Arch/Matheos:  Not sure if many of you guys are into the Arch stuff, but jeez this sounds good.  Wonderful crystal clear production and mixing.  Jim's coming up with some great riffs lately and it shows again here.  The first album was hard to get the head around as Arch is a strange one and this one is more of the same but it does have a few more melodies that are a bit more catchy than what I found on the first one.  Jim does some wonderful leads on here too, his tone is amazing.  Frank shreds on the last two songs too which is a great contrast.  Will listen again.

As I said pretty much everywhere on DTF, this album is the shit. It's actually curious, I liked it so much I searched for some interviews and I found one with John where he says Jim recorded all the leads as demos and planned to have guest guitarists to actually play them and John said "no, no, Jim, I think your leads are amazing, let's keep them on the album" and Jim agreed. And on the other hand, John sang his lines a bit safer for the demos and when they meet up next time and John would add some crazy stuff to the vocals Jim would say "hey, no, John, how about we keep the previous vocal line, I liked it a lot" and so John restrained himself a bit on the album. I'd say both of those things really show throughout the record and possibly are the reason this album is my favourite of the year by far right now.

I think I'm around 30 or 35 spins into Winter Ethereal right now and I still love it. It's been a while since I've been obsessed with an album like that.

Also kinda curious about Tolkki right now I guess. Wasn't going to bother with it, may check it out now I guess.

Yeah, both those things stood out to me instantly and definitely kept my attention.  The sound quality also is sublime.  It's so good to see Frank still involved too.  He's always had some skills, quite underrated.  That riff in Wrath of the Universe is enormous.

Schwing.  That was a terrific way to start the morning.  If the rest of the album is this good, could very well be an instant contender for AOTY.

That was undeniably VP but a really excellent song to be honest.

I love how pumped the bass player is while playing the tune.

I stumbled upon this fantastic YouTube Channel called FresnoMediaRestoration

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPVLqHbydz734aFOZBjAs5Q

It has amazing footage of shows from the mid 70's to early 80's from the Fresno area. There are a ton of audio boots, but some fantastic footage. He just released earlier this week some great video of AC/DC from 1979.

Uriah Heep is playing in my town next month and I'd be interested in going. I'm not familiar with their material outside of Easy Living (a killer tune), so any album/song recommendations would be appreciated.

Well, probably their all time classic is Demons and Wizards (that Easy Livin comes from) so there's that. Magician's Birthday is very similar.

And among the hard rock heads Abominog (in my experience) seems to be the most popular.   They actually did a pub tour out here not so long ago but I didn't manage to catch them.  They're pretty low profile out here so was surprised to see them touring.

Ruba, their last half dozen albums are excellent. They feature Bernie Shaw on vocals. They are all quite solid rock to hard rock. Cool Hammond organ sound throughout most of it.

Here is a link to their 2018 album Living The Dream.

Now, myself and Tim seem to be pretty in sync with each other for quite some time now, but unfortunately we finally have a bit of a divide.  I checked out the new Hammerfall.  I wrote this band off as per my comments a page or two back.  What they have producing has been underwhelming and their last one was the end for me.

This new one, surprisingly, I think is actually pretty damn good.  I still don't like the Sweden song and there isn't a lot of depth here, but all in all I think it's a pretty good slab of metal.  There are some good songs here and some cool things going on.  Jociam sounds great and the production sounds good too.  There was a couple of cool cheesy heavier songs like Testify I think and Dead By Dawn.  So yeah, I wanted to hate this, but I don't.  Some of the stuff here reminds me of their earlier stuff.

I am so far behind on checking out new releases it's not funny but I have seen some positive reviews , so was wondering if anyone around here would agree.

Finally getting around to Arch/Matheos and , aside from being a bit indifferent towards his voice (like Lizzy Borden with less melodic sense) , I am really having to go searching for a hook to get me on board.   A lot of the lyrics seem to be just "there" and barely related to the music.   I know it's had almost universal praise too.

Only a few tracks in but feeling like the Skip button is gonna get a workout :)

If you cut a few songs out it's actually a really good album.  Here's my abbreviated version:

I’ve been well out of the loop on new releases this year. I just haven’t got the drive to seek out the good stuff from the solid.

I checked the Defiants album, which was ok.

The new Sinner album is pretty good, but suffers from too many singers and a couple of less inspired tracks.
