I still don't know that much of Devin Townsend's discography yet (I've only heard four of his albums and have only listened to Ocean Machine and Ziltoid the Omniscient a lot), but I think I can safely say that Thing Beyond Things is one of my favorite songs of all time.

The "trilogy" tends to overshadow it but that song is certainly one of the reasons why the last stretch of Ocean Machine is so magical. :)

I'd say the whole 5-song run from Regulator to Thing Beyond Things is fantastic. The whole album is pretty great, but once Regulator starts, that's when it gets on a whole new level of greatness.

A recent listen of Empath did not change my opinion of it.  I still think it is a bit too schizo and all over the place, and not for the better more often than not, but there are some killer moments.  Singularity is a tough listen, as there are parts of it I cannot get into, but the "There Be Monsters" section is bad as hell (FACE THE REALITY, WAR!!), and then of course the final section is just crazy good.  I just wish the rest of the song around those two sections was as awesome.

The Puzzle and Snuggles finally have a release date of October 8.

https://devintownsendshop.com/

Looks like both albums are bundled together if you get the CDs or Boxset, and sold separately on vinyl.

I must admit I'm a bit out of the loop with these releases. Had he talked much about them because I can't really remember seeing many interviews.

Anyway, he's posted a teaser for each album on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/100044497596874/posts/364011068425477/

These albums seem to be the spiritual successors to Deconstruction/Ghost. I know I will personally be more drawn to The Puzzle. Looking forward to it.

Those teasers feel more like Devlab / The Hummer, tbh. :P I'm intrigued but mildly cautious as well.

Yeah these albums are gonna be more ambient/experimental. Similar to Devlab and Hummer but I think maybe a little bit more accessible. Lightwork is his next actual song-oriented release but I wouldn’t expect that until next year.

I'm disappointed the boxset doesn't come with an actual puzzle. That's a missed opportunity.

I've seen him mention "The Puzzle" here and there on his Twitter account but this is the first time I've heard about this Snuggles thing. Looks like I can just get them together in one Digipak, so that's cool. Kind of reminds me of how Z2 was.

I can understand even some of his bigger fans being out of the loop on everything he's been up to. He literally has like 10 things going at once lately. You have The Puzzle/Snuggles, Lightwork, and The Moth. He's doing live streams of albums, benefit streams, doing film stuff, he has streamed material he's not sure where it will end up (some material with Vai). etc. etc. etc.

I try to follow along as best I can and I gave up trying to keep up lol.

I agree based on what he's said about them they MAY have a little more direction than Devlab/The Hummer but it really sounds like it's going that way. As big a fan of him that I am, even I have a difficult time with some of that material.

I believe he specifically said its similar to those, which makes me uninterested if I'm being honest. The boxset looks really awesome though.  I'll check it out, but as much as I'm a big Devin fan, this isn't an immediate buy for me.

On another note, I think it's crazy how he's quarantining in a hotel in the UK before his shows next week.  I guess he's unvaccinated, not to bring that into the convo, but I find it really extreme to do all this for two concerts.  He's playing with a backing band from the UK too.  Not sure who, but he did say none of the Haken guys on twitter.

Not really though. He created "songs" out of jams and sent them out to other musicians as "guides" and gave them the reigns to do whatever with them. He got them back, made adjustments and created the songs.

That is what has me intrigued and might make me get the boxset.

Heard samples of these on youtube. I think I'm gonna have zero use for The Puzzle side but the Snuggles video had a Ghost vibe with Che involved, so that's an automatic yes for me. Those two are an amazing combo

This is a project that is more like a movie soundtrack. This is the sole reason the boxset is the videos, the album on USB and the Snuggles video on USB.

Just having these videos is expensive. Just look at how much Tools album cost physically as it included a video screen.

The Puzzle seems like it's going to be a bigger video screen. Could be the same small size.

Not to be mean and Frank, but it's like some of you didn't read the description of the Puzzle Project and what it is.

This Puzzle Project is not your typical album. If you are expecting that, then I don't know what to say other than you are guaranteed disappointment. Devin explained what this project is.

I personally think that's awesome and unique. The entire premise of The Puzzle is neat too. The main draw and purpose is to listen to the music while watching the videos to fully indulge in The Puzzle Project.

Que? I'm guessing this was something played at Bloodstock. Is a Sepultura song ft. Devin Townsend or vice versa?

I guess yes

Puzzle update! So despite moving the release date back twice already we're still facing supply issues with some of the box set elements and with about half the Red Splatter exclusive vinyl on devintownsendshop.com that still haven't arrived. Any orders containing these items won't get shipped until they arrive, hopefully, next week latest.
Adding to the delays is the partial lockdown in The Netherlands where the main warehouse is based. It means that all the staff hired to help with packing up the thousands of orders were sent home and it's now operating with one (very stressed) man to do all the work on his own.
The pallets with products going to the UK, USA, Finnish and Australian webshops are currently en-route, likely to arrive next week if customs decide to play it nice.
We've decided to stick to the December 3rd release date though so both The Puzzle and Snuggles will be available tomorrow on all digital platforms worldwide for your listening pleasure.
We apologize for the ongoing hassle and appreciate your patience tremendously.

Welp, I've tried to buy the friggin' CD pack off of his website about five times now, and it rejects me no matter what I try to pay with, so that's a wrap on that I guess. Sucks. I was hoping it'd be available through Amazon or my record store or something.

Just finished my first listen of The Puzzle and yeah this definitely isn't going to be for everyone :lol

That said the second half of this album is a lot more palatable than the first in terms of it being a lot less chaotic and "random". With the exception of the final track, everything from Perfect Owl onward was quite nice.

Onto Snuggles now.

to me the puzzle really feels like a natural extension of empath but the metalheads aren't gonna be thrilled by it
i do believe snuggles had the same amount of care put into it as the puzzle but it's hard for it to not feel like an afterthought by comparison, even if it's quite pleasant

Yup, I think it's great that he has the freedom to do things like this.  I was hoping there would be something for me, but I dont think thats the case and that's OK.  He's already working on another album and I'd imagine that is more in line with what I would enjoy from him.
