Nobody has done a roulette with concept albums or EPs recently. I may have to cook one up to remedy that. :corn
Not sure how I'll find the time but obviously I'll have no choice but to play! :lol
I know, that's how I feel every time I join a new roulette. Somehow I make it work though  :lol

Here's what I was thinking. 4 or 5 rounds, 3-4 EP rounds, then a final Concept album round. No banned list outside of a few very obvious bands (think like Dream Theater, Rush, Marillion, etc etc), this is going to be more about putting together coherent stories that flow well and I'd want to give everyone as many option as possible. I'm not sure I'm going to put theme restrictions on the rounds, like I said giving people more options to make something great, use your imagination. Plus, my last roulette was Rush themed and some of you still struggled with that :dunno: So themes will probably be out.

Anyway, thoughts?

Does it?

I'm actually working on it. I need to come up with the finalized format and the banned list (which again, will be very small). I want this to be more about having fun, seeing the creativity of the participants, and perhaps seeing some familiar songs in a new light/in a new context. Plus I was hoping to get a better grasp on the interest in the format from the forum, but there's only been a few of you that have said anything so far. No matter, if the participants list is small that's OK too.

Well, I had themes in my EP Roulette. And my final EP round turned into basically a concept album round. :lol
I think Chad's was about 3 hours long. :lol

That was a fun roulette! :metal I'll try to live up to that standard  :) :corn

Yeah, I made a double album as my final submission  :lol.  I still have those playlists (since I made an "abridged" version of that 'album') on Spotify, and was just looking at them after seeing Puppers last post (btw, it was 2h4m - the shorter version was 1h13m).  Not all the songs were great, but were needed for the story.

Just looked at the OP, it seems like a shit ton of work that I just don't have the energy for. Gonna pass on that one.

That's fine, and I get it. Like I said in my OP, I understand if people don't have the time to devote to it.

My next roulette will probably be much simpler. We just haven't had one with EPs and such for a long while.

I think I'd like to run a (song) roulette again soon. As it seems we're still in the situation of having more demand to participate in roulettes than to run them, I think I have an idea to accommodate a fairly large number of participants.

I thought we went down to two because the demand to run one was pretty low. But in any case, I'll try to have a thread up sometime this weekend.

I don't know if this is supposed to be the right place to do this, but I'm in the planning stages of my own first roulette.  I don't know when would be a good time for it, and how spread thin people could potentially be.  I'm in 425's, which I estimate is probably going to run for another couple months at least.  Deadeye21's seems like it's a bit closer to completion.  Puppies' is currently on hiatus, but I suppose could restart at any point.

I'm probably at minimum still a few weeks out from even considering starting, because I'd need to iron out more details, do a more detailed initial writeup and such.  The basic idea would be a bit of reciprocity.  I'd have maybe three cycles, where I'd have two rounds where for each I would link a song representing a facet of my taste, and people would use that as a guideline for their own submissions.  Then the third would be more of a free for all grab-bag.  I'd probably not reveal the "topic" song for each round until the start of it, so there'd be some anticipation and excitement both ways.  Perhaps two more cycles of this, some eliminations, and something different for the last few rounds, I might have to look at some older roulettes, but it seems that custom EPs or whole albums are common, so I might consider those and/or something else.

I haven't really paid attention to roulettes until just the last month or two, so I don't know what a typical amount to have at once is.  If we're on the lower end, I could consider starting sooner, if we're tapped out, I can wait 'til one or more complete.  I don't know if there's already a queue of people considering running them next either.  So I'm open to ideas, suggestions, and to gauge interest in my idea.

usually we would run at most 3 at once

i think technically we're doing that right now but with puppies' on hiatus who knows, but the other two are still gonna run for a while longer, i imagine

I don't normally count roulettes on hiatus as one of the three so I'd say whenever you are ready and willing to start, go for it.

Looks like Puppies' is back up, so unless something else goes on hiatus for awhile, I'm aiming to start whenever the next one finishes, which I'm guessing will be Deadeye21's.

I'm actually thinking of having two songs to represent the theme of each round.  That would give me twelve total songs I'd be having everyone listen to, and might give a bit broader range of possibilities to spin off from (plus more music I want people to hear!, I've already picked them out unless something else even better comes to mind in the next few weeks or however long it takes).  I want to do even more, since even as it is I've had to consolidate categories a bit, but that would probably go beyond a dozen rounds, and even if I can be pretty timely it might be a bit excessive, so that seems like it might be a more workable number.

That's one thing I've been struggling with, actually.  I don't want to artificially limit participation too much.  I came up with a very lengthy list at first that would probably appear intimidating and turn people away.  It was based on artists I've given 4.5 or 5.0 ratings to albums from on my Rate Your Music account.  Which is quite a lot.  But even then, there are tons of individual songs I know from artists I haven't rated higher than 4.0.  I'd prefer people send music I haven't rated yet, but if someone has a more compact library they'd still certainly be welcome to participate, and could send music maybe I've already heard, but am not deeply familiar with.  But even as much music as I've heard, it's hard to imagine that pretty much everyone wouldn't have a solid set of artists I don't really have an opinion on yet.

So I'm wondering if the easiest thing might be just to link my RYM account, and people can enter their artists into the search box to see if I've rated the album.  The higher the rating, the more likely I'm already familiar with the material.  4.5-5.0 probably means I already love it, so there's no point in sending it.  3.0 and below means something about it didn't work for me.  3.5 and 4.0 is risky, there could be gold I overlooked and a few concentrated listens might bring it out, or maybe that rating is there because there's a ceiling to my level of appreciation for the artist and I might like but not necessarily love them.  And obviously artists I haven't rated is wide open.  If need be, people could PM about specific artists/albums/songs, perhaps.  And I might just need to ask people to resubmit if they send something I already know too well.
