Soap was the first show I watched regularly as a kid, and I'll still throw it on from time to time. I thought Burt's best moment was towards the end when he went to his childhood pastor seeking guidance while his life fell apart, only to have the elderly pastor die while he's explaining it.

Soap was an amazing show, and Richard Mulligan was a big part of that.  It was absurd, and meant to be, but the actors had real chops and could bring surprising depth and gravitas, just once in a while, to the most crazy situations.  Invisible Burt is a great example.  Another fave of mine was when he had an alien doppleganger or something (it's been a long time) who's going to replace him and basically steal his life, and the real Burt talks him out of it.  He appeals to Fake Burt's conscience, how he (Real Burt) has already done the hard part, built his life, raised some decent kids, and it's not fair that Fake Burt can just come in and get to reap the rewards, live out the golden years that Real Burt has worked hard to earn.

I watched that scene earlier when Chris brought it up. Here it is, along with the preceding scene of Burt confusing the hell out of Jodie. Billy Crystal and Mulligan really bring it home here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8laJD6yZS8w

So in November, 1979, it looks like alien Burt pulls an iPhone out of his pocket to get beamed back up.

I noticed that!  I laughed because it really did look like an iPhone.  Presumably it was inspired by the Star Trek communicator or similar device we'd seen in sci-fi.

The Platform

The first vibes I was getting were of the movie Cube, but this one is so much different. People wake up in this Prison esque facility and they are on a certain level. A full platform of food starts at the top and makes its way down through each level. People can eat as much as they want or take only what they need and save some for the people below them.

Its an intriguing premise, but I didn't really enjoy the movie. Its also on netflix if anyone is interested.

Quantum of Solace. (Was on TV)

I think this is far and away the most underrated Bond movie ever.

It’s just stylish as hell- the Opera scene, the mysterious Quantum group, the serious tone, the locales, the girls, Daniel Craig’s performance. I admit it has some slow points and I see why people disliked it coming off of the now classic Casino Royale, but I prefer this over scarred bad guys living in Ice Castles with giant ray guns any day. I’m kind of sad they decided to move away from this type of realism in Skyfall (overrated), and Spectre (dreadful).

It’s not the best- it’s not Goldfinger or even Goldeneye, but a lot of people rank it as one of the worst and I think that’s totally undeserved. Bond fans should give it another chance.

I'll take Quantum over SPECTRE any day. Sure, its pretty dumb but I am always entertained. My main complaint is that the main villain greene was very weak. He just completely pales in comparison to the likes of le chiffre or silva.

Long story but I dozed off in the theater seeing Quantum. 2nd time in my life that has happened. Been meaning to revisit as I like the Craig films, but never have. Did not know, however, Casino Royale was now a 'classic.'

The problems with Quantum are...

- It was made during a writers strike, meaning dialog was written on set in the day - sometimes by Craig himself......And it shows.

- Its directed by a director who had never done an action movie before, he goes for the fast cuts popular at the time (think Bourne).  But totally gets it wrong, the action in this movie is an incomprehensible mess.

- Dominic Green is the most forgettable villain in the series.

- There is no fun in this movie.

I genuinely think it's the least enjoyable Bond film to watch.  Others maybe stupidier or have massive plot issues but you can normally find some enjoyment within them.

I didn’t really notice. The fact that it’s not 75% innuendo or one-liners like the late Brosnan era, I am a-ok with it.

Also didn’t really feel that way. The Opera and ensuing chase/fight/shootout is incredibly well shot and super creative in my opinion. The assassin chase is fun, although kind of a lesser version of the one in Casino Royale. The ending fight with Green is...not great...but I wouldn’t call it a “incomprehensible mess”.

- Dominic Green is the most forgettable villain in the series.

I’ll give you that, he’s not memorable, but I think that’s also intentional with the serious tone of the film. Also Quantum group was interesting, and I always thought it would be building to up to something bigger like a modernized Spectre with a super evil villain leader which would have been revealed in the next installment. They kind of went that direction, but kind of didn’t, it all just got really convoluted in the sequels unfortunately and obviously I was unhappy (like everyone else) of where it all ended up.

- There is no fun in this movie.

