It's just not a Ziltoid album without that nonsensical, silly story I feel. Couldn't listen to the album without it.

I prefer to not view it as a Ziltoid album anyway - to me, it's just a great collection of songs demonstrating Devin's heavier side, really - so I think that we actually agree there.

Guys, I'm sorry but I can't seem to figure out who is the bald and bearded guy in the artwork of Dark Matters. I mean the one where they're against DTP.

This. Who the heck is that guy? I thought maybe it was the Beav before he shaved. Maybe its the guy who does the narration?

i thought it was Beav pre-shave too, because that is exactly what he and Dev would do!

I think its one of the actors. Either the poozer, planet smasher, or Sheldon.

Yeah, but the story is silly and not all that engaging, I feel.

I love it. I was totally engaged from start to finish, rushed exposition climax and all.  :lol

Sky Blue ranking:

A New Reign
Midnight Sun
Forever
Rain City
Universal Flame
Before We Die
Sky Blue
Rejoice
Warrior
Fallout
Silent Militia
The Ones Who Love

The album has definitely grown on me. I had to adjust the EQ mix on it for it's glory to shine on me though. Cut the Mids down to -12, mid-highs and mid-lows to -4.2 each, left the highs and lows alone. Makes the album sound absolutely glorious to my ears with a pair of Skullcandy headphones. The music really benefits.

I was listening to Mighty Masturbator just now, and I noticed that the riff starting at 11:23(WE PRAISE OURSELVES...) is the same riff as the outro to By Your Command(Pound pound pound ye pushy push pound pound..) just slowed down a bit.

3 years later, I'm still noticing more little details in this album. Devy is truly a musical god.

Midnight Sun

still not that accurate tbh.

Dark Matters:

Deathray
From Sleep Awake
March of the Poozers

noticing this, the album really kind of loses me after March doesn't it, haha... more certain on these rankings though.

... whoa. i'd been wondering where that riff was coming from in the grand scheme of the connective tissue between sections. now it makes more sense! (sorta!)

wow, you're absolutely right, jesus christ.

also, I'm being insanely dumb not being able to remember this, what's the horn section at the start of Through The Wormhole from? (At around :10)
I know I recognize it and I'd guess it's from somewhere on Ziltoid 1 but I can't place it at all ???

If any of you guys are on Tumblr, I've started a new blog dedicated to discussing Devin's discography album by album. From Grey Skies to Sky Blue(hehe)

Already finished one writeup on Grey Skies. I'm hoping to update it at least 2 or 3 times a week.

Sky Blue ranking:

Warrior (DAT CHORUS)
A New Reign
Midnight Sun
Before We Die
Rejoice
Silent Militia
Fallout
Sky Blue
Universal Flame
Rain City
The Ones Who Love
Forever

Dark Matters ranking:

Ziltoid Goes Home (Best song on the album)
March of the Poozers
War Princess
....

The rest is a jumble, honestly.  Those 3 are the only ones that really stick out as awesome.

Yes, that's it. So ZTO is connected to Deconstruction, and Deconstruction is connected to Dark Matters. It's officially a chain now.

Could be. Based on my memory of that section, I think it might actually be from the last part of Poltergeist. There's one huge horn flourish and then the STAAAAAAAAAAAAND. It sounds kind of like that.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Sometimes when im listening to Sky Blue, I cant help but feel like ive heard some if these lyrics before on Casualties.
Am I crazy? Especially the part of the title track that goes "I have a fight and I have a right of way". I'm not sure where but I know I've heard that phrase before. I swear theres lots of links to Casualties on SB but i could just totally be wrong.

Completely is, but to me that part is nothing more than a homage; the rest is a bit too similar for me but without the 'drowning' production. It's a bit too open and free for me to be that similar to Ocean Machine. Plus any comparison to OM is gonna lose, in my ears; there's just no comparison to that album and there never fucking will be. It's too singular, too personal and hurtful and hopeful and helpful and 234958U234ROKAJDSFL;. It's perfection incarnate to me. Rain City is awesome but it's lower-tier on SB for me precisely because of the many callbacks and homages to OM; it seems to try a bit too hard in that regard, to me anyway. I like SB as a fusion of the song itself and The New Reign. TNR has this oddly beautiful melancholy while still being so wide open and hopeful and yet gets so dark in very small bits and pieces...while SB is just perfectly hopefully and poppy in all the right ways without being shallow. SB as an album is all of that to me with a few drawbacks here and there that keep it from being my consistent favorite. Well, overall...right now it's still all I'm listening to but even now as I'm listening to Regulator, I can see why OM will always be my favorite and why SB will just fall a tad bit short.

Just me, though. ALWAYS. WHO'S THE WEAKEST NOW? CAUGHT UP IN THE WIRE. I'M ALREADY GONE. WHO'S THE WEAKEST MEEEEEOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!?

DTP says "WOW, LOOK AT THAT GREAT POST"
RIP DTP.

I think I've figured out why I'm disappointed by Sky Blue after many listens.

I think the choruses to most of the songs are great and really catchy.  But the verses are not melodic.  They have these weird non-standard melodic "lines" if you can even call them that.  Take the second verse of the title track ("Do what you want to....").  Ugh, that is just so painful to listen to.  That one's not even a melody because it's just sitting on the same note over and over.  (I love the chorus to that song though.)  But even the better songs on the disc, it just feels like Devin didn't take the time to construct good verses.  So I can't really sit down and enjoy any of the songs all the way through because it's painful to get through the verses.

Can't say I really agree with you there. Yeah, the choruses are usually a lot more melodic than the verses, but that doesn't mean there aren't some great verses on the album (Midnight Sun, Rain City, the previously mentioned Sky Blue...)

The only song where the vocal melodies really bother me is A New Reign, which is why that song is one of my least favorites on the album. I don't know, they just seem too loose and awkwardly phrased, with no special melody to them.
