I was listening to Carly Simon - Nobody Does it Better (ie. the theme from The Spy Who Loved Me) when I clicked this thread and saw little Carlton dancing away. An interesting combo. :lol

I just watched The Man From the Future (2011), a Brazilian time travel movie. Its concept of time travel is kind of similar to Back to the Future, except much worse, and it tried to incorporate causality into a method that didn't really allow it, and just after they'd just had an iteration of the time line that specifically excluded it. Get your shit together! Also a very unlikely outcome of an international supermodel waiting 20 years to get together with her college crush of like 1 day. Um I don't think so.
But as a fluff movie, it was alright.

That is a great movie. I enjoyed it and told the concept pretty well. Also, bonus IQ song during the credits which was nice.

I loved Ren & Stimpy.

i loved the running gag of - at the start of every episode - they lived in a different house and it got increasingly more random and one house one week was up a ladder on the edge of a cliff...

Saw The Gift, what an awesome movie. The first half of the movie made me so uneasy with that crazy atmosphere and loved how the movie swayed you to a sense of dread and several emotions. What a crazy ride! Absolutely loved it.

Terra Formars (2016)

Starts off like Blade Runner (complete with knock-off spinner cars and neon cityscape), then turns into something more like Prometheus, and almost as bad too. It's set in the future, and it's about a bunch of people who are forced to go to a terraformed Mars to fight off a bunch of super-evolved cockroaches that basically look like muscley cockroach men for some reason. Also the people could shoot up insect DNA and turn into half insect fighters. From there the story got convoluted and I didn't know what was going on. It had some nice VFX, along with some not so good ones, but the movie was overall quite disappointing.

Terra ForMars sounds like a joke idea they had and made an actual film just based on that title.

They're terraforming a planet, and that planet is Mars. Terraformars. Wordplay. It's Japanese, so I wouldn't read too much into the English puns.

Pan's Labyrinth.
I'd been meaning to watch this for a while, but was a little put off by someone else's comments about the ratio of fantasy to war drama, and while I get that point, personally I felt the story was really strong in its own right, and holding back a bit on the fantasy element helped to highlight how bleak the reality was, and worked effectively for the story. I really enjoyed it.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite all time movies. Criterion is coming out with a special edition of it and I hope to grab it one day. I think this movie was Del Toro's life long dream and vision and it is a joy to watch every single time.

I can see why it would be one of your favourites. The characters and the story was all done very well. And it looked beautiful.

For tomorrow I have Downfall. Hopefully I'm not too distracted by that scene. :lol

Last night I was bored, so I watched the Justin Timberlake & the Tennessee Kids concert film on Netflix.

It was pretty good.  He is quite talented, and his band was smokin' good.

JT is a real throwback to the entertainers of the 40s, 50s, and 60s, that had to be able to act, sing, and dance, and everything else.  Very admirable.

The Green Mile (1999).

First time viewing for me, which is odd as I'm one of Stephen King's 'Constant Readers'.  It captured the spirit of the novel really well and was well acted all round, even at 3 hours it never felt like a slog.   Definately a top tier King adaption.

The Intern (2015)

Robert DeNiro as a 70-year-old guy who gets bored with being retired and gets a position as an intern working for Anne Hathaway, who founded and owns an Internet clothing site.  It was billed as a comedy, so I figured it we be full of bad "funny" scenes with DeNiro out of touch with modern business and how things are done today in general, but instead it was a character study with almost no humor at all.  If anything, it was a light drama.

And that's absolutely fine with me.  I'll watch any movie with DeNiro being badass and Anne being hot, so that's two reasons to watch the movie, as far as I'm concerned.  And they both were, so it was all good.  I liked how it was set up to make you think it's gonna go a certain way, but then it didn't.  DeNiro wasn't the awkward fish out of water; he was still badass in his own way.  He didn't know how to use Facebook or what a lot of the modern lingo is, but he had 40 years of business experience and basically ended up showing the younger guys he worked with how to be a real man, what it means to have a work ethic, how to actually think about other people and your job and your place in the world.

Not what I was expecting.  Better.  So of course people raked it because it wasn't very funny (it wasn't meant to be) DeNiro should have become the CEO (no, he didn't want that and neither did anyone else), there was one scene that was a bit out of place (but it was actually funny and was obviously meant to be out of place and break things up a bit), and they didn't like the ending.  You know what?  Those people are all idiots.  DeNiro didn't have the credentials to be the CEO that the investors wanted, the one "crazy" scene was great, and I liked that the ending was not a typical Hollywood ending.  This is the story they wanted to tell.  When we get to the end, we've been on a journey, everyone has grown and learned something, and there's a good indication of how things will go from here.  The ending was fine.  The movie was very good.

