I didn't want a sequel. I liked the original Ziltoid but it clearly reflected a point in Devin's life and a sequel seemed really unnecessary. I still went into the album optimistic and was disappointed anyway. It's not just that it doesn't deliver as a sequel to an already mid tier Devin album, but it isn't up to the quality of at least 3/4's of his discography.

Agreed.

Fortunately, I have faith that he will rebound in a big way with Transcendence, which is only a little over a month away now!! :hat

I too didn't need a sequel to Ziltoid, and I love the original album. I had very low expectations for Sky Blue and Dark Matters and was still pretty let down.

However, unlike Kev, I don't have high hopes for Transcendence, just based on his musical trend as of late. I sure do hope I'm wrong though.

Well, Epicloud and Casualties of Cool were both pretty great, IMO, and while Dark Matters was largely disappointing, Sky Blue was still quite good, even if was a "by the numbers Devin and Anneke" record.  Plus, I remember him saying that the record company kind of pressured him to release something in the vein of Addicted and Epicloud again since they wanted more than just the Ziltoid sequel, making me think Sky Blue wasn't that inspired in general, but something he felt like he had to do to make others happy, and artists are always happier, and more inspired, when writing stuff for themselves, and I get the impression that the forthcoming album was like that again, so I think good thing are a-coming. :coolio

It's ironic because Sky Blue felt way more natural and inspired to me than Dark Matters. Overall it was a really good album.

My expectations for Transcendence are low because I feel that the Addicted/Epicloud sort of sound is genuinely what Devin wants to do right now. I think it's just an added benefit that it happens to be financially lucrative (at least as lucrative as someone like Devin can be). I'm sure it's something I'll enjoy because I've enjoyed every album in that style, but it probably won't reach the heights of his best albums either.

I doubt he will ever equal or top Terria, and for me, it will be very difficult to top Addicted as well, but a mid-tier Devin album is still pretty freaking awesome, and given the style of music he has written on the previous albums with Anneke, I am sure this new one will be right in my wheelhouse.

Decided on the first track we release, it'll be the song 'Failure' It's slower and fairly basic, then we'll follow up with something complex

Then we release a video. I'd say this week there should be something? Or early next week... I'll be doing a Facebook live q&a as well

sounds pretty good to me.  I think (hope) it will sound better in the context of the album.  this is way more up my alley than Dark Matters.

A couple of commenters have suggested a similarity to the vibe/style of Synchestra, and I can kind of see that. It's really nice stuff - much more delicate than a lot of his most recent output. I wonder if that represents the album.

It's alright, but I'm not sure it was the best choice for a first single. I'm sure it'll sound better within the context of the album.
I am getting kind of a Synchestra vibe, and the main 7-String riff reminds me of Planet of the Apes.
I think that might be Devin's best Solo since Deep Peace.

One highlight is the production. We can finally hear Ryan's cymbals  :metal

I also immediately identified the Planet of the Apes riff similarity. The production is very good. In most albums I think Devin vocals are too low and get kind of lost in the instrumentation.

I liked the song.

well, according to his own tweets, this should be one of the slower and more basic songs on the album.  that's promising that he thinks the other stuff is more upbeat and complex.

I also heard the Planet of the Apes similarities. It's cool though, it's different from anything on Z2. It sounds fresh.

Really cool, and doesn't feel reminiscent of Sky Blue or Epicloud.

Anytime Dev ever uses a djent riff ever again, it will always recall Planet of the Apes. He's just kinda cursed by having it introduced to his style in that song first – if it were used in Stand instead, we'd say Failure reminds us of Stand.

And are you forgetting the solo in Suicide?!

How are you people not liking this? This is probably the best Devin track since Deconstruction.
Also, the production makes me wet.

It's a fantastic song and the chorus is the most beautiful chorus I've ever heard from Devin, wow. Hyped for this album.
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Not too shabby. Good simple song to show off the vibes and tones of the album. Or course that Riff is gonna sound like Planet of The Apes because that's the djent meshuggah rip-off tone.

I thought it was pretty awesome and a nice change of pace. It's definitely not anything like he's done the past couple albums. I was actually kind of reminded of Joe Satriani during that solo, which I love. Also loving the production; while I haven't had a problem with it in the past, it's not so much as it was the past few albums while still having that "big" sound Devy is so fond of. Overall I really, really liked it and it was a nice fire starter for the coming of the album.

ED: Completely forgot about Nolly producing the album. Yeah, he needs to keep him if this is any indication of the rest of the album. Nolly retainer.
