On a side note, Disney just bought Marvel Comics for $4 billion.   :eek

Resurrection

Been reading Transmetropolitan, which is incredible. Almost done with the third volume and I'm pumped there is seven more. Also started on Planetary though I've only read the first volume. Read the first deluxe volume of Y: The Last Man and I have the second one waiting. Can't wait to see where the story is going.

I love Warren Ellis...  Planetary is great stuff.  The only problem is that the characters have a ton of history and back-story attached to them, it gets confusing sometimes.

Yeah I had to get filled in slightly after reading the first volume. I understand who the people showing up in the story are based on and it makes the story kind of hilarious.

I was thinking about resurrecting this thread since I´m getting into comics and I bought many of the books recommended in this thread. I usually buy a lot of stuff at once and then start reading it. I´ve got:

The Sandman (5 volumes so far. Haven´t started with it)
V for Vendetta (I'm halfway through it, watched the movie before so I don´t feel I have a fresh reading of it)
300 (hs, I love the movie though)
The Dark Knight Returns (hs)
The Complete Persepolis (I´ve read only about 75 pages but it´s very good, definitely recommended for those who want a more candid story)
Kingdom come (haven´t started)
Scott Pilgrim (hs)
Death Note (the anime has become one of my favorites, the writing is consistently excellent)
Blankets (very good but maybe too sad for my taste)
Bone (only a few pages into it but looks good)
Ronin (hs)

A very popular comic that hasn´t been mentioned here is the Love & Rockets series. I´ve got the first 2 volumes of the compilation. Some of the stories are kinda tame and the writting is not always stellar, but it´s good, entertaining reading most of the time, especially if you want something with a Latin American feeling. Additionally, I´m planning to get the leage of extraordinary gentlemen, Batman: Year 100, some Daredevil novels that everybody recommends and maybe a couple of good comedy-oriented books.

Also, if anyone can recommend a compilation featuring Iron Man, I would greatly appreciate it. He´s become my favorite super hero lately, but since I´ve never been into comics before I haven´t read anything with him.

Warren Ellis did a run of Iron Man, collected in one book called Extremis.   :tup

Thank you for the recommendation. I´m waiting for it to be released as 1 volume on April this year.

I have volume 1 of Pretty, Baby, Machine which is about a conspiracy to kill Al Capone. It was pretty cool but I can't find volume 2 or 3 anywhere. It's more in comic book format but that's because it's short I think.

Iron and the Maiden is really good, albeit only 6 issues(#0-#4, +1 specail).  It was written by the same guy that created the Jak and Dexter video game series.  It follows Iron, a man essentially built by a ridiculous steroids regime, as he tries to survive being a pawn in the various crime/political/religious syndicates' games.  The Maiden is a woman with a mysterious connection to his plot.

...and yes, Iron Maiden sued.  The series was renamed The Iron Saint for the collected edition that is coming out soon.  Stupid as Hell that a band that named itself after such a notorious device can sue people who also reference it.

Really hoping more comes from this series.  Aspen Comics did the first run and Top Cow has it right now.  It could bounce around like this between the various places that take creator owned series, but it did sell really well from what I know so I expect more from it if the owner has time for it outside of the video game industry.

Thank you very much orcus and yorost, and very interesting story. I´ll try to check those out.

I´m almost finished with the Justice series (made Green Lantern my favorite character from the DC Universe, I have to get more stuff from him) and Kingdom Come is next. I´m also on the second part of the Civil War series and it´s awesome, only a couple of weak stories but the plots with Ironman, Spiderman, Captain America and Fantastic Four are excellent. Hope Thor makes an appearance soon.

The Green Lanterns are the greatest part of the DC universe. :)  I personally like John, Guy, and Kyle much more than Hal, though.  Well, I like Guy when the writers focus on him as a more serious character instead of just being some idiotic goofball.  The recent Corps. teams have been fantastic with his character.

Well I don´t really know much about what your talking about  :lol only that Hal Jordan is the Green Lantern I know. I have two fairly new TPB (Secret Origin and Rebirth), and I plan to get the recent Corps series. There is one scene at the Justice volumes where Hal is lost in the most distant part of the universe that blew my mind.

The Punisher run written by Garth Ennis (same guy wrote Preacher) has a lot of mafia/gangster-related goodies.  Even some action involving the IRA, in a book called Kitchen Irish.  And being that Frank Castle was a Vietnam vet, there's one Punisher graphic novel featuring his days in 'nam, called Born.

So it has been awhile since this thread got any attention. Currently I have been getting monthly subscriptions to several DC comics titles as well I am subbed to future issues that has not come out yet (Listed below). But for the first time in a long time in April I decided to pickup a few marvel titles I have not had the time to read them yet but I am excited to go through them. As well there are a few Marvel titles that are starting in the summer that I plan on picking up. My personal opinion is that comics have been awesome the past few years (DC Comics for me) and hopefully this success continues.

Any titles that are rocking your world right now?
The Green Lantern Titles have been awesome with the current Story Arc of "War of the Green Lanterns" running across all three titles. Brightest Day has been really good and has just finished it 24 issue run. I still have not read the final issue as I get my comics mailed to me. And I cannot wait to read Action Comics 900 Superman makes his way back to the title after a few years.

I'm resurrecting this ancient thread because I recently was introduced to/fell in love with Preacher and wanted to know who else has read it. Also, because I want to turn you all on with my new avatar :eyebrows:

I read the first 10 issues or so of Preacher when it was originally published.  I thought it was great, but that was right around the time I just stopped collecting comics.

But yeah, fantastic stuff.

Cool... I'm actually a total comic novice and have pretty much only read stuff that's been given to me and/or highly recommended. Preacher was one of those things and I fell in love with it/tore through all of it in a very short period of time. I'd actually be curious to hear more about a Christian's perspective on it, since mine is sort of the opposite.

I grew up on comic books in the 90s. For many years, comic books and action figures were the central, most important aspect of my life (later, they were replaced by video games and then by music and girls - I'm still not through that phase, thank god). Spider-Man was my all time favorite and I got into it right in the middle of the symbiote phase. Venom, Carnage, all that good stuff. I read comics all day and then picked up my action figures in a highly inspired state and made my own epic stories in bullet time and with gross sound effects. Then came Spawn. It was dark, violent, gory, edgy, mature and I was 8 years old. "This is serious business, this is some heavy shit" I remember thinking. A score and a half later, I still think of them with deep fondness and nostalgia and sometimes I even fish out an old comic or two, smell the pages, vivify the memories (I can still hear my inner child reading voice in my head and all the different voices I gave the characters). I regard Spawn and 90s Spider-Man as classics...

...years later, it was a real culture shock to stumble upon the internet and see that most people regard them as utter shit. :lol

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.