I agree in the sense that it’s long, probably needs one more large action set piece, a gadget and bad guy with a hook for a hand or something but I just like the serious tone of the movie. It’s like what they were trying to do with the Timothy Dalton films but did it better IMO. I get why people dislike it, though. I also welcomed the change of pace because I was still reeling from Die Another Day which I consider to be not only the worst Bond film but one of the worst films ever made period. But what do I know? I wasn’t a fan of Skyfall, so I admit have odd taste, apparently.

Totally agree. Quantum may have its issues, but it aint no Die another day  :P  Die another day is the Batman and Robin of the bond franchise. Super corny, beyond ludicrous and campy. That's really the only I can't sit through.

I also am not that into Skyfall. Don't really know why, just doesn't really do it for me.

Galaxy Quest is easily my favorite "Star Trek or related" movie. :)

I bought it on DVD one time, came home, opened it up and watched it, then when I went to put it in my DVD rack, I saw that I already had a copy.  Oops.

Saw I Am Legend for the first time.

Yup, this one passed under my radar. I figured, given the current state of the world, "why not", and I immediately regretted it seeing scenes of an empty cities.... movies about a dictatorship are best viewed when there's a democracy, if you know what I mean  :D

It was ok, turns ut that I eventually watched the director's cut, the one where.... 13 years old spoilers I guess? ... he doesn't die, and I was surprised when the movie ended 'cause I remember, from back in the day, about reading that he died at the end - then I read about it and learnt of the two different endings. Uh well.

Doubling down on that.... I finally completed my "journey" and I've seen The Godfather III.

Random thoughts...

- Took a while to get adjusted to the protagonist; in the two other movies I was seeing Michael Corleone, in the third I was seeing Al Pacino, if you get what I mean. When he was young, he was different enough to pretend that "Michael Corleone" was "real", but by 1990 Pacino already had the looks that I was more than familiar with (we're talking about one of the most famous actors ever after all)  so it took a while to go past the idea of seeing another Al Pacino movie rather than thinking "wow, look how Michael Corleone aged". I perfectly know how he aged, I've see him in countless movies.
- Having not lived the real time gap between the two original movies and the last one, it didn't seem too much disconneted or different from the previous ones. Didn't get "meh, is this even a Godfather movie?" feeling at all.
- After all, they've kept some beats from the other two movies, mainly the protagonist being smart enough to figure out who's the real puppet master behind a life attempt, and the final montage with the bad guys being killed one by one.
- The Pope sublot was weird. That was one the little things I knew about the movie, that it tied in with the Pope / italian political climate of the end of the 70's. In the second movie, they've adapted an historical background to their protagonists, the Cuban revolution - after seeing the movie I went and checked and yes, it was real, the Cuban dictator really fled the country on that New Years' Eve. Here instead they've kept the name of the popes (Paul VI and John Paul I), they even kept the looks (bald, mustache) of a banker that was found hung under a London bridge, but they've changed the names and the years in which the events happened.
Also, from knowing as little as "the movie ties in with the conspiracy theories about the sudden death of John Paul I", I expected that it would have been the Corleone gang to kill the Pope, something as in "the Pope is an obstacle, but what can you do? you can't get the Pope" / "We can get ANYONE", this kind of thing. Would have been daring and ballsy to do. But it all turned out a conspiracy of the bad guys to which an older and weaker Michael Corleone couldn't react.
- Speaking of the Corleone name, took me a while to figure out that the "surname" wasn't a cheap pick, as in "how do I name my villain? mh, let's just use the name of a town as a surname", but that it had an explanation (the immigrant office labelling Vito Andolini from Corleone as "Vito Corleone"), and the moment Michael suggested Andy Garcia to call himself Vincenzo Corleone, it kinda felt like a Sith title, where everyone call themselves Darth  :lol "the Mafia is strong with you.... a powerful boss you will become. Henceforth, you shall be known as Vincenzo..... Corleone"
- Didn't really have particular problems with Sofia Coppola, but I found it weird that she would bang her cousin.... hello, incest anyone?
- Also totally didn't see coming the "red wedding", or better the "helicopter dinner". Savage. And the killing of John Zasa was a callback to young Vito Corleone killing Fanucci (or whatever was the name of the guy dressed in white) during a procession.

