I think I've figured out why I'm disappointed by Sky Blue after many listens.

I think the choruses to most of the songs are great and really catchy.  But the verses are not melodic.  They have these weird non-standard melodic "lines" if you can even call them that.  Take the second verse of the title track ("Do what you want to....").  Ugh, that is just so painful to listen to.  That one's not even a melody because it's just sitting on the same note over and over.  (I love the chorus to that song though.)  But even the better songs on the disc, it just feels like Devin didn't take the time to construct good verses.  So I can't really sit down and enjoy any of the songs all the way through because it's painful to get through the verses.

Can't say I really agree with you there. Yeah, the choruses are usually a lot more melodic than the verses, but that doesn't mean there aren't some great verses on the album (Midnight Sun, Rain City, the previously mentioned Sky Blue...)

The only song where the vocal melodies really bother me is A New Reign, which is why that song is one of my least favorites on the album. I don't know, they just seem too loose and awkwardly phrased, with no special melody to them.

The wierd thing about A New Reign is that its almost like there is no verse.
The structure is like: Intro-PreChorus-Chorus-PreChorus-Chorus-Intro Revisited-Bridge-Intro Melody again-Chorus/End.

Like, where are the verses? :lol
Even so, its a very powerful song, lyrically and musically, and my personal favorite on Z2.

Yeah, I noticed that too. :lol I don't know, I just don't like the vocals on that song much, and since they're focused on so much it hurts the track pretty badly for me.

I thought the same at first, it's an odd sounding song given the structure. I really love it now and it's top-tier for me, to be sure. I especially love the lines of "Yet here we are again" (Or just "Yet here we are", at the end of the song). I'm finding that this record, for me, is much less of a 'chore' (for a horrible lack of words) to get through than other albums of his. It's very accessible, I'd say more so than even Addicted! or Epicloud (at least Sky Blue, not so much for Dark Matters). That said, I still find a considerable amount of depth to the lyrics and the music itself without it being overwhelming. Then again, I'm apparently much more open to Devy's sound and production than most, so the whole 'wall of sound' or 'dominating choir' doesn't affect me in the slightest and I simply view it as part of the album's personality, so for me that takes away a lot of the problems many people have right there.

I think I'm at a point where it'll stick, and it's still at the same 'not the best Devy album, but still awesomely awesome'.

The only thing about A New Reign that I dont get is the end, during the ambience when he says "peppermint gum, peppermint gum, peppermint gum, all-brown flag".

As a casual Devin fan, I'm really liking Sky Blue.  The title track is amazing.

Also I got Casualties of Cool recently and I'd say I'm enjoying it more than Z2 as of now.
Flight and The Bridge are both amazing, I enjoy practically every song though. Expected to like it but didn't expect to like it quite this much, haha.

that's actually one of the ones i found really forced, like most of the narrator's attempts at comedy (there aren't many, of course, and that's great).

my highlight will forever be Ziltoid in TTW: "oh, so lame!" - then hilariously and horribly singing the song they knew as kids!

I think it's made slightly funnier by the fact that it's not even written in the lyric booklet. Maybe it's something the narrator ad-libbed on the spot. :lol

My highlights are

"you see (with vibrato) you shall follow, FOR I'M YOUR QUEEN" (Dominique is incredibly awesome, and incredibly good looking too.)

"My brothaaa"

and

I would comment on it, but I havent had the time to write up an elaborate in-depth fangasm explanation on just how awesome RVP's drumming is. Definite highlight for drums would be Zildoidian Empire and Earth. And also Z2 has some awesome parts. Sick fills all over.

You could try the leaked promo version, it's an "unfinished" master with less dynamics compression. Sounds way better than the CD IMO.

So yeah, Sky Blue is definitely in the top half of Devin's discog - it keeps improving with every listen. The only songs that I'm still not really sold on are The Ones Who Love (though it does work as an outro, just not as an individual song, but then I suppose it's not supposed to?) and Rain City.

Dark Matters, however, has left me cold. March of the Poozers is awesome, Deathray and War Princess are great, the rest I can take or leave. It's better than the original Ziltoid, but not by much, and the good songs on Ziltoid absolutely destroy everything on this album that isn't March of the Poozers.

Also, Justin, can we look forward to another write-up in the Devin discography thread?

Listened to Z2 a bunch of times.

It's fun Pop music (Sky Blue), but I just don't care anymore for that overproduced, safe production. Nothing stands out.. it's all just one big gooey mess to my ears.

Addicted somehow managed to have a smashing sound, even with its heavy compressed sound.

As for Dark Matters.. I'll hold off on judgement. Too much going on.

I'm loving Sky Blue so far.  Just one great song after another.  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

I'll give Dark Matters more attention eventually, but given that they are basically two separate studio albums, trying to get into both at once is not something I am gonna do, especially since I have other new stuff I am digging and not as much music listening time as I normally do lately.

Seeing him tomorrow. Super psyched.

I have a quick question.

Unfortunately, because of being busy at school, I haven't had a ton of time to listen to the new album and was wondering about a difference between the leak and the actual version.

I vaguely remember the leak having some sort of preface that discussed how Ziltoid—who was apparently a figment of the imagination of a coffee house worker—was somehow real/alive/whatever. The new version does not have that. Was I dreaming? Am I missing something?

I went back and checked, and you're right. It's around the 3 minute mark in the opening track on the leaked version, but not on the official version.

Hrm? Damn, maybe I got a 'pre-final' leak (mine even has the Devy-centric Fallout so I know it's not the final version, it also has the different mastering to the final version). I've got both the leak and the official digipak but my leak doesn't have anything about that on Z2. Now, on From Sleep Awake, on both of my versions, coincidentally around 2:50-ish the narrator mentions that there's a revelation that Ziltoid is from another planet, but nothing about a 'dream from a coffee house worker' or anything of the sort on either version. Anyone care to be more specific and give precise times and/or a direct quote? This is intriguing.

Oh, that's it? That's boring. I thought it was an actual describing how it was the case. I only listened to the leak once and I was close to falling asleep because I'd gotten like no sleep the night before.
