I just discovered Crimson thanks to the ProgArchives website.  I usually don't go for the cookie monster vocals but there is too much great music going on here to ignore.  I'm listening to it all the way through.

I'm listening to it all the way through.

That's the only way.

Still simply amazing, both of them.

I didn't check out Crimson 2 yet but I will. I listened to the first one twice tonight and really loved it.

It made my top 20, it's just magic.  The second one is a different beast.  It doesn't have quite the magic and atmosphere as the first, but it's still an amazing piece of music.

I'm checking out the second one now. I see what you mean about the differences. It's still good but doesn't quite have that same aura of mystique to it. It's like they shot their load with Crimson.  Crimson 2 is what was left running down their legs that didn't quite make it in.

Yes, exactly.

Crimson 2 was actually created 7 years after the first, so you can see why it would sound so different.  I still find it just as enjoyable as the first, as stated just not as magical.  I appreciate the extra heaviness in the second one too, and there's some beautiful sections through the song too.

So now after hearing this I was inspired to go listen to Cynic again and check out some other similar bands, Alarum, Blotted Science, Behold...The Arctopus, just to name a few.

Don't forget Athiest and Death.

I have an Alarum album but can't remember anything from it.  Should get it out.

Can you believe I never got into Death?   You should also check out Exivious and Textures also. I'm just giving them a quick listen to and they sound like both might be worth a full listen.

Love Edge of Sanity (Purgatory Afterglow holy mother fuck what an album), but I never really got into Crimson. I should give it another shot.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

"Crimson" is just incredible. the opening 5 minutes alone are worth the affection it gets, but then it just keeps delivering for 35 more minutes! every section has at least one mindblowing moment. not just an achievement in death metal but in songwriting, pacing, and storytelling too. i dig the second one quite a lot but that's mostly because i love Swanö's style and i think everything he touches turns to gold – an opinion created by Crimson! (and Moontower!)

don't buy it on vinyl, though.

Yeah I must have been in a bad mood when I listened to it all the other times. Listened to it today and it was better than sex.

Or maybe the sex was much better back then?

There are a ton of other bands out there to be discovered so I get the feeling I'm in for a pleasant surprised.  Is there are thread already made for Technical/Extreme Prog?  I'm really getting to Blotted Science.  They remind me of  Animals as Leaders.
