Me too.  You have to fight Nick and I for them.

I'm also staking my claim on Clockwork.

Hey, have I mentioned Lights in this thread?  I'm pretty much obsessed with her.  Her music is awesome.

And I can't see her getting a lot of popularity among the usual demographics covered by DT fans.  At least, not for her music.

If you don't mind, I'll just take my man card back.  I'm sure it was an honest mistake on your part.

I saw Return to Forever in 2008. I love Romantic Warrior especially, but also a lot of their other records. You're hardly the only RTF fan around here.

I'm always trying to get people to listen to this band, but it's difficult because they split up a couple of years ago, and fiinding their stuff is damn near impossible. They have a couple of albums and some EPs, but by far the best thing they did was an album called 'A Perfect Life With A View Of The Swamp.' In my opinion it is a masterpiece. Their base sound is similar to Tool, but they also have tracks which are electronica, drum'n'bass, rap, spoken word, ambient, and more. Therefore it is impossible to encapsulate their sound in one song, but this is a good one anyway

I'll throw in Pathosray, Presto Ballet and Neverending White Lights.
All of which should be more appreciated.

people obviously don't read older posts. I've been a fan of Neverending White Lights for like 3 years, lol. Jimmy Gnecco of OURS sings on both Acts.

I would say I'm one of the only fans of most of the bands on this list.

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/SoundscapeMN/new_prog_umbrella

considering I posted that link already, I'll post the whole list as well.

1
This Is the Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank   Adebisi Shank

great melodic, quirky, well-written MATH ROCK.

https://myspace.com/adebisishank

2
My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go   Aereogramme

https://myspace.com/aereogrammeofficial

3
   Hannah   The Age of Rockets

https://myspace.com/theageofrockets

described as "Indietronica" but 2008's "Hannah" while including some subtle electronic content, also has a nice emphasis on Chamber and Orchestral compositions. People who like The Dear Hunter style of classical music-tinged Pop/Rock music. This band can appeal to as well.

4
   Floating World   Anathallo

https://myspace.com/anathallo

5
   Be He Me   Annuals

Psych-Pop sorta falls under the umbrella.

https://myspace.com/annuals

6
   Blood Moon   Apes and Androids

https://myspace.com/apesandandroids

7
   Topsy-Turvy   The Apex Theory

their last 2 eps especially and a bit of the new record "Faces" under the "Mt.Helium" name now.

https://myspace.com/mthelium

8
New Magnetic Wonder   The Apples in Stereo

https://myspace.com/theapplesinstereo

9
   Peregrine   The Appleseed Cast

https://myspace.com/theappleseedcast

10
You All Look the Same to Me   Archive

https://myspace.com/archiveuk

11
   Waking the Fallen   Avenged Sevenfold

By including Protest the Hero, pretty much requires these guys fall under the umbrella as well.

https://myspace.com/avengedsevenfold

12
   Mirrored   Battles

Maybe the 1st and most accessible "Math Rock" band. Dance-able, yet at times technical. Odd, quirky vocal style

https://myspace.com/battlestheband

13
Stories of Brothers, Tales of Lovers    Bend Sinister

I love their debut album "Through the Broken City" and 2008's follow-up LP "Stories of Brothers, Tales of Lovers" is perhaps best seen as being greater than the sum of it's parts.

https://myspace.com/bendsinistervancouver

14
Colors   Between the Buried and Me

https://myspace.com/betweentheburiedandmeband

15
A Thousand Conscious Moments   Between Two Skies

maybe my favorite band from my hometown. The new material is very surreal live. A full-length LP could finally surface in 2009.

https://myspace.com/betweentwoskies

16
The Vertigo of Bliss   Biffy Clyro

experimental pop/hard/alt rock. 2007's "Puzzle" is my favorite.

https://myspace.com/biffyclyro

17
   Big Fresh Forever   Big Fresh

nc band whose 2008 album "Big Fresh Forever" has a lot of great psychedelic power-pop.

https://myspace.com/bigfresh

18
   Black Mountain   Black Mountain

psychedelic stoner hard-rock

https://myspace.com/blackmountain

19
   Blackfield II   Blackfield

Steven Wilson more pop-oriented project. Very layered and textured. And of course very melancholy.

https://myspace.com/blackfield

20
   After Robots   BLK JKS

21
A Weekend in the City   Bloc Party

The experimental element of this band cannot be argued.

https://myspace.com/blocparty

22
   Focus   BrainFreeze

Funky, soulful psych blues. Unknow, free album from this dutch band who sound American.

