30th Anniversary Show(s)
« on: October 31, 2014, 07:04:45 AM »
It would be great to see some 30th an.  An Evening With... shows so I thought when I was in a list writing mood I would come up with a setlist.
Rules I followed: At least one song from every album.
Around 2h 45m length.
No songs that the band have ever played live with Mangini. (I had to break this for an ADTOE song as they had already done all of them.)
Songs played in reverse album chronology.

Setlist:
Act I:
False Awakening Suite (Tape)
Behind The Veil
Lost Not Forgotten
-JLB addresses the crowd-
A Nightmare To Remember
In The Presence Of Enemies Pt.1
I Walk Beside You
In The Name Of God

Act II:
The Glass Prison
Home
New Millennium
Voices
Take The Time
The Killing Hand
Only A Matter Of Time

Encore:
A Change Of Seasons

(What did you expect for an encore?...)

Interesting idea when considering the rules. I'll take a jab at it:

(This is also assuming they don't drop an album next year)

Act I:
The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
Take the Time
Voices
Only A Matter of Time
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
A Nightmare to Remember
-----------------------
Act II:
In the Presence of Enemies, Pt. 1
Behind the Veil
Home, which slides into the first note of
Bridges in the Sky
Surrender to Reason
A Change of Seasons
-------------------------
Encore:
Octavarium
Pull Me Under/Metropolis (swap out each night, cuz they're not celebrating the band's 30th anniversary without one of those songs.)

Clocks in around 175 minutes, which is about 15 min longer than this past tour's setlist, which is doable.

posted this in another thread back in July, but it works here:

Set 1
False Awakening Suite (Intro Tape)
The Enemy Inside
The Bigger Picture
---JLB Hello---
Outcry
Wither
Repentance
Panic Attack
Stream of Consciousness

Set 2
The Great Debate
Through Her Eyes
Burning My Soul
Voices
Pull Me Under
Only a Matter of Time
---JLB Introduces Charie Dominici---
A Fortune in Lies (Charlie on Vocals)
Space-Dye Vest (w/ Kevin Moore on Keyboards, Charlie on Vocals) OR Eve (w/ Kevin Moore on keyboards)
Lines in the Sand (w/ Derek Sherinian on Keyboards, Charlie and James share Vocals)

---Encore 1---
The Best of Times (w/ Mike Portnoy on Drums, James and Mike share Vocals)

---Encore 2---
A Change of Seasons (w/ Charlie, Kev, Derek, and Mike)
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.
WELP.

James Hetfield and Mike Mangini?????
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces
