So... anyone thinking about doing a roulette?  :corn

I'm still thinking about firing one up, but I'm contemplating how I want to do it. I kind of want to filter out standard prog metal stuff, but I don't know that I want to go full lead-free and refuse metal entirely. Maybe I'll just score prog submissions really viciously to discourage sending them? Dunno. Thinking.

I'd like to run one, but I think it'll have limited appeal.  I want to run a ProgPower USA 2021 lineup roulette. I often have good intentions of listening to all the bands before the event, but I never do.  This roulette would help change that, and maybe it would give fellow ProgPower attendees a better idea about some of the bands and what their fans on this forum like best.  But of course, you don't have to plan on going to ProgPower to play.  Buddyhunter could send me stuff from one of the greatest concept albums of all time, for example.

So, how to do it.  Obviously, bands can be used more than once since there are only so many to choose from, but I can't have people wait to see what scores well in round 1 and then everyone just sends those bands.  Maybe everyone pre-sends for the whole thing?  And if a band hasn't been used or has scored poorly, someone could switch their choice to use that band.  But they can't switch to use one that has scored well.  Maybe if a band hasn't been sent by a certain time, I offer a bonus point for someone to switch their submission.

Would anyone be interested and if so, any thoughts about how it would work?

I think limiting yourself to 'just' artists that will play ProgPower is not really going to work, because chances are multiple participants won't have heard of certain bands. Honestly, coming from someone who has visited ProgPower Europe 10 times, I had the most fun discovering the bands at the event, but even still, it's not that much effort to just listen to each band's latest record. I don't think you'll need a roulette for that.

That said, do run one :)

I agree as well, although of course there are ways you could theme a roulette around ProgPower without limiting it to such a small number of artists. For example, you could restrict it to the sorts of prog and power metal that get played at PP which would still give loads of options for people, and you could maybe include like bonus point(s) for sending any non-banned artists that are on next year's PPUSA roster.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.

I would probably not play if it's only limited to PPUSA artists tbh. Plus, I think you already know some of the bands? And I don't think you'd enjoy the ones I'm excited for. Run one, but don't limit it to just PPUSA! My two cents. :)

Mine not starting is because I seriously doubt I can commit to it and finish the thing. It's not that I don't want to run one, but I barely have the time to actually listen to the music, so at the current moment my rounds would need to take around 2 weeks each. I don't want to do that and I would think nobody wants to participate in something that takes this long.

I have some ideas ready for how I would like to run a roulette (multiple songs per round, make it themed in some way, send me various genres of music at once for extra points, basically surprise me and send unexpected stuff, but you're also allowed to send well-known songs, as long as the majority would be 'new' to me), but I just don't think I can start it now due to time constraints.

I'm just going to go ahead and pull the trigger on mine. I'm putting together a banned list which is a bit of a pain and then I'll assemble the first post and start gathering victims entrants. Also, Rich, if you drop into this thread and wouldn't mind sending me the spreadsheet you use to do hangman, I'd appreciate it. I think it'd be pretty fun to try and work one out myself, but I haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

Everyone else, join my roulette, or else. i will be sad : (

i'm gonna send something stupid like emoviolence in round 1 and then synthpop in round 2 (unless rules prevent me from doing otherwise)

I don't know what emoviolence is but honestly it sounds like something I'd be into, and I definitely like synthpop.

The rules shouldn't prevent anyone from sending anything, except they will strongly discourage bog standard prog metal which I doubt you'd be sending me anyway.

As a side note I'm currently digging through my youtube history in order to make my banned list. I should really have come up with a better system of noting the stuff I've listened to, this is ridiculous.

Nah making an account is simple and looking up stuff is easy. So unless you go full nuts and catalogue everything by the exact physical release you have it should be fine.

It can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. For myself, I catalog everything, but I've been using the site for many years now, so it's easy to maintain at this point.

Ya know what, screw it, I'll start my roulette soon. Gimme a few days to prepare my OP and set things up. It'll be a short one, prob around 4 or 5 rounds at most, either based on EPs or the trendy "20 mins of an artist" thing that kids are into these days.

After "skimming" through Rich's seven thousand page roulette, I've kind of got the itch to do one, despite not being as active on here as I have been in the past. The prior one I did was in like 2013, how time flies.

So yeah, would like to sign up if that's cool.

EDIT: After actually taking the time to read the posts prior to mine, it kind of seems like people are just starting them on their own, yeah? Would totally be down for that then.