23
   The Philosophy of Velocity   Brazil

"Hostage and the Meaning of Life" has 5 or 6 solid tracks. The rest of their material is mediocre from my experience.

24
You Forgot It in People   Broken Social Scene

https://myspace.com/brokensocialscene

25
These Are the Plans   Call Florence Pow

Brian Jacobs and David Tobias 1st band before forming Apes and Androids.

26
   Home   Gavin Castleton

The guy behind Gruis Malt and Ebu Gogo
his new solo album "Home" (2009)  is pretty good at times, even if it is a bit heavy on the rock-opera/conceptual style. And the fact he sounds like Nick D'Virgilio at times. But melodically much of it works in a Dear Hunter-kind of way.

https://myspace.com/gavincastleton

27
   Orion Way   Cavil at Rest

https://myspace.com/cavilatrest
https://myspace.com/localnatives

28
   Ham   The Chap

https://myspace.com/thechap

the UK's answer to Self?..they definitely tap into that heavy-synth/humor/experimental electronic-pop/rock songwriting style.

29
The Complexity Of Light   Children of Nova

https://myspace.com/childrenofnova

"The Complexity of Light" is decent ep from 2009. Shows potential. They have some great moments especially vocally and the guitar lines at times. I guess I'm kind of a cautiously optimistic fan of this band. Are they more of a Far-Less or Abandoned Pools, or Sound & Shape or Distrails. Their next release and where their new ep goes with me will make that clear.

30
Black Coats & Bandages   Clann Zú

https://myspace.com/clannzu

31
Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV: Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness   Coheed and Cambria

https://myspace.com/coheedandcambria

32
   M(us)ic   Damiera

33
Rewiring the Electric Forest   Darla Farmer

34
Dead Letter Circus   Dead Letter Circus

great debut ep..in the alt-prog vein from Australia..much like Karnivool.

https://myspace.com/deadlettercircus

35
Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. Leading   The Dear Hunter

Casey Crescenzo = incredible songwriter.

https://myspace.com/thedearhunter

36
   The Crane Wife   The Decemberists

clever lyrics, and a lot of experimental sides to this band. Each record seems conceptual.

https://myspace.com/thedecemberists

37
   Building an Empire   Demians

https://myspace.com/demiansmusic

38
   The Dissociatives   The Dissociatives

39
   Virginia Creeper   Distrails

Classically-influenced alt-prog-pop. "Virginia Creeper" from 2008 was a very impressive ep from this NC husband&wife duo.

https://myspace.com/distrails

a sideproject of the band "Telescreen" (Jared, the drummer also in with Telescreen)

40
You, You're a History in Rust   Do Make Say Think

41
   The Last Broadcast   Doves

https://myspace.com/dovesmyspace

42
   El Cielo   dredg

https://myspace.com/dredg

43
The Dresden Dolls   The Dresden Dolls

44
East of the Wall   East of the Wall

2008's "Farmer's Almanac" is a really well composed instrumental prog/post metal record.

https://myspace.com/eastofthewall

45
Time to Echolocate   The Ebb and Flow

catchy psychedelic pop/rock.

https://myspace.com/theebbandflow

46
   Worlds   Ebu Gogo

possibly now defunct video-gam jazz-metal project from Gavin Castleton of Gruvis Malt and solo career.

https://myspace.com/ebugogo

47
   Hisen the Architect   Eroica

48
Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True   Fair to Midland

https://myspace.com/fairtomidland

49
Everyone Is Out To Get Us   Far-Less

https://myspace.com/farless

50
   Everything Last Winter   Fields

folky pop with some cool vocal-harmonies.

https://myspace.com/fieldsband

51
   Antidotes   Foals

52
   Escapements   The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra

https://myspace.com/theflyingtourbillon

orchestral-pop. "Escapements" their Ep from 2008 shows a lot of potential. Xylophone, male+female vocals. Definitely seem to be in the vein of groups like Anathallo, Margot, Umbrella Tree, etc.

