It's funny, I have tried for the longest time to turn people on to Devy and have had very little luck, but I posted this "Quarantine" song on my Facebook yesterday and people went NUTS over it.

New quarantine project song: "Honeybunch"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLmVoiHJcdg&feature=youtu.be

This one's actually pretty great. Wouldn't mind it actually turning up on an album of his at some point.

QUARANTINE PROJECT Part 9: Heavy Factions

well, definitely the most heavy thing he's done during this quarantine project.  Samus on drums going wild too.

Quote
Heres a heavier demo idea. I recorded the drums with Samus during the Empath sessions. Liam plays bass and Wes does a ripping solo. Its all about balance I guess, sometimes chill, sometimes frantic. This would be ‘frantic’ =)

I hope you have a good weekend. Please take care of yourself and your loved ones. Dont let the stress get you down, try to write some music or make some art maybe this weekend?

...or cookies? They're good too...

Dev

Guitar Solo: Wes Hauch
Bass: Liam Wilson
Drums: 66Samus

Devin Townsend is pleased to announce the release of ‘Empath – The Ultimate Edition’ on June 5th, 2020. This comprehensive version of 2019’s acclaimed album contains the original record and bonus disc across 2 CD’s, plus 2 Blu-Ray discs. The first blu-ray contains the 5.1 Surround Sound mix by Devin, with visuals for the full record, plus a stereo visualiser. The second blu-ray contains a raft of bonus material, including ‘Acoustically Inclined – Live in Leeds’, a recording from his April 2019 acoustic tour where he performed tracks including ‘Love?’, ‘Deadhead’, ‘Thing Beyond Things’ & more.

It also features the full Empath Documentary, a ‘Genesis 5.1 Mixing Lesson’, a full album commentary & more. The four discs sit inside a beautiful art-book that contains new liner notes and images from the making of the album.

Devin comments of the new 5.1 surround sound mix:
“On a technical level, I guess I have always been dissatisfied with the basic ‘stereo’ format in which the type of music I make gets presented in. Whether its headphones, computer speakers, stereos (or basically anything currently), I have had to figure out ways to get the work to function through TWO speakers. I hear things in a particularly orchestrated way, and with the amount of information that typically gets recorded per song, the result has been the dubious ‘wall of sound’ that I keep ending up with. But my intention has never been to make an oppressive experience, but rather something that is immersive and vast.

Making it work in two speakers just simply doesn't quite work for the vision. Although I’ve managed to get the point across, (to varying degrees), things always have to compromise to make it all fit. Making the drums speak at the same time as orchestra, cymbals, guitars, choirs, synths etc.…all with my voice on top, ends up with every conceivable frequency fighting for breathing space between those two speakers.

Therefore, I asked the powers that be in my business world, to tolerate one more ‘kick at the can’ when it came to Empath. I wanted to attempt a surround mix and follow the original vision of it being an immersive, multimedia experience for people in the ways I could best achieve at this stage. And although it’s still pretty ‘dense’, with four more sources for the sound to come from, I feel its significantly closer to the original vision here.”

Pre-orders are now available here:

Devin will head out on a Summer festival run mixed with club shows in Europe, which includes a headline appearance at Bloodstock Festival in the UK.

I have no idea what song it was, or whether it was part of some bigger discussion, but I was not a fan of him for a LONG time, and I saw a YooToob video of him writing/constructing a song, and it was very impressive (and depressing; he made it look so easy).   Watching many bands create is boring AF, but I didn't even like the guy's music at that point and it was still a treat to watch.

He streams on twitch most days now, he changes it up, yesterday was just playing guitar and singing and chatting.  But he's recently also been working on new music or remixes, watching him do it is pretty impressive but he's also constantly talking about it and to people in the chatroom.  He's got a great natural instinct on being entertaining while also showing off the whole writing and mixing side of things.

Ugh. I would rather Devin save the toilet humor for outtakes and live streams.  When he puts it in real songs, it never ages well.  The song Deconstruction is quite good, but the couple of farts he put in the song sound so stupid.  I get that it's the Zappa part of his personality, to where anything including the kitchen sink is worth putting in a song, but it just doesn't come off well.  And I say that as a huge fan.

I don't think it made the final cut, he only did it because people happened to notice the fart folder in the background on his PC and kept asking about it and asking to put one in the song.  And in seriousness, I don't want farts in my music either but there's a time and place.  Throwing it around for fun when interacting with people seems like a good way to share some humor and specifically seems right up Devin's alley.

Not having seen the video, do they show up as fart sounds, though?  You could manipulate that into 100 different permutations, many of which could be cool.   Eddie VH made a car horn sound cool.   And an electric drill.

It's not in the video and in this case, if I recall, it was a straight up fart sound he inserted at a point in the music to make it "fit" in. It was all in fun. He did motify some things with volume but I don't recall him actually manipulating the sound in any meaningful way.

Devin's doing some podcasts now where he talks about his past albums in-depth for over an hour, going over the history behind them and giving a track-by-track rundown. He's done Ocean Machine and City so far, and they're fantastic. Dude's an amazing storyteller; I'd recommend listening to them even if you're a casual fan who's not too familiar with those albums.

I listened to about half of ocean machine and it's really in depth.  Gives a real good insight into the music business and Devin is just like a natural with talking about it.

The podcasts are great. Such a great, frank bloke. Amazed how much stuff he's done and is doing in this lockdown (three online gigs coming up).

Be nice to see Maiden and DT do something. Also saw great stuff by Baroness and Chvrches.

Back to Dev's music, Empath has firmly stayed at the top of my favourites of his after getting it around the start of this year. Incredible simultaneous variation and cohesion.

Kind of surprised some of the bigger bands aren't doing anything but maybe that's because financially they are OK through this, but you see all the smaller bands do anything to get some money.  Would be nice to hear from the DT guys though.  Haken today did an online Q&A which was cool.  DT doing something similar from their homes would be a lot of fun.

Anyone know a good place to get the song Watch You? I had the mp3 back when Ghost 2 was a possibility (I guess that morphed into Casualties?) but I've lost it.

It's on one of the bonus discs of the Contain Us boxset. But as for legally downloading it individually the only thing I could find is the live version from the Ghost By A Thread performance.

Contain Us has some great songs. Been a while since I listened to them. I remember Traestorz being a fun listen (the middle was used for The Mighty Masturbator.

By Your Command is epic as fuck on this. I love the orchestras reactions to the ending. And Devin surprising the conductor.

The Orchestra really added a lot to these songs.
