Movie Streaming/Rental Fees in 2021
« on: March 23, 2021, 05:07:53 AM »
I know theaters are closed and filmmakers need to make money but c'mon man.
$24.99 cad to rent Wonder Woman? I really want to see the new Godzilla vs Kong when it comes out, but I doubt I will, considering...

You could subscribe to HBO Max, which I think is less than $15 per month and get not only WW84, but also shitloads of other content.  In fact, you might be able to get an introductory month for free and then cancel before it renews.

since I had HBO through Comcast I automatically got HBO Max for free.  I had to upgrade my box though.  Which was still free.

It sucks for single people like myself, but $25 for a rental is like 40% of what it'd cost for family to see it in theaters. I think that's the target market.

I was thinking about this last night. Black Widow is coming out with a streaming option in July and that's 30 quid, I think. It's cheaper than going to the cinema for my family of four but some heavy price tag for one or two people.

I imagine the Bond film people will be looking at the results of this very closely.

I realize $25 is a good deal if you're used to taking a family of 5 to the theater.
I usually go to the movies alone... Also, before covid, I've been renting new releases for $10 at the most. It just sucks that the prices got so jacked.

Or you can look at it as paying for early access.   I bought the $30 premium fee for Raya and the Last Dragon on Disney+, so my daughter could see it.  If we waited, it would be free in our subscription in June.  So $30 for three months early access ($10 per month) or wait for 3 months for free.  I expect Black Widow to be the same.  Be patient and it will be free on Disney+.

I am not in to new films at this point in my life, so paying $30 to watch any film in my house seems ridiculous. When I had no cable and no kids, I'd be fine plunking down $15 for a DVD, but that was for something I owned, and I'd usually get releases that had a bunch of extra features I enjoyed watching.

Dude....seriously?

I spend $50 total EASILY every time I go to see a movie. (This includes everything I do on the entire outing)

So I literally spend less than 50% of what I usually would to stay home and pop a bag of popcorn.

Seriously...you’re not seeing the bigger picture

I was only commenting for myself. I don't personally derive as much pleasure from going to a theater as much as you do. I don't spend $50 on myself over the course of a couple weeks. If the business model works, great. The kids had a movie night last night and we passed on that Premier Access film on Disney+ for something available on the normal subscription. They didn't care. They'll catch it when it is off 'premier' status.