53
All Is Violent, All Is Bright   God Is an Astronaut

54
Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!   Godspeed You! Black Emperor

55
   Grammatics   Grammatics

https://myspace.com/grammatics

56
   Saturnalia   The Gutter Twins

57
   Telluric Currents   Greg Herriges

https://myspace.com/gregherriges

the guy is just too damn good not to be included here. The local factor has nothing to do with it. He's really created his own style of music, and has written a number of excellent songs/compositions on both "It Plays Me" and his latest, 2009's "Telluric Currents."

This is as progressive of music being made today. Combining East Indian and other Middle Eastern styles, with folk, acoustic, and progressive rock. It's a diverse mix, but it totally works the way he does it.

And like most of the names on this list, it's criminal that nobody knows him or has even caught on via the web. All those people need to turn off their Rodrigo y Gabriela and Andy McKee cds, and give this guy's music a shot. He'll likely win them over as he has to pretty much every 1st-time crowd I've seen at his shows, especially over the last few years.

58
Hills Like White Elephants   Hills Like White Elephants

59
Old Dominion   Hotel of the Laughing Tree

https://myspace.com/hotelofthelaughingtree

60
Live and Learn   House of Fools

"Live and Learn" 2007's debut album is epic and still criminally unknown.

https://myspace.com/houseoffools

61
   Speak for Yourself   Imogen Heap

classically trained, textured and experimental..under the umbrella.

https://myspace.com/imogenheap

62
   Red Right Turn   Janus

https://myspace.com/janusband

63
   T.C.H.T.O.B.   Jared Micah & Hats

experimental, layered, complex with multi-part arrangements including a lot of percussion and vocal-harmonies.

https://myspace.com/jaredmicah

64
   Kacica   Kacica

https://myspace.com/kacicajapan

oh man I dig the Dreamy, Ethereal quality with this band. Perhaps midway between Mew and Deerhoof.

65
   Themata   Karnivool

awesome, big-sounding, melodic, alt/prog metal.

https://myspace.com/karnivool

66
   Set Sail the Prairie   Kaddisfly

2007's "Set Sail the Prairie" = epic masterpiece.

https://myspace.com/kaddisfly

67
Reality vs. the Optimist   Kiss Kiss

awesomely tight band. They cram a ton of ideas into a short amount of time. Great violin and dynamics among many other qualities that appeal about them.

https://myspace.com/kisskiss

68
   Dopoguerra   Klimt 1918

layered and experimental enough to cross in this territory.

https://myspace.com/klimt1918

69
   Flight of the Flynns   Kunek

now known as "Other Lives."

https://myspace.com/kunek
https://myspace.com/otherlives

70
Fantasy Black Channel   Late of the Pier

https://myspace.com/lateofthepier

"Indietronica" but also just call it experimental synth-driven
(power) pop/rock.

Fall in line with Apes and Androids and Self, also Men, Women and Children and Mute Math to an extent.

71
   Gorilla Manor   Local Natives

https://myspace.com/localnatives

new name for the band who was called "Cavil at Rest"

"Gorilla Manor" their yet-to-be-released debut album very likely will put them on the map. Psychedelic, Folky, Power-Pop/Rock. Every song they've written is quite good.

72
Avoid the Light   Long Distance Calling

This a great new band from Germany. 2009's "Avoid the Light" is a near-classic. Progressive Psychedelic Instrumentally-based Post-Metal.

https://myspace.com/longdistancecalling

73
   Trompe-l'œil   Malajube

https://myspace.com/malajube

74
The Dust of Retreat   Margot and the Nuclear So and So's

layered, chamber pop/rock.

https://myspace.com/margotandthenuclearsoandsos

75
De-Loused in the Comatorium   The Mars Volta

https://myspace.com/themarsvolta

76
   Passing Stranger   Scott Matthews

he may sound a lot like Jeff Buckley, but the guy is a very good songwriter. And he's hardly run-of-the-mill. Quite experimental in some of the arrangements.

https://myspace.com/scottmatthews

77
   Absence of I   Meniscus

https://myspace.com/meniscusmusic

78
   Friend and Foe   Menomena

great songwriting, a lot of percussive and organic sounds.

https://myspace.com/menomena

79
   The Alcatraz Kid   Jeremy Messersmith

like Sufjan, adding many elements to singer-songwriter style, and also composing music as a larger concept. Loosely falling under the progressive rock area imo.

https://myspace.com/jeremymessersmith

80
   Wolves   My Latest Novel

https://myspace.com/mylatestnovel

their new 2009 record "Death and Entrances" is chamber or psychedelic enough to convince me they belong here. The Anathallo comparisons are very valid.

