How many ears do you fucking guys have? I only have 2 and would never give Joel Hoekstra the time of day. I don't even know who the fuck he is! I hear he's in Whitesnake. Big F'n deal.

Seriously, I read posts here and I think I have it pretty good, but I just don't have the time and wherewithal. Every now and then I think, "WTF are these people talking about?". This was one of those times! :lol

It only takes an hour to check out an album.  If we like it, it sticks, if not we move on.  But come on Tim, you should be able to keep up.  :lol

I know..............the TAC roulette was all a big excuse to hear some Winger and pretend like you didn't want some of this action

If it counts for anything the vocals on the Hoekstra album are shared by Soto and Russ Allen.

I do sorta know what you mean though..................sometimes I waste my time trawling through all sorts of rubbish when I could be listening to the classics and not have to worry.  But occasionally I have a week like this one and it's worth it all of a sudden.

Yeah, that's why he can't keep up, as it's Winger 24/7 for Timmy.

I understand this too, and it's proven time and time again but the amount of classics I have that I really haven't delved into properly.  But I just can't seem to let new stuff pass me by too much.  The thought of missing out on a gem doesn't sit well with me.

It's funny. I was about to set up my computer and speakers in the kitchen while making dinner tonight to check out the C2C. But I just didn't have the energy. :lol

I DID do that with Golgotha last week and was pleasantly surprised.

Should I just bite the bullet and get a cheap mp3 version of Golgotha, or stay true to my morals and just order the thing?  I'm such a procrastinator.

Always a dilemma. I currently don't download stuff. Not because of morals, but mainly because of the untrustworthy sources. I have in the past, but I think I'm good with it. All I need is to have some child pornography attached and I'd be fucked.

Golgotha is going to be a test. Did I like it enough to buy it with my Christmas Amazon Cards or let it go altogether? I can always pull it up on Youtube if I need to.

How do you listen to your stuff first?

I use a pretty legit site that charges like 12c a track.  It seems okay and has been good for a while now.

If I want to sample something, I'll do it on youtube. My method of finding new bands is to check the reviews on Bravewords or Metal Reviews. If I read something interesting, I'll check it on Youtube. If I like the vocals and the music is decent, I will do a buy.

But I do have a budget.

I have pretty much made the switch - aside from the issue of storage for many thousands of CDs  , having my whole collection at my fingertips and not having to find a disc is pretty cool.  I finally got around to ripping the vast majority of my discs a year or two ago.  Maybe my hearing is going but the sound difference is minor and in some cases it seems like modern albums are mastered with mp3 in mind and they can actually sound better.

I generally only buy a disc now if it's an all time favourite artist or if I feel it will benefit an up and coming artist (via direct purchase).

Having said all that there is a drop in the amount of connection I feel with a lot of the music these days vs the experience of travel , buying CDs from the store etc...... but all my old haunts are closed anyway .  On the whole going digital for the vast majority of my new purchases makes sense to me .

Pretty much the same Brent, although I like to get the cd's of my fav bands like you say, which is a lot.  Money becomes a factor as we get older, so I'm more picky with what I'll actually purchase on cd, but the amount of releases these days, it's quite a lot.

I rip all my cd's anyway when I buy them so it seems counter productive, but for some reason, I don't really care.  And yeah, the difference in quality is minimal and next to none IMO.

Yeah, I know, I feel dirty doing it, but anything that sticks, I will purchase for sure.  Most of the time, I'll buy it there, download, keep it in a separate folder and normally never listen to it again.  The only two lately I've done this with that have stuck were the new Serpentine and Borealis, but they are so fucking expensive to get a copy of, that I just can't bring myself to spend the amount of money they cost.

Probably 2/3 of my purchases are Amazon downloads.

And yeah, money is an issue. You can buy more music buying the download.
While I CAN buy anything I want, it's really my family's money, so I am sensitive.

I've definitely condensed the amount of cd's I purchase as compared to a few years back.  Like Brent, I will buy my favorite artists and now only pick and choose anything else.  Believe me, its much better then it used to be lol

Besides a dozen or so songs on napster in the late 90's, I've never downloaded a song

I'm old school, I still want the physical copy and that will never change, guaranteed.

Do you think we are a rare in fact a rare breed these days with the purchasing of music?  Or possibly might have something to do with our age.  Guys in their late teens and early twenties might not be able to afford the amount of music we get through.

When I visit the cd stores I go to, I see the same metal cd's sitting there for such a long time.  I can usually tell if anything and what has been purchased from the shelves weeks apart.  :lol

I think it's refreshing to see a group like us so committed to our bands and buying the music.

Spotify gents... use the free version if you have to.  I think you get 10 hours per month, ad supported.  Personally, it's worth the $12 CAD per month for premium.  It's saved me from having to "download" stuff just to sample, and I feel kinda good that even fractions of pennies are going to the artists.  If it's good enough, and certain bands I always contribute to... then I'll buy the CD.  And when I go to shows, I always buy merch, and the discs straight from the band.

I'd say my purchases are 60/40 digital/physical.  I've got a lock on a couple of Russian paid sites that I use only as a method of last resort - when shit isn't on Spotify, Amazon  iTunes, or Bandcamp.  At the moment, Conception is falling into that category.  Seeing as how they've been disbanded for years, I don't feel overly bad about lifting them (if I decide to do so).

I guarantee we are a rare breed.

I actually overheard a conversation at work a couple of days ago where someone mentioned that he witnessed someone actually buy a cd at walmart.  He said he gave the person a weird look.

I just kind of smirked lol

That does sound quite good Chad, I might have to look into it.  Would be a lot more than that a month for me with this exchange rate at the moment.

I have this mentality also.  Inactive bands I don't feel so guilty about, as the record company would probably get all the money anyway.

That's quite sad and ignorant and proves the argument of a lot of the artists across the world at the moment when it comes to music sales.

I think Spotify prices things locally.  It's actually only $9.99/mo CAD + tax.  PM Bolsters to see what the AU price is, he uses it - that's how he's been sending me his Roulette submissions.  I assume he is using one of the paid levels.

I only use the free version, and it's been fine. just the very occasional 15 second ad. If you intend to use it as your primary mode of listening to music it might be limiting, but for browsing music and checking out some new albums, I find the free version to be more than enough.

There's no limit to how much music you can listen to on Spotify free. The only drawbacks are the ads which play after every few songs, the quality which is 160kbps - but it's Ogg Vorbis so it's better than 160kbps MP3, and no keeping files for offline listening. Premium removes the ads, bumps the quality up to 320kbps OGG, and allows up to 9,999 songs to be stored on up to three devices (no more than 3,333 per device however) for offline listening.

PM Bolsters to see what the AU price is, he uses it - that's how he's been sending me his Roulette submissions.  I assume he is using one of the paid levels.
Nope, I'm a cheapass. :lol I've been thinking about subscribing lately though. Premium is $11.99 per month for us if you're curious, Kade.

Cool as man.  I'd probably just sign up free if there's no limit.  As I said, anything solid I'll buy on cd anyway.  Sounds too good to be true to be honest.  I guess that's why artists are blowing up.

An artist can expect to get between 0.6 to 0.84 cents per song streamed in royalties. :lol So if you want to support the artists Spotify is a terrible way to do so.
