Lots of good ones in earlier Ryche.  Take Hold, Propechy, Nightrider etc.

Some of my all time favorite solos probably wouldn't fall under the "metal" category, but I'll stick with the genre..

1. George Lynch - Heaven Sent, In My Dreams, Into the Fire
2. Criss Oliva - Edge of Thorns, All That I Bleed
3. Yngwie - I'd Die Without You
4. Tom Englund and Henrik Danhage - King of Errors
5. Nuno Bettencourt - too many to mention
6. Warren Demartini and Robbin Crosby - Wanted Man

I've always loved Petrucci's solo in Hollow Years @ Budokan, even though that's not a metal song. Another favourite of mine is actually a solo from our guitarist (out of this world), here's a link: https://youtu.be/KSV9aRr9qNc?t=5m37s

Another Yngwie one from Magnum Opus.  That's actually quite an underrated one from him IMO.  Cross the Line is stellar too.

Speaking of Evergrey, they have loads of brilliant ones.  My fav is probably Tom's A Touch of Blessing solo.  I remember when I got the album I use to just repeat that solo, it's incredible.

Possibly Priest's most underrated solos, and top 5 KK solo anyway.  Some of the trickest stuff they have come up with too.

That harmonized solo is amazing. It gives me chills every time I hear it.

Yeah dude I thoroughly enjoyed it. :tup

Anyway to get on topic my favorite guitar, while not metal, would probably be Steve Hackett's solo in the live recording of The Lamia. Blows me away every time.

Love the solo(s) on Aces High by Maiden.

That said, even though I love metal, I don't find metal guitar solos anywhere near as interesting as those made by practitioners of 70s hard rock and prog, i.e. Jimmy Page , David Gilmour ,Jerry Garcia, Steve Howe\Hackett, Alex Lifeson,  Rossington-Collins, Martin Barre, etc

Although I'm a metalhead, I can see what you're saying.  Most of those guys have really creative and memorable solos.

Two of my faves that haven't been mentioned:

Dancing Mad -The Black Mages

It's a slow burner of a track and has some different styles. Is a bit EL&P in places but the build up makes the solo even better, it's just beautiful and I often air guitar alone in my room to it, actually I  air guitar to it whilst walking down the road and get funny looks 😈

In the Fire - Roadrunner United Album.

This track is from the roadrunner united album that roadrunner records put out to celebrate their 25th (I think) anniversary. The album featured a crazy list of past and present musicians signed to roadrunner. This particular track features King Diamond  :metal on vocals but the solo us by Corey Beaulieu from Trivium and is just a perfect metal solo (in my opinion) been listening to this song for 10 years and still love it.

Classic era JRPG music is basically 70's prog rock, I'm sure a lot of the posters here would love the soundtracks to Chrono Trigger and FF6.

This is indeed a good solid metal solo, even if it is pretty generic.  Great song and a definite standout on that album.  Although, Matt does parts of the solo also.  Goes Matt-Coery-Matt-Corey to end.

Also, come to think of it, Jeff Waters solo on The Dagger I think it is, is friggin awesome too from that same album.

Jeff Waters is massively under rated.  If he had as much talent re keeping a decent band together as he does natural talent as a guitarist maybe things would be different.

Very underrated.  I always wanted to see him in a decent heavy metal band.  When I mean decent, Annihilator is good but I think his skills would be much better off in a more prog/melodic/classic style band as opposed to the thrash thing.

As you say though, if Annihilator could stay consistent, the band might be much more enjoyable and accessible.

Heh, I was just listening to the Black Mages recently and that solo made me think of this thread.  Truly epic.  Definitely one of the highlights from their albums.  I once cried my eyes out to that solo (although at the time, I was tripping balls and had just had a bad breakup, so it may not have been just the solo  :P ).  But still, really fucking amazing solo.

As far as video game metal goes, the Dracula Battle Perfect Selections have some really bad-ass solos as well, especially Iron Blue Intention and Dance of Illusions.  I would love to play some Castlevania with those tracks as the BGM.   :metal :metal :metal

Adrian Smith.

I've never been wild about metal guitar solos taken as a whole. A lot of them don't really stick in my head. They can be good solos, but they won't necessarily stick with me, especially if they're fast and shreddy. Granted, there are exceptions. Marty Friedman occasionally turned out an excellent solo, as did, actually Kirk Hammett. Yeah, he gets lazy, but the One solo is pretty fantastic. Tony Iommi, obviously, played some quality guitar solos as well.

Obviously, if we're counting DT in here, Under A Glass Moon has a stellar solo, as do many other DT songs such as Breaking All Illusions. Including DT, my favorite metal solos would probably mostly be Petrucci, starting with UAGM, BAI and the solo after the F# in LTL.

But leaving DT and prog aside for the more straightfowardly-heavy metal artists, there really are only a handful of soloists who do it for me. I love the Iron Maiden guys for sure, and all three would rank among my favorite metal guitarists (sorry Dennis Stratton), especially Adrian Smith and Dave Murray (sorry Janick). I would name Janick's rendition of the Hallowed Be Thy Name solo (at its best) as one of his best solos, and for Dave Murray I would name Sign of the Cross as my favorite of his solos.

Adrian Smith, of course, is indisputably (/hyperbole) the best Iron Maiden guitarist and also the best guitarist in metal. Adrian Smith plays many excellent solos, but Stranger In a Strange Land is probably Adrian Smith's best solo. His two Seventh Son of a Seventh Son solos are also noteworthy, as, naturally, are many many other Adrian Smith solos.
And if spirit's a sign,
Then it's only a matter of time

Jerusalem