81
   Dark Opus   Judgement Day

82
There's a Moth in Your Chest   Mason Proper

layered, psychedelic, pop. I love a lot of what these guys do, much like I love groups like Margot and the Nuclea So and So's and Wolf Parade.

83
Men Women & Children   Men Women & Children

more of a "indietronica" band than anything else. Their debut album is catchy, and what sounds like dance-music in ways, actually is rather layered. The fat-synths work really well. Not "prog" but experimental and adventurous, probably moreso in many ways to the other projects the guys in this group were involved with (Glassjaw, Head Automatica?)
https://myspace.com/menwomenandchildren

84
And the Glass Handed Kites   Mew

Surreal, dramatic, textured, vocal harmonies.

https://myspace.com/mew

85
The Trials of Van Occupanther   Midlake

a definite psych element in their music.

https://myspace.com/midlake

86
Highly Refined Pirates   Minus the Bear

https://myspace.com/minusthebear

87
Underwater Cinematographer   The Most Serene Republic

88
Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them?   Murder by Death

the 1st 2 records I feel fall under this umbrella. Experimental, alt-western pop/rock.

89
   Black Holes and Revelations   Muse

https://myspace.com/muse

90
   Mute Math   Mute Math

https://myspace.com/mutemath

91
   イリヤ -Il y a-   Mutyumu

modern Classical/Opera/Jazz/Ambient/Hardcore.

https://myspace.com/mutyumu

92
Act I: Goodbye Friends of the Heavenly Bodies   Neverending White Lights

conceptual, textured, emotional pop/rock

https://myspace.com/neverendingwhitelights

93
   Twin Cinema   The New Pornographers

great songwriting. Psychedelic Power-Pop.

https://myspace.com/thenewpornographers

94
my city of ghosts, stars and hours   note.

95
   Everyone Into Position   Oceansize

https://myspace.com/oceansizeuk

96
   100Ft Snowman   100Ft Snowman

97
   Humbility   Oedipus

I've only heard 2004's "Humbility" but, surprisingly less derivative and have more of a signature sound than I thought. Funky and bass-drive at times, alt-prog I suppose. Biffy Clyro, Opus Dai I suppose are the closest comparison, but there a lot of what they do that is different. And the songs are pretty well-written.

Love the jazzy ballad with the trumpet.

https://myspace.com/oedipus

98
   Escape From the Sun   Operahouse

*Indietronica* very much in the company with Age of Rockets and Late of the Pier and of course Apes and Androids. Sadly, they broke up a short time after their debut album was released.

99
   Tierra Tragame   Opus Däi

100
   Office of Strategic Influence   OSI

https://myspace.com/osiband

101
   Distorted Lullabies   Ours

https://myspace.com/oursmusic

102
Blessed Are the Bonds   The Pax Cecilia

https://myspace.com/thepaxcecilia

103
And This Will Be Our Homecoming   People for Audio

104
The Beginning Stages Of...   The Polyphonic Spree

105
Fear of a Blank Planet   Porcupine Tree

https://myspace.com/porcupinetree

106
   Kezia   Protest the Hero

107
The Dark Third   Pure Reason Revolution

https://myspace.com/purereasonrevolution

108
   Intuit   Ramona Falls

Brent Knopf of Menomena's excellent solo project.

https://myspace.com/ramonafalls

109
Between the Heart and the Synapse   The Receiving End of Sirens

textures, layers, vocal arrangements.
"Between the Heart and the Synapse" is an all-time classic.

https://myspace.com/thereceivingendofsirens

110
The Reign of Kindo EP   The Reign of Kindo

111
   The Escape Artist   Revere

112
Place & Time   The Rockwells [USA]

Power-Pop that is experimental enough to fall under the umbrella.

https://myspace.com/therockwells1

113
   Enter   Russian Circles

114
   Subliminal Plastic Motives   Self

115
   Sholi   Sholi

https://myspace.com/sholimusic

Impressive debut album from 2009. Their drummer stands out especially.

