Shadow Ninja 2.0

FYI, Animals As Leaders is an all-instrumental band, so you're probably thinking of some other djenty group.

Ha I must be, I think it was Protest the Hero then

Sacul

Great you liked the DP song! Their debut is one of the best releases of this year so far  ;) .

lonestar

No shame in coming short to Pride by Mystery, that was one of my favorite songs from that year.

Damn, hard to believe we're on the final round already

ROUND 7 RESULTS

Shadow Ninja: Steam Powered Giraffe - Brass Goggles - This song was very hit and miss. The verses were just average, and didn't do much for me, but the chorus of "La da da da da" was really fun and catchy and I really enjoyed it. Nice swinging groove going on throughout, too. Lots of good things here, but as a whole it didn't really connect with me.
Grade: 6.5

Senecadawg: Voyager - The Morning Light - Wow. This song totally blew me away first listen. It's epic and catchy and heavy all at the same time. The vocals fit the song perfectly, and the occasional growl actually sounded really good. Quite possibly the best first impression of this entire roulette.
Grade: 9.5

Big Hath: Al Di Meola - Golden Dawn Suite - This is kind of sad, but I think its the first time I've ever heard Jaco on the bass. He's pretty incredible, and in my opinion, the driving force behind this song. There are some really cool guitar solos and the drumming is solid, but its hard to draw my attention away from those hot bass lines. Highlights for me were the slower section at 1:16 and 3:11 when the main bass groove starts. All in all it might be a tad too long, but certainly a great song to jam out to.
Grade: 7.5

GentlemanofDread: Hiromi's Sonicboom - Time Out - I found this to be quite similar to the previous song in style, and also in terms of my enjoyment. So much talent in this band on every instrument that it's hard to pick one that I would single out above the rest. The Piano solo was freaking incredible. Overall it was very impressive, and I think I might like it just a bit more than the previous song.
Grade: 8

Adace: The Sword - Eyes of the Stormwitch - This was quite the rockin tune. The main riff was very headbang-able (totally a word) and just catchy as hell. It was very short, but in a good way, in that there was no wasted time, and it never felt like it was getting old. The vocals were only average, but overall another very impressive song this round.
Grade: 7.5

Elite: Voyager - White Shadow - My expectations for this were probably a little too high after hearing Seneca's song, and although it was very good, it just didn't quite stand up to the other song. A little more of a power metal feel to this one, which admittedly isn't one of my favorite genres. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing it, because it was very good, but still somewhat disappointing after Seneca set the bar extremely high.
Grade: 7

Sacul: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Voodoo Von Amour - This was a very interesting blend of swing jazz with heavy metal guitars underneath, and I'm not exactly sure how I feel about that combination. It certainly made it sound unique, but it honestly never really clicked with me. Certainly not a bad song, but one I didn't particularly connect with.
Grade: 6.5

Tyrias: Foals - Providence - This was another one I just didn't connect with that much. Definitely had some things I liked: the drums beat was cool throughout, the heavy part at the end was pretty cool, and the guitar shined in places. The vocals weren't my favorite, and it was little too repetitive at times.
Grade: 6

Jingle: Uriah Heap - Easy Livin - I found this one to be somewhat similar to Adace's song, in that it was very short and sweet with no wasted space. Definitely a good tune to just chill to, and a great one for this particular theme. Oh, and there was no video in the clip, so not sure what you were concerned about :lol
Grade: 7

Mikemangioy: Destrage - Jades Place - Another Destrage song, and this one might have been my favorite. Very catchy riffs (especially the very beginning) and chorus. There are still some spots where the singer annoys me, but they were much more scarce this time around. And similar to a few others this round, I liked the brevity of it, as it never began to feel old.
Grade: 8

Lucien: Brian Bennett - Voyage - This song was very aptly named, as it definitely feels like a voyage. A great song to just close your eyes and drift off to, and the bass groove is really nice. My only complaints would be that you have to be in the right mindset to really "get" the song, and it was just a little too repetitive.
Grade: 7

Lonestar: The Helix Nebula - Sea of Sons - This was definitely up there in terms of best instrumentals I've gotten this roulette. The beginning might be my favorite part, as a really enjoyed the build up. Some of the transitions were a little choppy (something I find a lot in instrumental music), but for the most part this was really solid, and not much else to complain about on this one.
Grade: 7.5

It's been a blast guys, thanks for all the great things you've sent! For the FINAL ROUND, I'm going to leave it open, however I'm going to have you send me two songs, and I will only grade the one I like most. That way if you have a risky pick you can send it without hesitation. Hoping to hear some great stuff!  :metal

Back to my mediocrity.  :lol

Will ponder and send today.  Old-school prog was what I seemed to excel with, so I think I'll go with one of those, and then I'll pull a 'Costanza'.

To be honest I haven't heard too much before V, and that includes White Shadow. But it's hard for me to imagine liking any other Voyager song more than The Morning Light. Its fantastic! I'm glad Bombadil agrees  ;D

I'll send a couple others by the end of the day

Results for mine will probably be up Tuesday. Is one week and two days too long master jingle?

Yes, get the fuck on with it already.  You can't possibly have anything better to do.

I blame (the other) Rich for the holdup.

Not surprised I'm near the bottom at the end with the great songs everyone else sent in, but tied with jingle heading into the last round? I'll take that as a win.

Tom Bombadil

Ok, here we go guys.

