A co-worker of mine is a fan of the old-time monster movies, and he saw The Shape of Water, and wondered why more people haven't pointed out that it's basically a remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon, or maybe one of its sequels.  He and his girlfriend both noticed it.  He said that there's a few scenes that straight-up copies from the original.

I said Wait, you mean there was a female scientist on the team who developed a... "relationship"... with The Creature?  He said Yeah, and some of the scenes were blocked the same way.  No question it's basically a remake.  I have no idea.

I have seen the original movie... inspired from? yes, and Del Toro is the first to say it. Remake? no way.

I also watched The Shape of Water yesterday. Very good movie, but well, that's all it is. I knew it would win the Oscar because everything on that movie screams "OSCAR GRAB". I couldn't help noticing similarities to other movies, specially Amelie Poulain and Delicatessen. The French director of those movies even accused Guillermo Del Toro of copying a scene (which I don't think it was copied), but the similarities are there anyway.

I don't think it was the best movie of the year, but it was kind of obvious it would win. It was like the movie was written for the Oscars. But even worse was seeing "Get Out" getting Oscars. That movie is

I still have to watch Phantom Thread.

Aside from the scene in the movie theater, I have no idea how Shape of Water was simply made to get Oscars.

If anything, I'd give that to Darkest Hour.

I'd tend to agree. Big war movie with poignant scenes vs mute girl having sex with a monster? I'd consider the former more Oscar-friendly.

Yea, historic movie with big named actor doing very big loud performance with a feel good theme? Oscars.

Movie with a mute girl banging a fish man? Surprising win.

I've never understood how a movie can even be said to be an "Oscar Grab".  If you're making a serious movie, you're making the best movie you can, so what specifically are we talking about that makes it an "Oscar Grab" movie?  Is there a hidden list of criteria which the academy looks for, and only gives awards to movies meeting those criteria?

Okay Adami posted this while I was typing my reply:

But still, big-named actors make movies.  Historic movies happen.  Is simply making such a movie considered fishing for Oscars?

Sounds ridiculously cynical, and that's coming from a cynic.

Suppose someone had the idea to make a movie about some historical event that he really thinks is a story that needs to be told.  If he's a reasonably well-connected director/producer, he'll certainly be able to get some top-name stars to be in the movie.  There is Zero chance that he can make this movie without people crying "Oscar Bait!"

To me, Oscar Bait sounds like specifically making a movie in order to grab Oscars.  He couldn't, you know, just want to make a movie, right?

Well, we could turn this around also to music. Someone may mistake a truly genuine and coming-from-the-heart song that has success as a song written specifically to reach the top of the charts. Sometimes it's true, some other times it just happen to be a great song that everyone loves. Heck, Judas Priest wrote You've Got Another Thing Coming as a literal filler since the album was too short, and it became their biggest US hit.

I liked 'The Shape of Water', but I liked six of the other nominated films more, so I'm a bit disappointed that it won.

The professional

I have to give such utter praise and worship to Gary oldman in this film. Mother of god, its so captivating. This is definitely my favorite performance by him and its ironic that he ended up being commissioner Gordan, because hot damn he could have been an awesome joker.

Saw Red Sparrow last night. It was OK. It felt like it could have been a lot better, but I can't quite put my finger on what was wrong with it to make it just OK.

How was Jennifer Lawrence's Russian accent? Was it any better than what was in the trailers? I hope it was, because it was a bit rough in the trailer. I'm a big fan of hers but man, from the trailers it seemed like she was butchering that accent.

The accents were pretty mediocre all around I thought. Lawrence's seemed to come and go at times. Jeremy Irons hardly seemed to be trying to have a Russian accent.

Watched the Sound City documentary, about the legendary L.A recording studio.

It was pretty good! It was fun seeing Dave Grohl "rescue" the Neve mixing board into his own studio. The jam sessions with Paul McCarthy were also nice.

Ghostbusters remake.  It was funny and had plenty of cute nods to the original, but it felt like it had to resort to more slapstick comedy (i.e. shoehorning Bridesmaids into a classic franchise), rather than just having incredibly witty dialogue like the original did.

I had no problem with the all-female led cast, loved the cameos of prior cast members (and ghosts!) and the CGI was pretty awesome.

Hey, we watched Thor Ragnorok on Saturday night, too!  Coincidence?  Yeah, probably.

Good fun, but I kinda hate the trope of the long-lost sibling who no one's ever heard of before suddenly appearing as causing problems.  Once I got past that, it was good.

Hilarious cameo by Matt Damon as "Loki" in the cheesy play at the beginning.  Matt Damon played the Archangel Loki in Dogma.

Moonlight. I might have to revisit this movie, because of how character driven and not plot or story focussed it is. I was really bored when watching it but after a few days I thought to myself these are the exact type of movies I wish to be watching rather than only blockbuster type of movies.

Moonlight never really impressed me. It wasn't bad, but it just didn't feel like anything as extraordinary as most others seemed to think it was.

Steven Kings "Rose Red".  A long 4hr movie originally a mini-series in 2002. It draws you in well and has plenty of room for character development. It's like a book made into a movie, but there was no book written prior to it. The acting is very good by the whole cast, Nancy Travis knocks it out of the park in this movie.

No, completely unrelated..    It's more loosely based on the Story behind the Winchester Mansion in San Jose California, supposedly Haunted with a long history. Rose Red was filmed in Seattle and the location was at the Thornewood Castle near Tacoma/Lakewood. If you ever have four hours to kill, this movie delivers and is very well cast.. One of the better Steven King movies imo..

Well, given that it was just released on BR/DVD last week, it probably actually isn't a coincidence at all.  :lol

Finally saw Inception this last Friday because my 14-year-old is doing a project for film class, and there were things he felt like he missed seeing it in class that he wanted to dig a little deeper into.  It was decent.  But based on all the hype I've heard through the years, I was actually a bit let down.

But based on all the hype I've heard through the years, I was actually a bit let down.

I've found that to be true with a few movies I was late to the party on. 'Something About Mary' was one of them....'The English Patient' another.....sometimes if there's too long between the movie coming out and you seeing it the hype and adulation may have a negative impact.
