Piano Trios
« on: January 21, 2021, 08:10:28 AM »
I have three main types of music I like: rock/metal guitar bands, synthy pop, jazz piano trios.

My favourite piano trio is/was The Neil Cowley Trio but he's gone solo now and is now largely dull as whatnot. I really like Hiromi too but she can get a bit samey.

GoGo Penguin have mostly filled the gap for a few years but a new bunch have recently been delighting me:

fox capture plan - Japanese, very prolific, energetic, fresh modern takes on the jazzy piano format.

He was mentioned already, but I have to do it again. This amazing player passed away after a diving accident. He was an innovator in my opinion.

Hiromi Uehara's trio (note: I'm referring to the Hiromi-Simon Phillips-Anthony Jackson lineup only, not earlier ones.) is my favourite piano trio to date (and possibly of all time). So precise.

Loving Fraktions. Thanks! Will check Shai Maestro.

I have EST CD somewhere. I need to dig more into them.

I loved Spiral and Time Control and liked Spark. She is super precise. Would love to see her live.

I have seen her live (solo mind you). It was one of my alltime favourite concerts I attended to date (and I've seen a lot and I'm extremely hard to impress.)

Awesome. I'm properly jealous. She's played Ronnie Scott's in London a few times iirc but the kids were pretty young at that point or for whatever reason, I didn't get to go. Wonder when there will be concerts again....

Digging "Activating Infinity" by The Bad Plus right now. There's more drum fill on that first track than a whole Mastodon record!  :lol

ah yes, The Bad Plus are interesting too. Far looser than Hiromi's second trio though :D (they do have great ideas though, admittedly)

I really like Hiromi's stuff (any iteration) and the Bad Plus.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

oh another one worth mentioning: Esbjörn Svensson's trio (real trailblazers IMHO, as Hiromi's trio and The Bad Plus)

I talked about Shai Maestro last week and was gladly surprised when I saw that they put out a new album today: https://open.spotify.com/album/5lmVJX32hZzCHAf3uYVifn

Michel Camilo Trio, whatever constellation is always superb.

I like the Florestan Trio on Hyperion Records. Brilliant players. They only recorded classical works, though.  ;D

You can sample their Beethoven piano trios here, for example:

Surely, Paul Bley belongs in this thread.

Paul Bley - With Gary Peacock
Paul Bley - Ballads

Two very fine late 60s jazz albums, even though they were released in the 70s.

Don't know what happened to them, as they didn't put out an album, but GEM released three videos and they're  :metal :metal :metal
It's a piano trio consisting of Eldar Djangirov, Henrik Linder (Dirty Looops) and Matt Garstka (Animals as Leaders) :eek

This too! I've been listening to the Hiromi trio project a lot the last few days, love the chemistry between the three of them.

I specially love this performance of "Move" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rxYw7Y45Eo

EDIT: Btw, this thread reminded me of this pic:

It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."
