Rewatched The Terminator for the first time a very long time. Holy crap, the soundtrack is awful.

Soundtrack or music score?

The score is a legendary classic of the 80s. I get that it sounds lo-if but given the context of the time and budget, it’s brilliant, and very memorable. Brad Fiedel is one of the more underrated movie composers and a genius on the synthesizer.

Score I guess. Just full on cheese-ball 80s synth stuff, which has always done nothing for me.

The move is great, yes!

Part of the greatness of The Terminator is that you can tell it was made on a pretty small budget, yet had high aspirations.  A couple shots in the factory towards the end, where she's being "chased" by a stop-motion endoskeleton obviously played on a screen in the background are genuinely cringeworthy.  I just chuckle and let it remind me that it was just a low-budget sci-fi movie at the time.  Bodybuilder guy as the "monster", a couple of relative unknowns for the leads.  No one expected it to become the iconic film that it is now.

The Farewell - Pretty good. Nice performance by the normally pretty obnoxious Akwafina (or however you spell it).

Arctic - For a movie with very little dialog, it drew me in very well. Nice visuals and performance by the lead actor.

I had never seen Observe & Report until this weekend. The good points: Anna Faris being hot as usual. The bad points: Young, clean-shaven Seth Rogen is not as funny as hairier Seth Rogen, and wtf @ the drunk sex scene, that was super uncomfortable.

Love me some Rogen films because when they're good they're really damn good (Pineapple Express is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen and never gets old) - but this was a miss.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

The very title made me curious so I googled and this seems like a movie right up my alley, will check it out.  :tup

Saw the new Lion King movie.

Gotta say.......very meh. I found myself enjoying the overall movie, but that's because it's just the same movie as the cartoon, which I loved.

As far as the voices go, the original is just so much better. Billie and Seth were great, as was John Oliver. Everyone else? Ranged from meh to worse.

Did not care for Donald Glover or Beyonce, and I love Donald Glover. Also Beyonce REALLY over sang everything and took me out of the movie. She was not a great decision outside of her pull at the BO.

As far as the tech goes, I still prefer the cartoon. Clearly this is a major achievement in animation, but it just didn't work for me. The lions have 0 emotional expression and it's just odd. Because they're talking and singing and stuff, it takes me out of the idea of seeing real animals. Instead, I'm just seeing a very new form of animation that doesn't deliver what the cartoon did.

Over all, eh. Cartoon is much better. This had good moments, and luckily the fact that it's 97% identical to the original, means I enjoy the story aspect, but most of the voice acting wasn't very interesting and the animation just didn't do it for me this time.

Agreed. It's clear that much of the cast was solely chosen for market value. "Can You Feel the Love" was actively ear-grating, and "Be Prepared" was such a massive disappointment.

Saw “The end of the Tour” yesterday with Jason Segel. Interesting character for sure. Here is my favorite quote from the movie.

Quote
Yes, you're performing muscular movements with your hand as you're jerking off. But what you're really doing, I think, is you're running a movie in your head. You're having a fantasy relationship with somebody who is not real... strictly to stimulate a neurological response. So as the Internet grows in the next 10, 15 years... and virtual reality pornography becomes a reality, we're gonna have to develop some real machinery inside our guts... to turn off pure, unalloyed pleasure. Or, I don't know about you, I'm gonna have to leave the planet. 'Cause the technology is just gonna get better and better. And it's gonna get easier and easier... and more and more convenient and more and more pleasurable... to sit alone with images on a screen... given to us by people who do not love us but want our money. And that's fine in low doses, but if it's the basic main staple of your diet, you're gonna die.

I finally saw The Shining.  Good film. I am not a big horror film guy, but it was good.  It always seems like Jack Nicholson is always playing Jack Nicholson, but he does it so well that it rarely bothers me. Shelley Duvall, however, was awful as the wife and not at all believable. The guy who played the song did a good job, I thought.

Agreed on Lion King. "Be Prepared" sucked!

Just did a late night Joaquin Phoenix double feature for the fuck of it. The Master was very well done but came to me super hyped up and didn't quite live up to it. I love PTA but definitely not my favorite of his.
You Were Never Really Here was awesome! I have a feeling I will watch it again, which is unusual. I'm digging up Lynne Ramsay's other movies, because We Need to Talk About Kevin was also amazing (though I'll probably never watch it again) so it's about time.
Oh Jackie, always jumping to the most homoerotic possibility.

