Just curious, how many times have you listened to Terria?

About 5 or 6 I guess.

I thought I had seen anything.

Then I saw Devlab above Terria.

The first stuff that clicked was the ambient stuff, and I get the fact that the first couple of minutes of Devlab is difficult to get through, but especially the second half is just wonderful.

The bonus tracks, absolutely.  Juno, Ho Krll, Radial Highway, Watch You and Traestorz are all major keepers.

The demos, meh.

Agreed, but even further – I love that whole disc. The only one that is "meh" for me is the "Fucker" rework.

I love the Decon "demos" (they were recorded in the album sessions with Dirk Verbeuren, just left off) like "Madd at My Dadd" and "Brownman" but mostly because they're hilarious.

Also check out "Dinosaurs" from the 7" that came with it. Interesting Addicted outtake with Anneke and sax.

Dinosaurs is so great, but other than that decent-sounding rip on YouTube, good luck finding it.  Still annoys me that I cannot find a high-quality rip of it. :censored :censored

From Dev's Twitter:

Quote
ok, I got the go ahead to do a second 'bonus disk' of material for Transcendence! Sweet..plus anothr 6 tracks for itunes etc. Great to purge

Quote
...The main disk was whittled down to 11 really really good songs.

Quote
theres a total of 33 songs this time around I think, then I can get on to touring and doing the symphony...

Transcendence is to start recording within a week!!!  (insert appropriate meme)  :yarr

I'm a little worried it'll be another Epicloud/Skyblue album.

It's a fine sound, but Devy seems a little too comfortable with it, and it's lacking that.....I don't know...internal conflict that made his work so great. Devy needs to be challenged, and as demonstrated by his live stream song writing (really cool by the way) he just isn't terribly challenged by this new sound and it comes super natural to him. I dunno, just doesn't seem as exciting.

Maybe because I am a new fan so I listened to Sky Blue and Epicloud before listening to some of the back catalogue, but I prefer the sound of those two albums versus some of the older stuff.

I love both Epicloud and Sky Blue, but I agree that it's getting a little bit too safe. The "Stars" or whatever song he wrote during the livestream was incredibly bad imo. He seems to be going for that commercial sound right now and that's okay, but I would love another album in the veins of Ghost or Deconstruction.

Part of what makes me a DT fan is that everything he does is different, but lately he has been sort of going in one direction. I really hope he doesn't get stuck in a rut with one sound.

I think the DTP has become his main outlet for his typical Pop/Metal kind of stuff, and any other experimental projects like Casualties will be done under a different project/name. For Dave, RVP, Mike, and Beav, the DTP is their main job so it has to be Dev's main focus as well. That's why he didn't take that hiatus he was talking about last year, because he's got 4 other guys in the band plus a live crew to pay.

I'm sure Transcendence will be my AOTY, but I do wish he'd do something different soon, like another Casualties record or maybe resurrect Ghost 2.

He's mentioned several other projects over the years like Obviouser, an Electronic album and of course the Symphony(Moth) which he says will be his main focus after Transcendence.

Recording for Transcendence starts tomorrow. Considering how long they've been practicing this material ahead of time, I don't expect them to take very long.
And according to his Twitter, Nolly from Periphery is helping them out in the studio.

Oh man if they get Periphery-level production on the album it's gonna sound awesome.

Agreed, but the only way it'll make a difference in the end is if Dev spends way longer mixing and probably with someone else (or letting someone else mix it... like, say, Jens Bogren!). I doubt that will happen.

Then again, he mixed the lion's share of Infinity, which is great minus the weird bass end (all kick, no bass guitar). He learned the bass lesson when doing Z2 so perhaps he would indeed be capable with engineering assistance.

The winning team on Infinity was Dev with Matteo Caratozzolo and Pete Wonsiak, who he hasn't worked much with since.

(And I've seen lots of people complain about the Infinity mix, so I hardly mean to call it definitive. It's definitely one of his clearest mixing jobs, though.)

I thought the recent Devin Townsend albums were really well produced though. I don't see a noticable difference in the production quality between P1 / Juggernaut and Addicted / Z2

Addicted sounds awesome (it's also not a recent album by any means btw), but Epicloud suffes from a lack of cymbals and Sky Blue/Z2 just sound weird to my ears.

I don't think I've ever had a problem with the production of a Devin album, but then I've been known to have ridiculously low standards in that area (something that I'm actually grateful for, to be honest). I mean, I do notice differences, but the albums - not just Devin, speaking about all the albums that I know - that have been negatively impacted for me because of production, I can count on two hands.

They're recording at the same studio where Synchestra and Alien were recorded. Both of those album had pretty great sounding production, especially the drums.
So that along with Nolly being there assures me that this album will be pretty great production-wise.

I think Addicted sounds good apart from the cymbals, which get a bit lost in the mix. Agreed on the rest, although Dark Matters sounds a bit better than the rest.

Norway Jose is my least favourite song off the EP and the vocals didn't add much for me to enjoy I feel. Devy should have done Harrison Fjord (though I guess that song already has too much going on, the chorus could have been amazing though).

I'll check it sometime. The instrumental part of Feed the Wolf (so basically Norway Jose) seemed quite interesting and creative.
