Devin posted a series of tweets this morning about a new album he's writing called "Lightworks". Sounds like it'll be a weird one, which is good news to me!

Devin posted a series of tweets this morning about a new album he's writing called "Lightworks". Sounds like it'll be a weird one, which is good news to me!

He seems to be working on so many things, but when he describes this:

Quote
the next album, unexpectedly, will be called ‘Lightwork’ and though it’s still being discovered, it’s a weird, alien sounding, effervescent , sunny load of oddness...

doesn't really get me excited sadly. More power to him with going with the flow, but I know sometimes his flow does not flow with me. Which is fine.

I am however really interesting in the new live album/dvd he's been working on.

Yea, that description just sounds like more of the few albums he did before the most recent. Seemed big with the fans, but didn't do much for me.

But with Devin, he always gets the benefit of the doubt and I will at least check out whatever he does.

If you're talking about Epicloud through Transcendence, I think this tweet here largely suggests that's exactly what he's trying to avoid:
Quote
It’s strange, abstract, meandering, and weird. If I try to curb it and write something more disciplined, it would be a dumb rehash of stuff I’m clearly bored of. So I follow this where it wants to go...

Here's the tweet thread for those interested

I really liked that!

I'm glad this is largely devoid of the wall of sound that he brings with him live. The last few live releases, while fun, have been so dense and thick with backing tracks that it's hard to even know what the band is doing. So this was a breath of fresh air. It's given some space to breathe and the actual band gets more opportunity to shine.

Yup, he specifically stated he wanted to avoid all backing tracks live and this end result is fantastic.  Sounds great.  That drum sound is awesome, plus all the backing vocals.  Oh, and hey we can hear Diego!  :lol

Pre-orders are now available here:
https://www.omerch.com/shop/devintown...
https://Devin-Townsend.lnk.to/EmpathL...

"Here is the first song we’ve chosen to release from the upcoming DVD concert, ‘Order Of Magnitude’ which was the first volume of my Empath touring band cycle. This particular band consisted of ten people on stage, all without click tracks or backing tracks, with the aim of reproducing my work in a new and creative way. A lot of what I’ve done in the past has been very structured, and the opportunity to interpret the music with high degrees of improvisation and flow was a fantastic experience.

This song, ‘Genesis’ from my latest album ‘Empath’ seemed an appropriate way to introduce this concert to the audience. It’s kind of an example of ‘musical anarchy’ in some ways- as the song is all over the place structurally to begin with. But to have a chaotic piece of music, played by these extraordinary musicians I had the honour of being with, in a no-holds-barred
production was really cathartic. It was about being free to do whatever we wanted in a time where rigid ideas of what is acceptable or not are stronger than ever.

I hope you enjoy it. Volume 2 is next and is in a lot of ways the polar opposite to this, but on my journey of musical exploration, I am grateful for all of it, so thanks again for the support.”

Hey all, onward into the unknown, it’s time for preparation of the quarantine concert number 5, ‘Rarities By Request’ ...this one will be held on Saturday, October 31st, and will be yet another experiment in trying to bring some live performance into your lives during these times 🙂 for this one, I will be performing in a very interesting way, rare songs from my catalogue. Songs I’ve been asked to play for years but for the most part have never done so. Pick ten of these and I'll play whatever the final results will be!

That's pretty cool. It's actually crazy how little of his own catalog he actually plays. Why keep releasing shit if you're just going to play the same songs every time?

HAHA....Ooops...

I was looking at the sets from the shows I went to, and glanced at the framed Set-list I got from a Meet and Greet package...

I saw Midnight Sun live already and voted for it... :loser:

It's why I didn't vote for A New Reign either.

Oh well... :lol :lol :lol

Edit: And I also just discovered this little gem.

Accelerated Evolution is a grossly underrated album. In my opinion, it's one of the most well-put-together albums of all time.

:rollin I just googled "devin townsend AAA" because I wasn't sure what the reference was.  But apparently that's a Slapping Young Lad song that I'm not familiar with... and I can see where this question comes from.  The guitar sounds like the same riff from Paralyzed.

It's a bit similar, but not really. Just some palm-muted riffing on the lowest string. I highly doubt it isn't a coincidence.

Yea I'm not really sure Dream Theater get their inspiration from Strapping Young Lad, it sounds similar but I personally wouldn't believe that's where they got the idea from.

I think it’s mostly the tone. Whilst guitar tone playing a generic mid tempo palm mute riff. That’s about it.

Also, might be a dumb question, but did he ever release that "live" thing where everyone filmed separately in quarantine but it was edited together? I lost track of it.

Sorry to return to the previous conversation, but if you want an actual case of a different band "taking inspiration from" a SYL riff, look no further than Machine Head's Beyond The Pale: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVdflCH76t4 :rollin

That was fantastic...I really like how Che' adds to the song with her voice and style thrown in there.

I am now really anticipating this release, as it's a live release with NO BACKING TRACKS  :eek This video shows just how powerful playing all the sounds live has. Most bands would be this big if they were to do that. And it's neat seeing groups actually taking that into consideration in their lineups.

Yeah, when I saw Devin back in March (thankfully right before all the shows got cancelled) it was probably the best show of his I've ever been to, and I think the lack of backing tracks was a big part of that.

Really unfortunate it got cut short. I didn't know at the time, why Devin got a big band like that together.  Or else I would have myself a denver ticket.

It will be hard to top the progpower show with annexe as my favorite show of his ive attended, but the two I got in before the covid lock were his next best and he didn't even tour the US with the full band you see in this new live album. Im so pumped for it.

I know its months after the release...Just felt the need to say how much I LOVE Devin's version of the Vengaboys "We like to Party (in Isolation)"... It's just like the perfect culmination of ridiculousness of Devin and the craziness of 2020. I never really cared or listened much to the original version of the song but something about having Devin as Ziltoid and Ché and Anneke together doing such a silly/fun song it just makes me happy and smile big.
