As much as I love White Lion, I love the original. That reminds me I need to find my Golden Earrings CD's and throw them onto I-Tunes.

Did Golden Earring even have any other songs?

Twilight Zone from the early 80s says hi. Though Golden Earring has an absurdly long history-they were founded in 1961-and a massive amount of success, you know, everywhere else but America. :lol. I believe they haven't even paid much attention to the US market since the 80s. Radar Love was so big, though, that Golden Earring toured the US and among their openers were Kiss and Aerosmith.

Van Halen - You Really Got Me, Dancin' In The Street, heck every VH cover. :lol

Agreed . Another band I would add to that is Talisman.

eg

Crazy (Seal): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXy5FkEnQNo

Frozen (Madonna) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWbA10ySf_I

Crazy , in particular , is a ripper.

I didn;'t even realise Frozen was a Madonna song for quite some time after hearing it. Really need to brush up on my Madonna ::)

Indeed! Saw them a few years back and it was really cool. One of the oldest and most steady bands out there. And they still make music occasionally, which is nice if you like classic rock n' roll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqycb3SunUk

Warren Dane's solo album had great covers of "Lucretia My Reflection" and Paul Simon's "Patterns". Both are very different takes on the originals.

Manfred Mann's entire bloody career was made from making cover versions that were better than the originals, but we'll just pick the best known, since the Manfred Mann's Earth Band version of Blinded by the Light is so definitive people don't know it's a Springsteen cover.

The US version of Moontan is great, and Radar Love is the weakest song on it.

I never knew Manfred Mann's Blinded by the Light wasn't their own. Love that song.

Just listened to the Springsteen version. I've just never, ever been a fan of the boss, so you can imagine which one I think is better.

Most people cover songs that are already iconic, so that usually guarantees they won't be better.

Aretha Franklin - Respect

Not a lot of people know that it was originally by Otis Redding, but it's safe to say that Aretha's version is lightyears better.

Nightmare Cinema-Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers"

FTFY

I don't know if you were telling me I was wrong and correcting me...

...but I was referring to the 1995 version from the UNCOVERED show on the ACoS disc.

As far as I KNOW they played THAT version "straight" and NOT as "NIGHTMARE CINEMA!"

I respectfully disagree
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

And to see him live was like a religious experience. I saw him on the Grace tour.

The one interview that stuck in my mind with Jeff was him talking about sonics. I'm paraphrasing, " You can play an acoustic heavy, and play an electric guitar softly. I like dynamics in my music."

That always stuck with me.

Gary Jules - Mad World (Tears for Fears)

Incorrect. The original is FAR better.

I heard the Jules version first, so I was surprised when I heard the original a few years later, that it was more upbeat in tempo.

Not my favourite TFF song though.
