Snarky Puppy (why has no one ever heard of them?)

Dallas based group of incredibly funky jazz musicians that put the best of every genre in a blender.  Do yourself a favor.

I've heard of Skinny Puppy, but I think they're some sort of goth band or whatever you '90s kids are listening to

Yes, extremely entertaining. Those guys are clearly having a blast, and the music is just as fun to listen to. Thanks for this Yngvai, loved it.

I might like this one even more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67PMG2nVs4k&feature=related

Watch the whole vid, it's epic to say at the least.

Bump, this awesome band cannot die a silent death on DTF  :P.

One of the best musical recommendations I've ever had, I absolutely love this stuff. It's adventurous, tight as hell, and it has balls, no matter what style it is in. Amazingly captured on vid while recording their album in front of a live audience. The most enjoyable instrumental music I've ever heard maybe, I could literally watch this almost every day.

For the love of god, at least check out the ending to this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67PMG2nVs4k&feature=related

The whole vid is amazing, but the ending from from 4:25 on is just too badass.

One of the most badass electric violin solos, followed by a monstrous epic finale including a full on rock guitar solo. This is too freakin' sweet for words.  :tup :tup :tup :tup

You have no idea how heavy that song feels live.  That many musicians on a crowded stage at a bar, with all that bass going is just an insane thing to witness in person.

I don't mean to revive this, but a friend of mine just introduced me to this band, and I cannot get ENOUGH. This is some of the best music I've ever heard. i've always loved jazz, but it's come second to prog before now. This is so incredible. I think every DT fan will have the time of their lives with this band.

I can't stop listening to this song in particular. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67PMG2nVs4k

I'm listening to Slow Demon right now, and this is good shit. It's good some people still hold up the banner of prog (even though they probably don't see themselves that way)

Went to see that free entrance thing which turned out to be a radio show, with them playing three songs. The radio show gave away tickets for their show tonight, and we've won them! Will post impressions later.

Mad hyped for this one. It's really really cool to see the band's trajectory since this post. It's been wild to see that whole crew go from Dallas's best-kept secret to multiple Grammy-winning titans of their genre.

Definitely looking forward to this one.  Saw them live earlier this year.  This is absolutely one of my favorite bands.

Composition-wise every track is great. Some stand out above the rest sure, but I enjoy them all; in my opinion many of these tunes are going to be classics of theirs.

I find quite a few of the solos to be uninspiring, compared to previous albums and live show recordings. I'll give an example. The track Honiara on the album is one of my favorite compositions but the ending guitar solo just seems weak to me. Compare it to this live version from earlier in the year; that sax solo and buildup is magical. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B27XbLHquHk

Just seems to me that with so many nights worth of live recordings, some of the tunes probably had even better live versions that we will never get to hear...

Standout tracks for me (in terms of the entire picture; compositions and top class solos) are: Bet, Portal, Broken Arrow, Fuel City, Belmont and Pineapple.

I listened to the first 6 tracks or so today. I really liked it. It's a lot of music to take in though, especially in one sitting, so I'm sure I'll have more developed thoughts later on once it sinks in better.

Hey, my friend Michelle is opening for the Puppy starting tonight!  Michael League is a genius.  I love almost everything that comes out of his label, GroundUp Music.  Top notch musicians and genuinely nice guys from everything I hear.

They're coming back to First Avenue next March and having seen them once before, I am pretty tempted to go. Time/Money and risk may factor in, but i am leaning towards going.

Christian Nesmith even is a big fan and in awe of them per his post from last February