116
   Ágætis byrjun   Sigur Rós

117
   Young Modern   Silverchair

"Diorama" and the latest "Young Modern" certainly fall under the umbrella.

118
Never Was There a Town   Slowlands

a comparison to Local  Natives isn't that far-fetched. Singer reminds me of the clean vocals Toby Driver uses. Good, textured, folky/mellow-at-times stuff.

RIP https://myspace.com/slowlands

119
The Love Electric   Sound & Shape

Very impressive ep from 2009 "The Love Electric"..they have a lot of the Mars Volta-sound, but without the extra avant-garde noodling. But instead, they even have some nice vocal harmonies.

https://myspace.com/soundandshape

120
   From Here on In   South

see "With the Tides" the rest of their albums are more or less forgettable.

121
   Marry Me   St. Vincent

122
   Stateless   Stateless

https://myspace.com/statelessonline

123
Masochism in the Place of Romance   The Stiletto Formal

124
   Illinois   Sufjan Stevens

125
Strata Presents the End of the World   Strata

126
   Toxicity   System of a Down

127
Tiny Fragments   Tangled Thoughts of Leaving

https://myspace.com/ttol

more to add, but this band uses piano really well!

128
   Wake Pig   3

129
   Sarcast While   Time of Orchids

rip in 2007. Not maudlin of the Well, but much better than Kayo Dot.

130
What Kind of Books Do You Read?   Umbrella Tree

Just a guess..but I'm quite intrigued by this group whose sort of 1-part psych, 1-part chamber, 1 part Power-Pop Wolf Parade, The Ebb & Flow, Big Fresh are among the groups who they remind me of.

https://myspace.com/umbrellatree

131
   Anchor Drops   Umphrey's McGee

132
VAST (Visual Audio Sensory Theater)   VAST

debut album especially.

133
   Exquisite Corpse   Warpaint

I've been won over in many ways over the last week by this female-based band who uses ambient guitar textures, dreamy vocal harmonies, and moods extremely well.

https://myspace.com/worldwartour

"Exquisite Corpse" is a really great debut ep that was re-released October 2009. The debut full-length is expected in the Spring of 2010. Certainly one I'm excited for.

Very much reminds me of discovering the likes of Cavil at Rest, 100ft Snowman, Distrails, and even The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra. A lot of talent there, and very much untapped and undiscovered.

Cavil at Rest now Local Natives very likely will not be the little unknown band that could soon. The same may go for these sweethearts from CA.

134
Water & Bodies EP   Water & Bodies

new project from 4 of the members of Kaddisfly. Different but still similar in some ways. Stripped-down and recorded all-live. The new EP is out now (digital 5/15/09) and a debut full-length could happen by the end of 2009 or early 2010.

https://www.raincityrecords.net/waterandbodies
https://myspace.com/waterandbodies

135
Apologies to the Queen Mary   Wolf Parade

definitely a psych element on their latest "At Mt.Zoomer" especially.

136
   8 Bit Monk   Woven

textured, moody, ambient but not to the point of boredom.

The following bands already have a tonne of fans on the forum and several threads for them, dunno why you think you're the only fan, or why you needed to list them.

Between The Buried and Me
The Dear Hunter
dredg
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Muse
OSI
Porcupine Tree
System of a Down
Sigur Ros
Protest The Hero

anyway, that is indeed an impressive array of little known bands you are a fan of.
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

I'd add Blackfield to the bands Portrucci mentioned.

Also, I believe I can consider myself a fan of The Dresden Dolls, although I definitely wouldn't fight for the "greatest" fan. ;)

Add Blackfield and Avenged Sevenfold to that list as well.

I may not be the only fan, but I never heard even a mention of these bands, all of whom I like:
Great Big Sea

I've got 8 Great Big Sea CDs and 2 DVDs. I think they are great! I've even seen them live once.

I have 6 no-man CDs. I like them more than Porcupine Tree. Actually I like most of what Steven Wilson does except for a lot of Porcupine Tree.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Have 2 CDs although it's been ages since I've listened to them.
