Yo, ZZ Top. Under this format, would non-rock/metal/prog songs from traditional rock/metal/prog bands be acceptable? Like, if a song was more jazz, country or whatever, from a band within the "banned" genres, would that fly?
Asking for a friend.
Generally speaking... sure. But it would have to be a significant departure from their sound, something that sounds like a completely different band; I don't want a rock song with jazz elements, I would want a full-on jazz number. Not a rock song with like a jazz instrumental section but structured like a rock song. Like DT's Three Days... jazzy and weird near the end, but is more or less a prog rock song. Not really looking for that, I'm looking for something that is fully in the realm of another style, not a metal song with country elements like Sonata Arctica's Cinderblox, I want a straight-up country song, show me Toby Keith, show me George Strait. Something that would actually make the cut, in other words, would be Nightwish's Meadows of Heaven, or Toto's Spiritual Man, two highly gospel-influenced numbers that do not sound like metal or rock numbers. Check those out if you need an idea of what I'm getting at. Push come to shove, send several to me and I'll run with the one that is most out there.
I've also heard three ZZ Top records and don't like them that much (Degüello, Tres Hombres, La Futura) so I would strongly advise your friend against sending them regardless.
