Interesting take. You use the idea that because it has a similar approach to other albums of the same 'era', it absolutely cannot be a Ziltoid album. Clearly you're slighted/offended by the albums and they're not for you...but to outright say that DM is not a Ziltoid album because you think that a Ziltoid album should be/sound a certain way is kind of ridiculous. It's definitely a Ziltoid album through and through, given that the guy that created it made it as such. Now, if Devy came out and created a St. Anger-esque album and slapped the name of Ziltoid on it without the character's name being so much as mentioned, I'd be right there with you.

Perhaps I'm taking the comment the wrong way. It's pretty clear you don't like what direction the band headed in. Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing either way; I couldn't care less whether the album is universally flamed (  ;) ) or not... Still a Ziltoid album. Hell, while I wouldn't mind Transience sounding like the last string of albums, I'd prefer something different and out of left field. I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

The drums sound so fucking good considering it's a live release. Vocals are on point oo, just wish the guitars were a little more prominent.

I know it's a baritone 7 string but does Dev's guitar look huge to anyone else ?

Why in the world is so hard to find a decently priced copy of his blu-rays in the states?

The poozer video was great!

It is huge. It's this one, I think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-XhYBOthSw

I think he said in an interview that it's too big to be shipped during normal tours so he'd only use it on special occasions, or something along those lines.

Ha. I wondered who would want to buy all that and how much it must be and how many Framus made then I realised it's Dev's actual video.

So since the survivor had finished and I got into work today thinking I need to listen to something new, I figured let me spin a Devin album I have not yet heard, I pretty much started from his newer stuff and worked back, but decided based on the poll results to go with Ocean Machine today.  Having never heard the songs besides Life, I am really surprised by how good this album is.  I guess I shouldn't of been, but so far I have found most of his albums to often have at least a few songs that I find uninteresting or I find the album is inconsistent in terms of what I like.  I am on my 4th listen of this album so far am really liking it.  I will say this, why is The Death of Music so well liked?  This song just has not sunk in with me and its really the only track (its too new for me to pick out individual tracks just yet) that stuck out in a negative way.  Im thinking maybe I just don't get it and need more listens, but I am surprised this forum thinks its one of his best.

The Death of Music is just immensely evocative and emotional. If not for the kinda wimpy ending it'd be a perfect song.

Maybe I need to read the lyrics to get a better understanding, I figure there is more depth to this song that I am just not getting on first listens, but the music and mood itself is very different.

Well between the two of you (Scorpion and Parama) I think our music tastes are very different judging by this and the Nightwish survivor so I imagine that plays a role, but I understand The Death of Music is liked by more than just you too.  It was on his "by request" set list so there must be a large liking of that song.

For what it's worth, it's nowhere near one of my favorites. I like it in the concept of the album and it's a cool track, but I never listen to the song unless I just so happen to be listening to the album in full. Thing Beyond Things, even though it's a bonus track, will always be the 'real' ending to the album for me. That one is one of the rotating favorites for me. But Death is nothing more than a conceptual nod to the album in my eyes, I don't get it either. It's always like that for me though, I rarely have the same favorites as others even on this site.

Things Beyond Things is great too, aside from the scream. Really the last four tracks are probably the best run of Devin's entire discography.

I've said this before, but The Death Of Music is pretty much the only Devin song I can think of where the mixing significantly hurts my enjoyment of the song. It's such a vocals-centered song, yet the vocals are so damn quiet. The mixing of the strings and synths during the climactic parts is also really hazy and smothered-sounding, which really takes away from the power and intensity that those sections should have. I don't know, it just really bothers me. I love the melodies, the atmosphere, and the the emotional intensity that the song is going for, but the mixing ruins it for me, unfortunately. I'm kind of curious to hear what the version on the upcoming RAH DVD sounds like.

Huh. As someone who is generally somewhat picky about mixing (see my roulette comments ahah) I don't have any problem with how it's mixed, never did either.

I think the course of the album is pretty clearly ending up below the waves at this point, and a lot of the vocals are whispered. By the time he starts singing, he's just as far forward (or not) as on the rest of the record. Every word is clearly audible. Obviously he has an amazing voice but the sound of the record is partially from his vocals being on equal footing with the music. Change that on the last (non-bonus demo) song and it wouldn't make sense. Also, I'd argue this is built to be a headphones song, and that's where you hear him clearest.

Either way, I suspect the RAH bluray brings his vocals further forward!

I don't really agree with that at all. But hey, whatever.
My ear for mixing has changed many times throughout the years, maybe I'll listen to the song ten years down the line and it'll sound perfectly fine to me. :lol

I hear it differently now than I did when I first heard it in 2002, that's for sure. Also depends on what you're listening through, the format it's in, etc. etc. I don't mean to imply that you "hear it wrong" – that's not possible! – but that I hear consistency you don't, and the reasons for that are likely on both of us rather than just one. Different ears, y'know?

It's like "Noisy Pink Bubbles," "Forgotten," and "Humble," a sort of 'universal bonus track' on every version. It's a demo from his band Grey Skies, which is pre-OM (and pre-SYL). That's why he sounds noticeably younger.

The Death of Music took a long time to click with me. I'm not a big fan of OM as a whole, but whenever I listened to the album I just skipped the track until a few months back. Things Beyond Things is the real highlight of the album still, I find it incredibly emotional and it's a perfect album closer.
