The holodeck has many problems. Not least - as I believe we have discussed - the fact that two people can see different things in the same space.

For example - Picard could be standing in a hotel room and Geordi or whoever could go "outside" and still be in the same holodeck.

Warp Speed has a foot in scientific fact though. Theoretically at least it's plausible. Replicators not so much but I can get on board with re-arranging molecules to turn matter from one form into another.

But the holodeck just cannot work in any way . The most it could do is function as a transporter in reverse. And create objects within the space that cannot exist outside the holodeck.

The holodeck basically exists to get the actors off the ship now and again. The same reason they invented the transporter. To save money on the shuttle sequences.

Oh I realize all of that, I'm just saying that it's all out of the realm of reality for now anyway. For all we know, there will be a way to make it work eventually. No idea how, but I'm sure many technologies seemed equally impossible at one point in time.

I don't get paid for the 3D Daleks (unfortunately). This is my first payment for making lots of little icons.

Is Ł6 just for one sale, or is that over a certain period? At the moment it takes me a few days to make that much on Youtube. And now the Youtube Red earnings are pouring in too. $0.03 a day! Better make that two solid gold Pagani Zondas!

Not all specifically computer parts, but stuff related to my computer setup.
I've been wanting to get a new monitor for a while now, I'm looking at a 24" IPS monitor that's about $1200, really high end graphics monitor. I hate LCDs, so if I'm getting one, it's going to be a good one.
I also badly need a new computer chair because my current one is on life support. It's missing wheels, and it's all flaked off badly. I also want a new computer desk, a standing desk.
And one day I'll order that custom mechanical keyboard.

It's a flawed technology, and became standard long before they even came close to matching CRTs in any regard (and TN panels still aren't a viable replacement imo). Even now, the average consumer LCD is garbage, and they're completely unusable for even the most basic of graphics work. And the default gamma/brightness out of the box on them is so far off, and most people don't bother adjusting them, then bitch and moan when a website uses the colour white.

IPS monitors are the way to go, but then you've got the trade-off of decent colour and viewing angles often at the expense of refresh rate and input lag. It's always a compromise. The one I want is a beast of a graphics monitor that comes factory calibrated to be almost perfect (or you can use a calibrator to get it even better). Since this is the first time I've bought a monitor since 2003 to finally replace my CRT, I'm going to splash out and get one that isn't going to be a step backwards.

I don't recall seeing a plasma advertised for years now (although I don't really pay attention). I've been waiting for over 5 years for OLED monitors, but that technology is taking it's sweet time. And my CRT's res is getting restrictive for my work, so I really need full HD.

I think Panasonic is the only major manufacturer that bothers (though it's been a while since I kept myself abreast of the situation). Even then, they were only reproducing the same 60" or so 1080p screens - and had no plans for manufacturing any at 4K, which is what I would want when I buy my next TV.

OLED sounds really good on paper but you're right about the amount of time it's taking. I don't think the price tag is going to be pretty to begin with regarding OLED, either.

Nope, it sure isn't, even for the tiny displays. At that price point, the average consumer probably isn't going to care about the difference in quality. Like many new technologies, I think patents have probably hurt the development and price (basically killed the SED display).
Oh well, for over a grand, hopefully this LCD will be adequate for now.

I don't know the settings for every monitor made. But the majority of LCDs are too bright for a start. Most LCDs can do 250-300cd at full brightness, when it's recommended to run monitors somewhere around 120cd. And there should be plenty of sites and tools that help adjust a monitor's gamma, although imo it's kind of futile on a TN panel.
