Hopefully, I didn't screw up any of the years.

This was both painful and fun.  So fun, I tried to go as many years before my birth year before it became too much work.  So painful, some years I had around five albums and basically flipped a coin while the coin pointed a gun to my head, and some years where I just felt like I missed something due to missing meta data.  Some great albums didn't make it just because of a competitive year, while others made it even though I don't consider them a top 100 album.

The most to gain from this thread is checking out the lists of others to spot holes.  To help with that, I listed a few of my favorite songs from the album because some albums have 1-2 amazing songs together with a bunch of mediocre songs.  I'm more of a song person than an album person.

1966 - The Beatles:     The Revolver     (Tomorrow Never Knows)
1967 - The Beatles:     Sgt. Pepper's     (A Day in the Life)
1968 - Jimi Hendrix:     Electric Ladyland     (All Along the Watchtower)
1969 - The Beatles:     Abbey Road     (Something)

1970 - Curtis Mayfield:     Curtis     (Move On Up)
1971 - John Lennon:     Imagine     (Jealous Guy)
1972 - Curtis Mayfield:     Super Fly     (Pusherman)
1973 - Elton John:     Goodbye Yellow Brick Road     (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road)
1974 - Supertramp:     Crime of the Century     (Dreamer)
1975 - Queen:     A Night at the Opera     (Bohemian Rhapsody)
1976 - Genesis:     Trick of the Tail     (Dance on a Volcano)
1977 - Rocky:     Soundtrack     (Gonna Fly Now)
1978 - Foreigner:     Double Vision     (Blue Morning, Blue Day)
1979 - Supertramp:     Breakfast in America     (The Logical Song)

1980 - Peter Gabriel:     Peter Gabriel 3     (Games Without Frontiers)
1981 - Phil Collins:     Face Value     (In the Air Tonight)
1982 - Toto:     Toto IV     (Africa)
1983 - Police:     Synchronicity     (King of Pain)
1984 - Van Halen:     1984     (Too many favorites)
1985 - Tears for Fears:     Songs from the Big Chair     (Shout)
1986 - Metallica:     Master of Puppets     (Battery)
1987 - Dokken:     Back for the Attack     (Mr. Scary)
1988 - Jason Becker:     Perpetual Burn     (Too many favorites)

1990 - Pantera:     Cowboys from Hell     (Cemetery Gates)

Yeah, I have you to thank for that Doll!  It's absolutely true, though. Every time I hear that album, or a song comes on rotation, I get the same thrill I had when I first heard it. That's a rare treat for me these days.

I found 1971 and 1976 to be particularly problematic. By following the rule of one per year, I probably left more favorites off the list than I put on it!

I will say, if I were to redo my list based on what my favorite was during that year, it would look completely different. My tastes have changed a lot over the years.

So awesome! I got to hang with them when they came to town with Coheed in the fall, and they're coming back in a couple weeks but playing with three bands that I'm not crazy about, so we'll see. It's only $17, so I could just see them and bail.

I've got all but three years down. 1998, 2003 and 2008. And I'm really struggling to think of what even came out those years. Forget it. I'm just gonna post the albums now and leave out those years. If I think of something, I'll come back.

1991 - Crowded House - Woodface
1992 - Dream Theater - Images and Words

1995 - Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
1996 - Porcupine Tree - Signify
1997 - The Flower Kings - Stardust We Are
1998 -
1999 - Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream
2000 - Doves - Lost Souls
2001 - Pendragon - Not of this World
2002 - Spock's Beard - Snow
2003 -
2004 - Keane - Hopes and Fears
2005 - Dream Theater -Octavarium

On the face of it, this seems ridiculously hard to me.

Well, Thank You Scientist is remastering and re-releasing MoN-EP this year so maybe it'll make it to your 2015 spot.  :)

Yeah, it was REALLY hard for me to pick JUST ONE for a lot of the years after 1994. The first decade was fairly easy, though, since I don't really listen to a lot of music from that span of 84-94, unless it's any of the aforementioned prog bands. From 95 onward, though, between SB/Morse, TFK/Stolt, PT/Wilson, and DT, it was hard to pick any single album. If my life was at stake...maybe. Otherwise, nope. :rollin

...Really long list
That is one varied and eclectic list, even for DTF. Didn't realize you were such a Fogey either.

I found 1971 and 1976 to be particularly problematic.

Those were two of the easiest years for me.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

I'm fairly sure that already came out towards the latter part of 2014, in fact. But that's only a re-release, so can't count. :P

It was very close.  It was right next to the Echolyn album.

That is one varied and eclectic list, even for DTF.
It is one of the main reasons I go to DT forums.  To find new (to me) music.  The albums themselves are all relatively mainstream, mainly because I asked myself if the more obscure albums were the best of that year and I almost always told myself "nope."  Obscure artists tend to have great highs, but really low lows.

Definitely one of the older posters, but I cheated a bit and did a little less than a decade before my birth year because I had to get the Beatles and Curtis Mayfield in there.  The funny thing is my musical collection really thinned out dramatically before my birth year.  And some great artists I only have "Greatest Hits" albums, so they didn't show up in a specific year search and were probably overlooked.

Some artists I thought for sure would make the list but didn't:
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Duran Duran - Wedding Album
Fates Warning
Grassy Knoll
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Nine Inch Nails
Queensryche - Empire & OM
Ra
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Mother's Milk
Red Square Black - Square
Sevendust
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Symphony X
T-Ride
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses / October Rust

Soundtracks for:
Romeo & Juliet
The Crow

It would be kind of cool to start a thread (one thread a year going reverse) that was Top 10 Songs of the Year.  So many great songs that weren't on great albums.

King, I love the choice of Ten Summoner's Tales for 1993. I ultimately picked Undertow as my favorite from that year, but to be honest I probably listen to TST more. The song Sober won it for Tool but just barely.

I don't know if you can tell, but I have no idea who Karate is.  Can you recommend 1 to 3 of their best songs to check out on YouTube?

I'm not surprised you don't know who they are. They were an indie rock band with a pretty heavy jazz influence from Boston that had a pretty big underground following, but never really got too big. Anyways, for song recommendations, uh, I would say Diazapam, Tow Truck, and Sever for their "heavier" stuff, and then Small Fires, This Day Next Year, and Sing for their jazzier stuff.

I hate to break it to ya, but T.O.P. was '93 instead of '03.  They released Oakland Zone in '03.

I would have loved to put Tower on my list somewhere, but my favorite albums of theirs came out before I was born.  T.O.P. is spectacular, but I couldn't quite place it above Counterparts.

1995: THE WORST YEAR IN MUSIC IN THE LAST 22 YEARS

Agreed. There are some great releases in that year, but it's really odd how it just doesn't stack up to the years that surround it.

I'm refraining from posting my list since some of it might spoil my top 50 albums list, but I think Slowdive's Pygmalion really saves the day here.
