The 'Mission: Impossible' Series
« on: March 22, 2015, 10:53:07 AM »
Trailer for the trailer (but basically just a trailer) for the next movie; Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation just dropped.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNPZGc0WmfM

I'm actually excited for this. I enjoyed Ghost Protocol, I enjoy the original, and I think MI3 is awesome. The second movie was a bit weird, and not at all as good as the others, but it was still an okay movie.

And because this is DTF, rankings!

01 - Mission: Impossible III
02 - Mission: Impossible
03 - Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
04 - Mission: Impossible II

Love that trailer!

I like all of the previous films to varying degree, with #2 clearly the least of them.

Rankings?  OK

MI: Ghost Protocol
MI
MI III
MI II

I'm a big fan of the series, but the movies never did much for me. The first one was pretty good if you don't mind Jim Phelps being the bad guy, but they were all too action oriented.

Yeah, Ghost Protocol was really good. I was pleasantly surprised.

Definitely going to check out Rogue Nation when it hits the cinemas.

Yeah, this one looks like it could be one of the best yet. I don't know if it'll beat 3 for me, so I won't hold this movie to that standard, but it looks great.

Ghost Protocol and III are the best, the first is also great but mainly for nostalgic reasons. II is really lame. V looks to be great. :)

II was simply awful.  Up there with Transformers II as far as terrible #2 movie in a franchise.  III redeemed themselves nicely, no thanks to Seymour-Hoffman.  Ghost Protocol was terrific.

Ranking:
I
III
GP

Really looking forward to Rogue Nation.  Jingle.son and I are gonna catchup on the first three over the next couple of weeks.

I think Hoffman was awesome in III. Easily the best villain this series has had so far.

Just got back from seeing Rogue Nation. Not bad at all! The villain was pretty great, though not quite as good as PSH in III.

I don't think any villain will top PSH's performance.  Rogue Nation was a good movie, kinda long, and the only annoying thing is how invincible Hunt is.  Seriously, after rolling a Beamer end over end 4-5 times, then ditching your motorbike at what... 80+mph, he should've been in intensive care.

Ha. I was wearing jackets and a helmet and boots and gloves and I fell off my bike at like 10 mph and it hurt my arm really bad.

No protection at all at 80 and yep - he'd be inside out  over the road.

Moreover, that was all just minutes after he drowned and had to be revived. It was insane.

But yeah, your general assessment of the film is pretty spot-on. It was fun, but long and Ethan was a bit too invincible for my liking.

Saw it last night, and liked it. I didn't love it though because there were a bit too many dumb monents that really took me out of it. But there were several scenes that were just great. Fun to hear swedish again in yet another MI movie, although the swedish lines were a bit awkwardly acted to a swede.

There was a lot of tension in this movie too, probably more than I thought Ghost Protocol had. It might be the most tense MI movie yet.

I think I like this one more than GP, but below III and I.

I wonder if they'll ever re-cast Ethan Hunt and try to do a Bond like franchise ?

Either that, or go the Bourne route, and just new agents.  I'm sure this franchise will survive the loss of Cruise.

No doubt... Paul Walker died and Hollywood still made Furious 7 and 8. :dunno:.

The day Tom Cruise says no to more Mission movies - that'll be the same day that they annouce a full reboot of the series with all new cast and crew etc.

Probably fuck it all up and cast the action star du jour.

How in the hell is this the only M:I thread I can find, and how in the hell has it been 7 years since it was posted in??  Was there never any discussion around Fallout?!?  Well whatever ...

For as much flack as Scientologist Tom Cruise gets, the guy is Final Boss Level committed to his craft.  This was an outstanding behind the scenes segment to watch.

Very much looking forward to this next summer.

I'd have sworn there was a bunch of discussion when Dead Reckoning was announced.  Not sure if it was a dedicated thread, though.

Unfortunately, your video link wouldn't open (office security, I assume).

My ranking of the movies:

MI:  The original still takes the top spot for me, but the margin is super slim and probably only because of nostalgia.

Ghost Protocol:  Absolutely my favorite of the new batch.  Only thing I didn't like was the fight scene in the parking garage where both guys acted like Terminators.

Rogue Nation (i.e., "The One with the Bass Flute"):  Really like Rebecca Ferguson.

Fallout:  Solid but not great.

III:  This is a bit of a placeholder because I have almost no recollection of this one.  Need to rewatch.

II:  One of the biggest letdowns in the history of movies.  Absolutely awful direction.

Love part one 100% and its an awesome time capsule for 96

Part 2 I know is the black sheep, but I enjoy it as a guilty pleasure

Part 3 I like a lot, but never watch it and after that I pretty much checked out of the series.

III was great...that was the one with Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the villain.  I'd put it ahead of Ghost Protocol.