Pretty short write-ups for these songs, because there's 24 of them, so gimme a break :lol

ROUND 8 RESULTS (Songs graded are in bold)

Shadow Ninja: Homestuck - Carne Vale - This was a really cool and interesting song. I liked the mixture of electronic drums and electric guitar. It also had a pretty nice groove going on throughout. A very fun to listen to song overall.
Modest Mouse - Parting of the Sensory - Not sure what it was about this one, but it really didn't do much for me. I think it was mostly the vocals that just really weren't my favorite.
Grade: 7

GentlemanofDread: The Prize Fighter Inferno - Run, Gunner Recall, Run! The Town Wants You Dead - This is another one of those that kind of falls into the good but nothing special category. Some of the guitar parts are really cool and impressive, but for the most part it was just average.
The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work - This would've been pretty perfect for the acoustic round, but it's a really good song regardless. Simple but beautiful. Great vocals too.
Grade: 7.5

Senecadawg2: Headspace - Daddy Fucking Loves You - The beginning of this song was so fantastic, and was pretty much everything I've ever wanted. The huge instrumental section was mostly good, although I'll admit a few wankery parts were a bit off-putting, but that's to be expected. The vocalist was fantastic. And the ending was amazing. Really great song.
The Devin Townsend Band - Deadhead - You described the feel of this song quite well in your message - it's really epic. The guitars are so big and create this wall of noise. Not sure where exactly I'd rank it with the other Devin songs of the roulette, but it'd be up there.
Grade: 8.5

Sacul: Anathema - Fragile Dreams - I don't believe I ever checked out one of Anathema's slower songs, so this came as surprise. I really liked the stings in the intro, and I liked the vocals more than I remembered. Overall it was much better than expected, so I was pretty impressed.
Savior Machine - Carnival of Souls - This one was pretty hit and miss. There were a lot of good sections, but I didn't particularly enjoy the intro or the vocals.
Grade: 7.5

Jingle.boy: Motley Crue - Kickstart my Heart - I've never been big on Motley Crue, and I may have heard this one before, but I wasn't sure so I let it go. Overall it was better than most the stuff they play on the radio, but still not really my thing.
It Bites - The Tall Ships - My god this song was good. The chorus was, as Portnoy would put it, "majestic". It was actually a pretty poppy song, but it was done perfectly in a way most pop songs aren't. Loved it.
Grade: 8.5

Lucien: Anton Bruckner - Symphony 9, Movement 2 - The music class I'm currently taking has definitely given me a better appreciation of classical music (or Romantic if we're being specific). Still, I've never quite been blown away by a piece like I have in the Rock scene. This was another example of such. It had some really creative and cool things, but it was hard for me to connect on an emotional level, which has nothing to do with the music itself, but the listener.
Antonin Dvorak - Symphony 8, Movement 1 - Dvorak's name has definitely come up in this class. This one had a bit more of an epic feel, and the major key sounded more pleasing to the ear than the other one. Pretty enjoyable song.
Grade: 7

Big Hath: Shadow Gallery - Cliffhanger 2 - I'd heard some Shadow Gallery before and wasn't all that impressed, so I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this song. I was pleasantly surprised by the beginning. Very nice feel. The vocalist was just average for me. The instrumental section had some nice moments, but also some unneeded wankery. Better song than I expected, but still not that great.
Big Big Train - The First Rebreather - This song really reminded me of Trick of the Tail era Genesis (along with some Gabriel-esque flute). The song Ripples especially comes to mind during the chorus. Anyway this song was really great with no wasted space, and all the pieces fit together very nicely.
Grade: 8

Mikemangioy: Devin Townsend - Grace - Like Deadhead, this one would be pretty close to the top of the Devin songs I got this roulette. Super epic and intense, with some nice vocals. The stage performance was awesome too.
Haken - Darkest Light - I pretty much had the same reaction to this as the other Haken songs I've checked out in the past. There's a lot of cool things, but as a whole it just didn't do much for me. Not a bad song by any means, but kindof just "meh"
Grade: 7.5

Adace: Scar Symmetry - Cryonic Harvest[\b] - This song was insanely energetic. The switching between harsh and clean vocals was very well done, and the instrumentation was excellent. Very fun to listen to. Wtf was that ending, though?
Nightwish - I Want My Tears Back - This song was really interesting with whatever that strange instrument was. And for the most part it was a very catchy and fun song. This might've been the hardest one to choose a favorite of the two, but the SS song just edges it out.
Grade: 8

Tyrias: Biffy Clyro - Spanish Radio - This was a very interesting blend of genres, and I must say it was very good. Very uplifting tone, and the trumpets added some cool flavor. This was another where it was hard to choose the winner, but I think this one takes the cake.
Kamelot - Momento Mori - This was another great prog tune. Really liked a lot of the drum beats and the verses. There were a few times where it sounded a little generic, but a great song overall.
Grade: 7.5

Lonestar: Shineback   - Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed - See the description for the Kamelot song. Pretty much my exact feelings. Good tune.
Karnya - Where the Silence Remains - I wasn't as big on this one, and I think it was the vocals that weren't my favorite. I really liked the beginning, but the rest was just average, and some of the transitions felt sloppy.
Grade: 7.5

Elite: Mr. Bungle - Ars Moriendi - This song was... weird. Like really really weird. So many changes that it was hard to keep track. It was actually pretty fun to listen to, but not really my thing.
Ben Folds Five - Song For the Dumped - This one was mostly average for me, but certainly more accessible and easy to listen to than the other one. Not bad, but I definitely liked the other song you sent by him more.
Grade: 6.5
