DT the League 2013 - https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=34282.0

I've come up with an interesting twist for the League, assuming that people will like there to be a 2015 season.

Instead of having all of the songs squaring off against one-another, I've come up with the idea of having 3 separate divisions, which will allow the "big boys" to face "the big boys" while the lesser loved songs will face one-another.

The divisions for 2015 would be based on the 2014 post Album Tournament records. After 2015, the bottom 4 songs of each division would be regulated to the next lowest division, and the top 4 songs of each division (other than Division 1) will be promoted to the next highest division.  The divisions for 2015 would be as follows:

(2014 Post Album Tournament Rank.   Song Title   Record  Winning %)

Division 1
1.   A Change of Seasons 20-0 1.000
2.   Home 23-0  1.000

The Way It Used to Be 0-20 .000
You Not Me 0-21 .000
You or Me 0-20 .000

The idea would be for each division to have a 20 Week Regular season. Then we would have the Album Tournaments (which would be the only time that songs would face songs from the other divisions. After this each division will have its own 16 Song Tournament.

Please let me know what you think. Is having a season every year overkill? Do you prefer the old way over the new way? Any questions or suggestions? Feedback is encouraged.

Sounds like a good idea DoC.  I think it will classify the songs better and produce more balanced results.  Let's give it a whirl.

I like the Division idea. Too many times last year there were like 25-0 scores.

Well well! This time of year already! I love that this happens every year, especially now with the new division idea. At first I thought it would've been nice to crown one "ultimate champion", but I suppose the winner of Division 1 would get that, much like the champions of the Premier League are considered champions of England in football. And it would be nice that lower-ranked songs that normally wouldn't get any honours would get the chance to be named Champion, even of a lower division.

Also, I assume the bottom songs of Division 3 would get relegated to the pile of songs below that don't take part in 2015.

Liking the division idea, although why not just have a division 4? Also I prefer to see songs in pairings like The Mirror/Lie and Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu rather than split up. That being said TDOE and OLT I don't put together because they seem to be the least sensible songs to put into one (I mean a fairly heavy instrumental paired with a softish sing along?).

Why? They're separate songs that just happen to segue into each other. By this principle, then The Root of All Evil, The Answer Lies Within, These Walls and I Walk Beside You should be counted as one song.

I see them as one song split into two. After all you pointed out that the music transitions into each other perfectly. With the Octavarium thing, they're not all linked that's just the extra "hidden bits" to do with the concept. Lie as you know came out of The Mirror and the Mirror then reprises at the end so they definitely count as one for me. On scenes Overture 1928 and Strange Deja Vu are classed as one scene so I would say the band wants them to be together. I will even include TDOE and OLT as one if I had to.

I don't think divisions are a good idea for a ranking. We're just blurring things. We'd like to compare the top 4 of the second division with the bottom 4 of the first, and this way we can't. One consequence is that next year, if the format is kept, we won't be sure the first division will have the 32 best songs. It may contain some which are the best among the 33-64 best.

I think people need to be careful when voting in these - a couple of the matchups from the division 3 poll have 30 votes between them, when there were only 26 members voting in total  :lol  Only about 5 of the matchups tally with the number of voters!

That's a very interesting observation. Hopefully people aren't just voting for their favorite 16 songs.

Two questions.

1. Is 'season's end' after the 20-week regular season, or the album tournaments?

2. Will the songs that get demoted out of Division 3 be included in the "tournament or survivor to determine which songs get promoted to Division 3"?

1. Season's end will be after the 20-week regular season. The album tournaments will be just for fun. I'm not going to count them in the W-L records since songs from different divisions will be playing in those tournaments, and they won't be evenly distributed across the albums.

2. I wasn't planning on having the Division 3 demoted songs involved in the promotion tournament, but I will think about it in the coming months.

It looks like that is what's happening.  Is it possible to vote for both songs in a match up?  I should think the poll wouldn't let you do that.

The only way to limit voting to one of the two songs in a match is to make a separate poll for each match-up, so 48 threads a week.  There's no way (that I know of) to force users to vote for only one of but not both options of two options of a +2 option poll.

That last sentence was a doozy.

A pleasant surprise to me that Disappear beat an epic. Not my #1 anymore, but still top 5, I believe.

Although The Great Debate falling to The Count was a disappointment for me.

There are a lot of songs that 'Disappear' should beat, but unfortunately, 'In the Presence of Enemies' ain't one of them.

Oh, yes it is.

What's with the general dislike of OAMOT? I would say that's the best song from WDADU and one of the 25 or so best DT songs.
And if spirit's a sign,

It maybe would have been a better DT song if it wasn't for the poor production and the vocals which I just don't like. At all. But yeah, one of the best from WDaDU.

For me, the music is fantastic, especially the outro section.  But the lyrical arrangement feels like trying to cram 12 minutes worth of lyrics into a six and a half minute song.  It is off-putting.

I'm a fan but I agree with Hef as far as his stance on both the musical arrangement and vocal arrangement.  There are definitely better choices on WDADU. The Killing Hand is one example.
