurt like hell and had an immediate lump and swelling on the foot.  The best part?  We had to leave the party....I'm driving home, with a broken left foot, from one town over....IN A SNOWSTORM.  Had to stop at the drive-thru for food for the kids and wife, dropped them off at home, then ran to the ER.  X-Rays and a temporary cast for now.

Still have to see a specialist this week to find out how bad the break is and what kind of recovery I'll have.  Thankfully I'm still pretty fit, though both of my feet are killing me.  It's not like the kids are old enough to leave me alone and let me rest.  More fun to come this week!

Thanks for the compliments.   :lol  I just grit my teeth and did my best. Had to tell my wife and daughter to stop talking, so I could concentrate on driving in the snow with a throbbing foot.

Appointment later today with the orthopedic surgeon, so I should know more.  I'm guessing a permanent cast and continuing to keep my weight off of it for a number of weeks.  I still can't really put weight on it, so I don't see how I could get a walking cast.

You'd be surprised.  Mrs.jingle broke her foot in the summer, and was in a walking cast for 3 weeks, then just tried to minimize the weight on it for another 3 weeks.  Although, a friend of hers also broke her foot around the same time, and has had 3 surgeries and is still a wreck.

You'd be surprised.

I am surprised!  I do have a walking boot, which is pretty comfortable. The ER doc had me worried with his concern, plus I always think and plan for the worst.  It's still very tender to walk on, but at least I dont need crutches all of the time.

I should clarify... she was in a walking boot / air-cast thing-a-ma-bob.  Not a walking cast.

Hopefully you have a similar experience that mrs.jingle had - and not her friend.

So... I turn 40 this year too.

Exploded my calve muscle last night at b-ball.  From what I've read and the sound I heard (audible pop) it's probably a medium tear.  I can walk, climb stairs, workout (kettle-bell swings, squats, basically everything but calve raises) but I can't plant my foot in any lateral direction or run.  No swelling to speak of, but I can feel a nodule on the inside portion of my calve muscle.  4-6 weeks out I say... I have an appointment with an ortho 1-23.

Hoping this injury gets me in the club this year...

Ouch!   It doesn't necessarily take an injury to join the club, but I'm sure it helps.  I've had aches and pains for the last year or two, despite being pretty healthy otherwise.

And the food was McDonalds.  My kids are addicted to nuggets and fries.  Neither wanted to leave the kids party and they were both exhausted.  It was the easiest way to pacify them since I was going to the ER for a period of time, leaving my wife home with two tired, crabby kids.

I feel bad because I was very short with the drive thru employee, but my foot was killing me at the time and swelling very rapidly.  I wasn't in the mood to repeat my order or specify whether I needed apple slices or yogurt in the happy meals.

:lol Yeah, it did seem a bit like I was bragging, didn't it.

What I should point out is that I was unable to do my pre-bed-dismount-Orbert-stretches this morning. I've got a few more pills to navigate (up to eight per day now). And I can sense a brutally painful morning-mud building up pressure. That's more thread appropriate.

Hernias suck. I gave myself one in 2014, and when they cut me open, they found another. The next couple weeks, especially the first, were agonizing. Getting in and out of bed was a nightmare and I could barely walk upstairs to my bedroom when I got home. Basically spent a week mindlessly playing video games and reading, popping hydros, passing out for a couple hours after that, and repeating the process.

I will second the 'giving birth' thing. I have never come that close to understanding a woman's pain. Surgery was on Monday, and that experience happened on Thursday. Mother of god.

Now I will show myself out since this is the old folks' home. I'm just visiting the senior citizens.  :lol

So far so good. It's been 48 hours since they cut me open and I've been able to control the pain with Ibuprofen. Haven't taken the Tylenol with Codeine since leaving the hospital...I hate the loopy feeling of that shit.

My Johnson has turned black though...which I've always wanted, but I'd always imagined it would get bigger too. No such luck.  :|

He said lowest point and my first thought was WTF, your noodle drag on the ground like a wedding dress or something??

When your hung like Gregg, the blood always goes south.

I wish!  :lol

No, it's just that I've been lying down or sitting quite a bit with my feet elevated while wearing loose clothing. My John-Henry-Thomas has been dangling between my thighs and since it's close to the incision point, blood has been pooling in the sorry little guy. Turned him a nice shade of purple-black.

So, I don't know if my type of hernia just wasn't as severe as you other folks, or if my Surgeon was superior to yours (maybe a combination of the two), but my recovery has been pretty easy so far! I actually had Mrs. P take me into the office earlier to get about 20 minutes of work done that I can't do from home. I was scheduled to take more ibuprofen an hour ago, but don't feel that it's necessary. I sure hope the rest of the recovery goes this well!

Words of advice: depending the surgery, listen to the doc, don't strain yourself, and be a baby.  Don't be a 'he-man'.  Get help lifting things that you had done by yourself in the past.  Some people are good to go after two weeks.  It was three months or more for me.   The following year, I was hitting the golf ball just as far as before the surgery, but I made sure everything was 'right' before 'going down to the putting green and popping them in their holes'.
