Favorite DT Bridges
« on: October 03, 2014, 09:43:17 AM »
As bridges go, Dream Theater can be pretty hit or miss. What do you think are the biggest hits? I included the complete list of what I consider to be DT bridges, but I included an "other" option if you think there's one I missed. I allowed up to 5 votes, but feel free to do fewer if you want to single out 2 or 3 favorites.

My votes go to:

Another Day
In the Name of God
These Walls
Wither
Along for the Ride

In The Sky.

I considered that, but didn't put it because it happens twice in the song, and I consider a bridge something that happens only once. Sort of an unfounded opinion, but it's what I used.

To me, the bridge bridges the gap (hence the name) between verse and chorus. The new idea that happens usually after the 2nd chorus is called the middle 8.

"Callow and vain" is my favorite "bridge" of all time.

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.

Isn't that a verse?

To me, the bridge bridges the gap (hence the name) between verse and chorus. The new idea that happens usually after the 2nd chorus is called the middle 8.

Interesting.

I usually considered the bridge as the part of the song which is typically different than the verse or chorus, commonly introduces some new chords (or different chord-order), usually happens after the 2nd chorus, and contains a build-up which goes back into a final chorus (or sometimes goes into a mellow breakdown similar to the song's intro).

The part in-between the verse and chorus, I always thought was the pre-chorus.

I will have to add middle-8 to my musical vocab though...always good to have another identification to things!

In The Sky.

That was the first thing popped in my head when I looked at the thread title. I laughed way too hard when I entered the thread and actually saw this first response.  :lol
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

If "Searching Out, Reaching In..." is considered the chorus to Breaking All Illusions, then "Live In The Moment, Breathe in a new Beginning" could be considered a bridge, yeah?

The arrangement of that song is so...not standard.

If it is indeed considered a bridge, and not a pre-chorus, then that is my vote.

Though I'm sure there are a ton of others I am just not thinking of.

Just realized I forgot about Trial of Tears (5:31).

I'm not going to edit the poll, but I wanted to point that one out.

I'm not sure I can really pick a favorite, but what about Beneath the Surface "I would scream just to be heard..."? For me it's probably that, Far From Heaven or Innocence Faded.

Didn't vote yet and didn't even realize I had five votes. I voted for the three aforementioned plus In the Name of God and The Ministry of Lost Souls.

What's the distinction, exactly, between a Bridge and a Solo or Instrumental breakdown?

Short answer: that.
A bridge is a new lyrical section that typically leads into a solo/break section, depending on the song structure. The shorter DT songs on this list show the clearest examples of a bridge, if you check out the timestamps.

Not sure what my top 5 would be at the moment. So many good ones.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Wait, seriously? I was always a bit confused about bridges in general, but for some reason, I always thought they had to be instrumental. Huh... I learned something today.
