Battle of the piano ballads
« on: February 06, 2015, 01:08:00 PM »
Anna Lee
Disappear
Eve
Far From Heaven
The Spirit Carries On
Space Dye Vest
The Answer Lies Within
Vacant
Wait For Sleep

I picked songs that mainly revolved around the use of the piano, and it had to be a complete ballad, so songs like Forsaken, and One Last Time didn't get in.  Order these songs from worst to best.  You have to think how emotional this would be if it was an album.

9. Wait For Sleep- It's ok, but feels like filler.
8. Vacant- Nice little song, but I never got the emotional hook the song seems to be trying to give out.
7. Disappear- Really good, emotional song, but it's just way too depressing and I don't like listening to it that much.
6. Far From Heaven- I find BTS and TITL to be better ballads on the album.
5. The Spirit Carries On- Great song, somewhere in the middle for me.  Not much else to say.
4. The Answer Lies Within- About the same as TSCO, but I listen to this song a little more.
3. Anna Lee- Fantastic song here, one of the best on FII, in my opinion.  So emotional, I love everything about it.
2. Eve- Beautiful.
1. Space Dye Vest- A top 10 DT song for me I think.  Fantastic in every way.

Okay, I'll bite

1. Disappear - A top ten (maybe five) song for me right here. It's evocative, experimental and beautiful.
2. Eve
3. Vacant
4. The Spirit Carries On
5. Anna Lee
6. Far From Heaven
7. Wait For Sleep
8. The Answer Lies Within

199. Space Dye Vest (although the version on BTFW is listenable)

I just realized I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum.  If one of the mods can move it that would be great.  Thanks.

1. Eve
All of these DT piano ballads are really good, but I choose this one as my favorite mainly because it's different from everything DT has ever done. It's simplistic, atmospheric, engaging, dreamy and quite a beautiful instrumental. Only song that comes close to it, both in terms of style and uniqueness in the DT context, is

2. Disappear
Again, it's a "rare" song among the DT Catalog. It has an overall experimental and dare I say "Weird" feeling, but it's also a warm and heartfelt ballad.

3. Space Dye Vest
This is a controversial one! I see people either loving or hating it. I for one love it. The "I'll never be open again" part might be over the top, but I like it a lot nonetheless.

4. Vacant
5. Far From Heaven

7. Anna Lee

1. Space-Dye Vest (my favorite DT song)
2. Eve (top 10 DT song)
3. Wait for Sleep (maybe not top 10, but pretty high on my list for sure)
4. Vacant (just beautiful)
5. Disappear (this song has grown on me a lot)
6. Far from Heaven (good)
7. Anna Lee (I used to dislike this, but now I think it's alright)
8. The Spirit Carries On (overrated)
9. The Answer Lies Within (snoozefest with cheesy lyrics)

7.The Answer Lies Within

I wouldn't characterize The Spirit Carries On or Disappear as piano ballads.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

1. Wait For Sleep

It was one of the first songs I learned to play on the piano. Doing so essentially changed my views on playing music, and it will likely always remain my favorite of the piano ballads for that very reason

2. Disappear
3. Vacant
4. TALW
5. SDV
6. TSCO
7. FFH
8. Anna Lee
Only a prog fan would try to measure how much they enjoy a song by an equation. :lol

Do I have to rank all of them? All I know is that Space Dye Vest is No. 1.

You have to think how emotional this would be if it was an album.

I think about how one-dimensional it would be.  If all of those songs comprised one album, it would be the least diverse album of their career.

Plus, we'd all be wondering who the hell Victoria is every time we listened to The Spirit Carries On (which, like hef said, really isn't a piano ballad). :lol :lol

disappear is way way more than a piano ballad, lol
vacant has bass as its primary instrument
the spirit carries on is also way more than a piano ballad
Eve's not really a ballad at all and doesn't really count either
space dye vest is only halfway there

anyways of the four left

Far From Heaven
The Answer Lies Within
Wait for Sleep
Anna Lee