All in all it was enjoyable, A nice conclusion to a saga, even though a bit underwhelming.... in the end Michael dies old, forgotten and alone, his attempts to protect his family all futile. He must have left it all in the hands of Andy Garcia and spent another 10-15 years sitting alone in his home wallowing in regret and sorrow.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.  I agree with you (and others) about how Al Pacino had changed so much over the years that it was hard to see Michael Corleone on the screen, at least a little bit, and I did live through the years, and watched Al Pacino slowly mutate into the raging old man that he is now.  When I watch the first two, I see Michael Corleone and I always will.  I was 10 years old and didn't know many actors by name, only by role.  When I watch Part III, I see him now, but it took a while.  Same with Kay Adams.  I thought Kay Adams was cute.  In Part III, it's still her, but now she's older and looks like Diane Keaton, which is distracting.  But when they're on screen together and talking, and arguing, it's Michael and Kay again.

I tell you, I won't live in a town that robs men of the right to marry their cousins!

Yeah, it was definitely hard seeing Michael instead of Col. Frank Slade. I didn't have that problem with Kay, though. My biggest problem was that the whole Vatican thing was a little too convoluted, and I didn't find it interesting enough to really pull me in.

I actually enjoyed that part, but prior to my seeing the film I knew a bit about that conspiracy theory, if you want to call it that, surrounding John Paul I, the Vatican Bank, and all that. So that background might have helped me follow the story better that I would have otherwise.

My mom loves the films but will go to her grave criticizing Sofia. I never really got the criticism. I had read all about it before seeing the film, and during her scenes I had a bit of a "what's the big deal I am missing?" thought going through my head.

Sofia worked for me because her character was young, naive, and let's face it, not the brightest bulb in the box.  So her having kinduv confused, bewildered face all the time ("I'm in love with my cousin, Dad, what's the problem?") made sense.  Supposedly Bridget Fonda also auditioned for the role of Mary, and I think some people were looking for things to find wrong with Sofia, not least because she's a Coppola.  Bridget is probably the better actress, but she wouldn't have looked right for the part.  Kay's daughter, sure, but not Michael's daughter.

I've read that Winona Ryder was meant to play Sofia, but she got a breakdown or something and dropped out at the eleventh hour. Probably Coppola wanted to make up for not having her and that's why 2 years later he cast her as a magnificent Mina in Dracula.

I was not expecting it to be as raunchy as it was.

And I really was not expecting to see that much of Margot Robbie.  I am not sure any woman has ever looked as good in a movie as she did in that one. Holy shitballs. :heart :heart :heart

Wasn't all of Sofia's dialogue overdubbed? My recollection was that there was a disconnect between voice and expression that was, eh, odd.

I watched Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion with my 16yo daughter this past weekend.  The movie obviously has no nostalgia value for her, and some of the references didn't register with her, but she enjoyed it.  I always find it funny.

Blade Runner, the 2007 "Final Cut" version.  I've read the book something like 10 times (it's one of those books, like The Bourne Identity, where if I'm bored for a day, or I have a quick overnight trip, I'll grab and burn through), but haven't seen the movie for decades, and I was... disappointed, to say the least.   The movie is beautifully shot, and the soundtrack is amazing; it's really immersive in that way.  But there were little notes that I was expecting to be hit from the book and they weren't.   That's on me, of course, but while I didn't want/need it to follow the book exactly, there were certain things I wished were there.

I also didn't care for some of the... "over-acting".  The characters in the book were more matter-of-fact, more hard-boiled, more resigned to their fates in a way.  I think the retirement of Pris and the two Baty's took all of about two pages, with no "climactic fight scene", no "Here's JOHNNY!" moment where Rutger Hauer bangs his head through the wall, no "spike through the hand", no death soliloquy; that conveyed the bleakness far more than rainy alley ways.

By the way, though, I finished Deus Ex on xBox a couple months ago, and I was blown away how influenced by the movie that was.  Some of the city settings in the game were taken almost literally from the film.

Men In Black International. Had very low expectations and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Good chem between Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson.