Ace Ventura

Haven't seen it in a long time but still has some very funny moments.

I think the two times I laughed the hardest in a movie theater while watching a movie was during Ace Ventura Nature Calls when Ace escapes from the Rhino and during Borat when Borat and his friend have the naked fight in the hotel  :lol

You finally saw The Shining?? That's not at all believable.

I'm kind of with you on Shelley Duvall. A little. I thought Stanley Kubrick did an awesome job with this, especially the Danny riding his Big Wheel scenes.

I remember back in the day when I was into Stephen King that he mentioned he was never that thrilled with this adaptation.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

The Goldfinch

The book was great, the movie, not so much. It was simultaneously too long and too short. At 2 1/2 hours it felt slow at times and yet subplots felt like they were not explored enough. They should have killed one or two subplots from the book and streamlined the movie a bit. Kind of disappointing since the book was great, but that's usually how it goes I guess.

Rambo Last Blood. After reading some reviews I was expecting the worst, but enjoyed it quite a bit. Obviously not as great as First Blood, but I liked it more than the previous Rambo which was pretty good too.

I find it funny that this movie is getting 'reviewed' as if these critics are expecting the next Godfather or something. It's freaking Rambo  :lol   I think we all know what we're walking in to when we go to see a Rambo movie. Glad to hear it's fun and enjoyable.

Went to a special 35mm screening of Casino Thursday night. Such a great movie, and there was a very interesting Q&A with Nicholas Pileggi (who wrote the nonfiction books that Goodfellas and Casino were based on and the collaborated with Scoreses on the scripts) afterwards.

Oh man, I love that movie. That would be amazing to see on the big screen.

I just saw Ad Astra today.

It was mostly good. Well directed, well acted, great visuals. I think the two uhhhh brief side quests, for lack of a better word, were pretty lame and unnecessary, but a lot of it was really great. Though....I'm pretty sure space travel doesn't work that way.

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum

For some reason, I thought this was "the conclusion of the trilogy".  I have no idea where I got that.  Maybe because you usually make a trilogy.  This was the next chapter in the story, of course, but there's no conclusion.  We get to the end of this chapter and it kinda stops, and there's no question that the story continues.  Some stuff was concluded, some stuff changed, some stuff was clearly set up for the next chapter.

Along the way, more action, more guns, more dogs, more John Wick, more about this world he lives in and the culture and the hierarchy and how he apparently doesn't give a fuck about even the rules which govern this world he lives in.  Crazy, crazy ride.  I was laughing out loud multiple times just because it was so insane and over-the-top, yet perfect, that it kept blowing me away.  Holy shit.  Tons of fun.  So now we wait for Chapter 4.

5 armor-piercing bullets out of 5.  Would watch again, and laugh heartily.

The 'John Wick' franchise is nearly a perfect franchise. The world they've created still hasn't been fully revealed.....it's big action.....you will always root for John Wick....there is no shortage of fantastic actors that will and have been hired to be in the films.....it's just a home run.

Yes it's over the top and John Wick is seemingly superhuman but that is the fun of it. It's such a well done franchise.

I do have one minor problem with the current story.  It's not really a spoiler that John Wick has broken the rules and now there's an open contract on him.  So now every hitman out there is after him.  Sure, line 'em up.  Wick will just cut every one of them down, and that's what we'll spend the next two hours watching.  Good times.

Here's the problem.  This is John Wick, a fucking legend.  Literally everybody in his world knows who he is.  Is every single one of them stupid enough to go after him?  I mean, they know he'll have no choice but to kill them instead, right?  And since it's John Wick, the odds are really, really good that that's what'll happen.  I would think that many, possibly most, would go "John Wick?  Nah, I got some gigs lined up, no need to get my own ass killed."  We see 10-cent punks coming out of the woodwork to go after him.  How incredibly stupid are these people?

We were watching the first one the other night, and there's a scene where he's tearing through bad guys, and after a dozen or so, I notice that they're all wearing red shirts.  Oh come on!   :lol
