Finally watched the Patriot. Pretty good war film. Mel Gibson was such a great actor.

He really was.  He never got his due back then, and never will now, which is his own fault for being such a racist, alcoholic nut job.  Many actors cannot do both drama and comedy well, but Gibson could, and often at the same time.

Mel's an interesting dude. He really is a fantastic actor, and you're right, he screwed his career.

I know he's done a bunch of those weird takenesque movies in the last few years, but I just can't bring myself to watch any, not my genre. So I've largely given up on enjoying Mel Gibson in a new acting role.

However, he's a god damn amazing director. I don't even care about Passion, and I am a huge fan of his style. I am excited about Hacksaw Ridge and I hope he keeps directing, though I'll probably skip the Resurrection movie.

I'm not a religious guy, but I love Passion of the Christ. I really admire the commitment he has as a director.

Yeah, definitely looking forward to Hacksaw Ridge.

Mel is a hit-or-miss actor for me, but I've always found him to be a gifted director.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Yep, he is a great director.  He often does a great job of building suspense in a methodical manner in a single scene.  To wit:

The 1990 Night of the dead remake directed by tom savini.

Back the early 90's this was my very first introduction to the Dead series and I actually like it quite a bit. Sure its not as good as the original, but at this point I've seen the original so many damn times, its nice to have a different version to watch.

Creed.

As part of the Rocky universe it continued the tradition of boxers just thumping each other over and over for 12 rounds - but aside from a rather cliched plot (and sub plots) it was actually pretty fun, the boxing was shot really well and Wallace from The Wire made a likable lead.

As much as I love James Cameron's movies - Alien is so much better.

Hard for me to compare.  They are basically two different kinds of movie (Alien is a horror film, and Aliens is an action film), and both are outstanding for what they are.

But that's just me.

Totally agree. I love both, but for such different reasons that it's basically impossible for me to choose one over the other.

AVPR is actually a slight improvement over AVP, but that's only because it ups the action/gore quota.  The story is just as horrible.

I don't know, I think I liked the antarctic pyramid mystery of AvP more than the teenage B-movie slasher of AvPR.

Controversial movie opinion - I don't like the Alien movies, nor did I really care for the Terminator movies. I'll take True Lies over all of them.

True Lies is awesome, but so is Terminator 2. Never cared for the Alien franchise myself. I generally despise scifi horror.

I was very disappointed when they wound up not making a second True Lies movie.

SciFi horror? You mean like The Blob?  :neverusethis:

True Lies is a gem.  As far as Terminator goes, I'll take part 1 over part 2 any day.

Sticking with Sci-Fi and Ridley Scott, what is the opinion of Blade Runner part 2.  It might have been discussed, but I missed it.  As far as Blade Runner goes, that would be my all time favorite movie.  Just an epic movie experience IMO and I can watch it over and over again.  Thats why I'm slightly worried about a sequel tarnishing things a bit.  But I'm sure it will be solid film, but its impossible to surpass the original.

Ridley isn't directing Blade Runner 2.

And I'm not a fan of the original. It's seminal but I find it quite boring actually.

Blade Runner is painfully slow. But it's one of the most visually arresting sci-fi movies ever.

Blade Runner moves slowly, so I can see why some people don't like it, but it's not just sci-fi, it's also a detective/mystery story.  It unfolds, it gives a lot to think about, and it doesn't rush things or throw in explosions or action just to up to excitement quota.  I like it just the way it is.