Spectre (2015)

I'd read a lot of the reviews and critiques of this movie, so I went into it with somewhat lowered expectations for a Bond movie, and that's probably a good thing.

Good:

Plenty of action scenes that keep things moving and are completely ridiculous but that's what James Bond movies are all about.  Chase scenes, car with plenty of built-in "custom features", and even a fun twist on all that.

Bond bags a couple of hot women and has a chance with another but has work to do.  Sorry, gotta go kill some people, maybe blow up a building or two.  Be right back.  Spoiler: He ends up having to fly a helicopter out of there before the cops show up, and she ends up with his hat.

Bad:

They tried to tie this back to all the previous Daniel Craig-era Bond movies, and mostly succeeded, but the failures were too obvious.  Too much retconning, too much Hollywood "but it turns out that (thing) was really just a part of (bigger thing)" and "(person) was really (someone else)".  If they'd done a better job of that (that is, if those earlier flicks were actually written to be tied together, not retconned to death) then that would've been cool.  Instead, it's a nice try, but no.

The big reveal.  A classic bad guy from Connery-era Bond is back!  Should've been huge; instead it's just a name drop.  Kinda like how in "Star Trek Into Darkness" we find out that Cumberbatch is really Khan and it's supposed to be "Holy shit, it's Khan!" but instead it's "Who? Is that name supposed to mean something?"

But whatever.  It was a Bond movie.  It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't up there with the better ones.  It seemed worse because you could see that it was trying hard to be more than what it was, but it failed pretty badly at that.  Maybe Bond movies are past their expiration date, as many have said.  At some point, by trying harder and harder to make them more and more exciting, cerebral, whatever, you just end up with a mess.  This is a an example of that.

I really enjoyed Spectre in the cinema but there's a lot of it that was like "huh" ??

Like the torture scene... if I inject you with this - you will not recognise faces....

But then that just ends there and nothing comes of it...

It's much better than Quantum Of Solace but not as good as Casino Royale.

Probably just below Skyfall too.

The Wicker Man.

The good one, the 1973 one. It was spoiled by Iron Maiden and Christopher Lee had an horribly dated hairstyle, but it was good and filled with wonderful songs and pagan references. Now I can see what a gigantic mistake was to see the travesty that was the 2006 one with Nicholas Cage before this.

In a time where "twists" were not all the rage like it is now, I believe the one of the movie must have come as a shock. And seeing the wicker man for the first time... that must have been horrific and awesome at the same time!

Brian de Palma's The black Dahlia

Felt like a 3 hour movie, despite being only 2. Was supposed to have a noir vibe, but was anything but that. Should have been compelling, but felt pretty flat. And I actually laughed out loud at the ending. I can not recommend this movie.

Saturday was Dismember the Alamo! I know I've posted about it in previous years but the Alamo Drafthouse shows four horror movies in one program, but you don't know what they are ahead of time, which makes it even more fun.

First one was Carnage or A Bay of Blood, fun Italian slasher flick from the seventies. Very seventies. Enjoyed it.

Next was Train to Busan, a fucking brilliant Korean zombie flick that I'm still thinking about.  So well done and highly recommended. It's new but no idea what kind of release it will get. Here is the trailer: https://youtu.be/pyWuHv2-Abk

Third was Angel Heart with Mickey Rourke (and of course De Niro!). I had heard of this one but never seen it- so good! More like a noir with horror thrown in, which I like.

Last was Society, which I just recently saw for the first time and was pumped to see on the big screen/in 35mm. Eighties cheese fest (Brian Yuzna!) with lots of social/class commentary and one of the grossest endings ever :lol

A total blast, and I won a bottle of wine for participating in a game. This is now a Halloween tradition!

I had mixed feelings about it. I was looking forward to seeing it for DeNiro and Anne Hathaway but I didn't find it as funny as I hoped it would be.

It definitely wasn't very funny, but it was just a very.........nice movie. I dunno, I really liked it. But it was a modern Deniro movie, so I expected to hate it. Maybe that helped.

Also I got Creed in the mail from Netflix, earlier than I thought I would, so I am having to marathon all 6 Rocky movies before I watch it.

So far I've seen I, II and III. All really good! Way better than I expected.

One is clearly the best. Just a fantastic movie. Two is also pretty good but tried to carry more weight than it had the ability to and three realized what it could do and did it very well.

I've heard IV and V are just terrible, so that should be fun.
