That is cool to hear. I don't really know anything about Vai's music but this should be interesting.

Fully agreed. I think it's maybe my favourite Devin song and probably in my top 5 favourite songs ever.

RAH was an amazing spectacle and holy shit it fucking rocketed my appreciation for TDOM so fucking much; dramatically. That was really powerful and it was really nice to be able to actually understand the lyrics. I really don't like the production on that song, weirdly enough; even less so now that I've heard this and know that the lyrics can be said in a powerful way.

Dark Matters was also epic as all hell and I really enjoyed that a lot more than the album itself. I haven't jumped on the bandwagon hate/dislike/indifference yet (mostly lolhate it seems, which is fine) but it's lower-tier Townsend for me, then again so is the original Ziltoid. But the concert version is infinitely better, I think and again made my appreciation for it jump immensely.

Truly a legendary performance all around.

Despite me being an obvious Hevydevy worshiper, it's really hard to make an accurate list without having a good long think about it.

I'd say though, his masterpieces (in no specific order) are:

Ocean Machine
ZTO
Casualties
Deconstruction
Infinity
Ghost/Ki
But then Dark Matters is really enjoyable....

I'll give my list a think  ???

Yeah I love Ziltoid but I didn't think Dark Matters was anywhere near as good.

But then  it was written from a completely different perspective from the first one. Also, the first was obviously more complex musically and dynamically but I thoroughly enjoy both.

Casual reminder that Casualties of Cool is fuckin' cool

We need another album in that style already.

I made a mix of my favourites in this vein:
01. Trainfire
02. Feather (first part)
03. Fly
04. Flight
05. Blackberry
06. Winter
07. Mountaintop
08. Kawaii
09. Watch You
10. Ain't Never Gonna Win
11. Radial Highway
12. Heatwave
13. Ghost
14. The Code
15. Daddy
16. Ki (first part)
17. Moon (w/short Pier)
18. Drench
19. Forgive Me
20. A Monday / Feather (coda)

Runs really smoothly, especially where the Flight/Code and Ghost/Blackberry transitions use the same frog ambience.

That looks like an awesome playlist, Season. I did something similar when Casualties first came out but not as smooth as that. I'll hafta try it out sometime. The only thing I might add is Where You've Been; that might be my favorite off the bonus disc...it's quite calming and still hauntingly beautiful.

I love Casualties so damn much, and with the extras that came with the pledge stuff and the 'real' version, it plays even better with a few simple tweaks. Surprisingly so, to my ears.

I still listen to Thing and wonder how the fuck that came out of these sessions. Such an awesomely broo0ootal song. But I love the mellow stuff a lot more.

The back half of Ki would stick out like a sore thumb in this mix, so I didn't see much choice there. And I suppose the decision about Feather was that I find the song horribly bloated unless I'm not sober  :lol

Definitely need to make a pt. 2. Besides all the great stuff on the Casualties bonus disc, there's other material from Ki and Ghost I love a lot that didn't fit. Plus little bits from other places, like Noisy Pink Bubbles and Sister, the rest of Ghost 2, et al.

Did you try the "extended" Casualties disc 1 that came on the USB stick? Kinda wish he'd used that and left off some of the excessive sonic buggery in stuff like The Field, Deathscope, and Pure. Not knocking them, just saying they go on forever without needing to.

I imagine I like Devin a little differently than most of you...

I want his overwhelming Wall of sound Pop-Metal ultra massive catchy grooves in every song he writes.  AE gives me the most of it while Ghost the least.

Interesting! Cool stuff. I don't ever rate albums and this thought/trend started with Devy because on some days, Ocean Machine will be my absolute favorite and last for a week, then Casualties of Cool will by my end-all favorite and love it more than anything for a month, and then I'll listen to Sky Blue and think that nothing will ever top it and that'll last for four days after which Deconstruction will be my tip-top uber fav and so on and so forth.  :lol

But I love that, literally all his albums are my favorite at some point in time and that is pretty much how it is with all my 'too addicted for my own good' favorite bands.

So this may be an odd question and maybe not even a good question to ask, but I am curious so here it goes.

So Devin is bipolar right?  I was watching some of the new DVD on youtube (I am waiting for the blu ray to purchase) and he kind of just talks to himself.  He is talking about something and then stops and tells himself to get on with the show.  Kind of an odd moment.  He did something similar on the Retinal Circus DVD and didn't think too much of it, but this instance was a bit more.  Was wondering if that was his bipolar?  I don't know anyone who is bipolar so I don't have a good understanding of it and I really do not want to come off as offensive in the quesion, I am just curious.  I read about him on wikipedia, that's how I know he is bipolar.

That's just Dev's quirkiness and still-somewhat-the-awkward-high-school-kid-at-heart-ness. I love that about the dude. Totally confident one moment and then talking about his own habitual idiosyncrasies that he's a bit uncomfortable with to a crowd of thousands that worships the ground he walks on.

Bipolar disorder more than likely has nothing to do with that, although I suppose you could stretch it to relate in some way. An affect of bipolar disorder would be that he's happy-go-lucky, talking about good times one moment and then the next he says "Fuck this shit, this gig sucks!". I mean...of course there are any number of examples and any number of ways it can affect one's personality but I don't think that is one of them. This coming from a bipolar psychotic in case anyone thinks I'm talking out my ass but with my posts throughout the years...I don't think that's going to happen...  :millahhhh

Ed after Metro ninja'd me: Hilariously and yet amazingly relatable is that once I got sober, even though I'm still fairly young in my sobriety, my symptoms have pretty much been nil as well. It was almost immediate.

Cool, thanks for explaining.  He seems like an awesome guy from watching his videos and comes off very genuine and since he seemed so genuinely to be talking to himself I was wondering what that was about.  I have no problems with it or anything, just as I listen to more of his music and get more interested I start to wonder more about how all that works.  It's amazing to me.  I have a lot of respect for the guy and the more I get to know, the more I respect.

Honestly, I think switching into Performance Mode is completely heightened by his bipolar disorder, and potentially that is how it manifests now. If you do a meet and greet or see his interview videos or whatever, you'll see how grounded, mellow, and quiet he is normally, but it's the total opposite when he is on stage. I met him for a VIP thing on tour and it was seriously like he had just hit the bong (no, I am aware he didn't for real!) he was so nerdy and mellow.

He is mellow and laid back. Isnt a snob either and is down to talk aboit whatever. He signed my Epicloud bear. and was glad, i dont think hes seen one of them at all. Thats why i appreciate him as a person, which shows in his music.
