30 Years Of Dream Theater Tour
« on: February 24, 2015, 10:53:32 AM »
Hello. I am a big fan of your music and realized that 2015/2016 marks thirty years of Dream Theater music. As far as any ideas for touring for it, are you going to do anything for a 30th anniversary tour? And if you are, do you think you could reunite with some former members for celebration (preferably Mike Portnoy and if possible Kevin Moore)? Because it has been five years since Mike Portnoy left and the occasion feels right for a reunion with old members.

Hey painman80 - welcome to the forum. Judging by what you've posted, you're writing to the band members hoping for a reply. While this is the officially unofficial forum of DT and the band members do view the discussions on here, they (as far as I know) have yet to actually post on here.

As for your question regarding the 30th anniversary of the band, at this time, nothing has been said by any of them in interviews that they would do anything out of the ordinary for the upcoming tour. That's not to say that they won't, as they celebrated their 20th anniversary 10 years ago, and just celebrated the 20th and 15th anniversaries of Awake and SFaM respectively. So for now, we'll just have to sit tight and wait.

But as for inviting past members of the band to join them if they do an anniversary tour, I think that would be highly unlikely. Kevin Moore for many years has refused to make any comments about DT at all, and has refused previous invitations to join DT on stage (both in 2000 for the NYC show that was released as Live Scenes From New York, and for the 2004 show where they performed all of When Dream and Day Unite to celebrate it's 15th anniversary). And unfortunately, it appears that, aside from Jordan, MP does not currently have a good relationship with any members of DT. And with Derek being close friends with MP, I'd seriously question whether he'd be willing to join DT on stage or not. Charlie Dominici would be the only one I could see being openly willing to do it, and if he's the only previous member willing to do it, I doubt the band would have any past members join them.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Any 'surprises' would probably be kept under wraps anyway so they'd be, you know, a surprise. But I would keep expectations very low and not be too optimistic about this kind of thing at the moment. Maybe on the 40th.  ;D

Idk... 30 years is a pretty big deal. Seeing their 20 year show at RCMH seemed like yesterday.

I'd expect a setlist that had a little bit of everything from all albums, including WDaDU - the biggest hits, some deeper fan favorite cuts and a couple of unplayed/rarely played tracks. Hard to say if they'll do any of the Majesty-era tracks - I can't really imagine they would, but then again they did do some WDaDU tracks on the Dramatic tour, so who knows.

It'll be interesting to see if they go in chronological order again. With Rush doing it on the current tour, they may shy away from it just so they don't look like they're copying the idea. Then again, JP's MO usually is "WWRD?" so who knows? I'm also curious to see if they'll do any changing of the setlist from show to show (aside from abbreviating it for various shows); my gut feeling is that the static setlist will continue to happen.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I really hope they carry over the 30th anniversary tour into 2016, when they do more than festival shows in Europe, and do a full Evening With Worldwide tour. I'm pretty certain it will, as they did the 20th tour in 06. For the festivals this summer, I could see:

The Glass Prison (will always include this in my set predictions out of sheer desire to see it live. Also, it's a kick ass opener.)
This Dying Soul
Innocence Faded (Only song they haven't played with Mangini. If they do anything off Awake, It'll be this imo.)
A Rite of Passage
Constant Motion
Panic Attack
Just Let Me Breathe
Bridges in the Sky
Only a Matter of Time
Surrender to Reason
Home
-------------------------
Pull Me Under

Clocks in at 105 min. JP said they're playing 2 hours at some of these festivals, so it's feasible. 10/12 songs have not been played with the current lineup, including a song not played at all yet.

Damn forgot about those! Then I'm definitely going with Voices, maybe even Erotomania too. They're more popular, and imo WAY better.

I just hope there's no WDADU songs, except maybe for TKH. Well, I guess we'll find out pretty soon.

Will anyone be able to post the setlist song by song live from the Belarus show?

There's so many more songs they haven't played with Mangini. Unless you just mean off Awake, then my point is moot. :P

Fun fact, Through Her Eyes was played since in 2004 and once in 2005 when they did SFAM as a whole as a one-off thing. :tup

Anybody here knows if any show of this tour will be with DT headlining or outside any festival?
I'm asking this because there's a lot of especulation on the setlist and the reality is maybe DT won't have more than 90 min to play at any show.
Thanks!

I think this is a realistic setlist that I wish they could play live :
Act I
 1.The Enemy Inside
 2.On The Backs of Angels
 3.A Rite of Passage
 4.Constant Motion
 5.Panic Attack
 6.Endless Sacrifice
 7.The Great Debate
Act II
 8.Regression
 9.Overture 1928
10.Strange Deja Vu
11.Trial of Tears
12.Scarred
13.Metropolis
14.Another Hand/The Killing Hand
15.A Change of Seasons
Encore:
16.The Count of Tuscany
OR !
They could play something much more interesting like the 12 Step Suite for the first time ever
Act I : The Twelve Steps
 1.The Glass Prison
 2.This Dying Soul
 3.The Root of All Evil
 4.Repetance
 5.The Shattered Fortress
Act II
 6.On the Backs of Angels
 7.The Looking Glass
(some kind of time machine video back to 1985)
 8.Another Won
 9.Another Hand/The Killing Hand
10.Under a Glass Moon
11.Scarred
12.Trial of Tears
13.The Spirit Carries On
14.A Change of Seasons
Encore:
15.The Count of Tuscany

Based on the potential setlist spoilers from Jordan's video and my own guesses, I could see them playing a setlist like this on the headlining dates this summer (2 hours):

1. Bridges in the Sky
2. Panic Attack
3. Blind Faith
4. Behind the Veil
5. Take the Time
6. Through Her Eyes
7. Only a Matter of Time
8. Erotomania
9. Voices
10. Hollow Years
11. As I Am
Encore:
12. A Change of Seasons

*(possible) SPOILERS BELOW*

I know there's nothing from SC or BC&SL, but the 4 songs at the end of the list in the video were in chronological order, yet there was nothing between PA and BITS, so I wouldn't be surprised if they skipped those two albums on this tour. But of course this is just speculation, since we have no idea what the rest of the list looks like.
