My guess is, once Murphy refused to do the Cosby skit, they had no alternative to it (they probably never thought he'd refuse to do it, so they didn't write another skit to do just in case), hence his brief and forgettable appearance.

Very uncomfortable for the viewer. Especially when he told them to go to commercial.
